Since yesterdays KotH event was scheduled at a bad time for

NA players, I decided to host a duel cup as a compensation for it. So here we have the very first duel tournament for Reflex!

UPDATE

As I already stated in one of the comments below this post, unfortunately I will have to slightly change the mappool as some of the maps are not suited for use in a competition. The maps that will be removed from the mappool are:

- FjoRXtourney1: It causes server and client crashes.
- neon: It is not suited for 1on1 gameplay, as it is very open and not very balanced as a whole.

These two maps will be replaced by:

- highrise-a3
- thcdm1-velocity

xero fixed the clipping issues on xdm1 so that one will stay in the pool. I am sorry for having to change the mappool this late into the sign-up phase but I believe that it is better to change the mappool than playing on unbalanced or even not working maps.

Explained on IRC, it's just there as a visual hint for readers who only skim through the frontpage and notice a shiny red flag along with the reflex logo so it is easier to say which side of the pond is involved :)

That sucks mate. I would love to host it on Sunday but the problem is, when it's late afternoon or evening for you guys over there it's late night for me here in Germany and I have university on Mondays so I can't stay up until 3 or 4 am.

Thank you Kyper. I will ask for the other map maker's to put them all together in a mappack so people can download them faster and easier (they all probably will be included with one of the next reflex builds anyway).

Just a heads up: You don't actually need a map locally -- the server just sends it to you as part of connecting. You won't have lightmaps unless you build them yourself, but it works.

What? Start is 16:00 EST and from a rough estimate end will be somewhere around 22:30 EST. So 22:00 CET start and 4:30 CET end.

i think those tournaments might show to the devs every single aspect of this game in a new light. it will be the best players playing so a lot of bugs, changes and stuff will be exploited in this replays. i'm sure it will help to shape this game even better for it's future competitive style.

also as long as there is no prize pool and it's only for fun then i don't see a problem with those cups this early at all

That's not going to be fixed soon. You must understand that what we are playing right now is what under normal circumstances never leaves the developer's office PCs. It's like you would play Quake III Arena two years prior to it's release. Games in this stage of development normally are only meant to be running on the dev's work-stations that have several times more juice than any normal gaming rig.

However newborn already mentioned that they will do some temporary hotfixes like removing most of the non-dev textures (since atm. all textures are loaded into vram directly causing unnecessary load on the gpu) in order to make the game run a bit more smooth on lower end PCs.

Real optimization will come once the game is near to hitting beta-stage I think.

my initial impressions after running around the maps a little:

bdm3 is an official map, circular design, nice visuals, rather small, i'm looking forward to see how this plays

fjorxtourney1 has amazing detail in some parts (those rails across the hallway ceiling, omg!) whilst being pretty basic in others, lighting is unfinished (really dark in some places): play this without building the lightmap! it seems to be great for gameplay

i'm quite stoked about xdm1: it's very beautiful and looks really interesting, maybe a bit too "open" for good gameplay, we'll have to see

while neon is quite the looker (its visuals are fantastic), the map doesn't seem suitable for 1v1 whatsoever (huuuuge distances you can snipe across)

wtf_tourney1_b1 looks to be a very fun map to play, rather uniform "ice world" theme/lighting which is not really my cup of tea but new versions may improve in this regard

I probably will replace a couple of maps namely neon, fjorx and xdm1. Reasons:

neon: pretty much what you have said.
fjorx: crashes the game or server for some people
xdm1: you can walk out of the map at a couple of places.
