Genre isn't dead but it's not doing well. So many of these games are literally being made by 1-man development "teams".

Game Dev Tycoon and GamersGoMakers are good but they're almost the same game.

Wildlife Park 3 is apparently good, if you want to manage a zoo.

If you ever played Detroit keep an eye on GearCity, it might be quality but still early access.

I still play the older games occasionally because nobody has genuinely improved on them. Theme Hospital, Dungeon Keeper etc. Someone is actually making a new game that may as well be called Dungeon Keeper, I'll try and find the name of it, was early access last I checked. edit: Just found it, "War for the Overworld".

Ports of call is a good trade/ship simulation game I used to play on amiga a long time ago, they've updated it for PC and I still play it some times. You transport goods by boat and buy better boats as well as manage your fleet etc. I'm not interested in the ship simulation part but it's optional, I play the economic simulator PoC XXL without ship simulation.

It's not typical 'tycoon' style or simcity style but it's about producing a lot of shit to produce even more shit. It's pretty fun, I recommend the demo for sure.

Game Dev tycoon didn't seem to have much depth when I got it on steam sale ages ago, it kind of reminded me of a flash game where you find one successful thing and just keep doing that, rotating with other successful things based on market trend/not repeating yourself too often.

Train Fever looks ok, still in beta I think though...so I'm not that keen on grabbing it at the moment since a bunch of early access on steam at the moment is fucking horrid. (Stomping Land being the biggest example, but things like The Forest also up there).
I think it's better to wait until you see the game being constantly updated or until it's nearly ready for actual release.

Prison Architect is pretty good, I enjoyed that for awhile. Plus it's been getting regular updates for a long time and I never had any issues with bugs or crashes when I was playing it.

Yeah it might be final release. I think the article I read on it said it was still in beta (though was a bit ago) and I couldn't tell too much from the trailer.

Prison Architect is worth it, especially if you can grab it on sale. You might be able to wait and get in over the Steam Christmas sale. (When I usually grab a bunch of crap and slowly go through it).

Prison architect is fun but once you have your prison running, theres not really anything to do, except make a new prison or extend the one you have. Once you have a large prison that runs well, the game is pretty much out of steam, since theres not a great deal of things you can do differently, gameplay and design wise (or aesthetically). But yeah it is worth it for the fun of making the first few prisons.

Tried Train Fever from torrent and for me it looks like alpha.beta, quite empty. Building tools are annoying.

I didn't played a lot this series but I checked what people said about Caesar IV, already. Most of them said smth like this: "This is not Caesar anymore", "version for kids etc". So I guess its shit compared to Caesar III.

Caesar III widescreen - 1680x1050 looks great.

It might sound egotistical of me, but I consider my self an expert in the field
of tycoon games. I own most of the games listed and many more that are not
listed. (Old Timer, MotorCity, Air Bucks, AeroBiz?! There is a lot more you
could add!!! :P )

So the OP question is: "Is this genre is dead?" My answer is, "It depends on
which sub-genre you're talking about."

To understand what I mean you have to look at the history of business games.

In the 80s most business sims were practially spread sheet games. No real depth
other than making choices basic and seeing what money comes from it. Games like
Oil Barron and various stock market
simulators were popular such as Wall Street Kid and Wall Street


These games were not wildly popular, but they were not hard to make. They found
profitability in their niche which attracted more developers and more games.
Eventually we ended up in what I call the golden age of management games, the
early 90s.

In the early 90s text based business sims met graphics. There was still focus on
depth, numbers, and realistic simulation. A lot of great games came out of this
period, I consider most of these games "Management" Games and not tycoons. Games
included, Detroit, Motor City, Air
Bucks, Capitalism, and many more.

With graphics came expanded budgets, expanded budgets means you need more sales,
and very few of these games sold well. The main reason being the games were
complex. They required you to think, they required you to know math, they
required you to use logic, and have patience. Not kid friendly.

And then in the mid 90s the tycoon fad came. The early 90s had tycoon games (Rail
Road tycoon, Sim City) but they really didn't catch on in force till the late
90s when casual games likes Roller Coaster Tycoon, Rail Road Tycoon 2, Theme Park Tycoon, Zoo
Tycoon, Yoot Tower etc. These games were wildly popular, and sold HUGE
quantities. Over night Management simulators died, and everyone started making
Tycoon games.

Of course, with everyone making tycoon games, the quality started to decrease
(Car Tycoon anyone?) and as a result by early 2000s, the entire market was dead.

However as other games genres increased in artwork requirements (thus development money)
people started making tycoon games again. The lack of competition means quality can shine.
And as such tycoon games have started to gain back into popularity (GameDev
Tycoon.) Casual game play means anyone can pick it up, cartoony graphics means
it's friendly to most people, and lite numbers make it simple for the mind. But
eventually there will be too many tycoon games, and the market will collapse on
it self.

As someone who makes a Management game, the management market is fairly, well,
dead. While there is still money to be made in it, it is a much smaller niche than tycoon games.
Luckily not many games fill that niche. But it is growing, and the early 90s
will repeat it self. But I also suspect the same thing will happen to tycoon games.






To sum it up, TLDR:
No, you're at the rebirth years of Tycoon Games, they'll peak in 5-10 years, then die again. Managment Sims you'll
have to look for the niche where it hides. It will never become as popular as it was in the early 1990s but a few companies (like me) will fill that niche.

I've been playing Locomotion lately, I think its a better base game than TTD, and it would be perfect if it had the same improvements to it that were given to openTTD.

Fucking Darkest Dungeon, the best "new" game I've played in years.
Its an rng dungeon crawler, but feels more like a manager game. The get-and-spend mechanics is heavily present at all times as you upgrade your town, heroes etc.

The best part is - it reminds me of Quake. Once youve larned the game you will realise every step in DD is about making a decision. And behind the simple interface lies an incredibly complex and deep gameplay, including that well-known phase of frustration that I believe most of you will be able to get through.
Oh and it also has a Xian-level narrator and great soundtrack.
Give it a try.

Yeah it's an awesome game, has that "one-more-turn" addiction as well, or in this case, keeping you hooked for one more dungeon and before you know it hours have disappeared.

Rofl. One of the heroes got killed during a boss fight and it was too much for the poor guy to take (deaths are permanent in DD).

But yeah, this game brings out emotions in people. I've seen LP videos where ever-optimistic guys crumble into complete despair after a bad run, or these I'm-afraid-to-speak-up nerds yelling in deep voice like madmen when things go right.

But he seems so surprised... I guess I'd need to play to understand.

Edit: Nevermind roflmao. It was a total party wipe with boss surviving at basically no hp.
