It seems like the UI freeze when clicking on the name of people having that Online / Offline problem. Clicking back on someone else name solve the problem.

Looks like a better layout than what currently exists. The pop-out balloon with match-information is really annoying on low-resolution screens, because the pop-out balloon appears outside the screen sometimes :o

ye, 1280x1024 i wouldn't consider low-res at all. Hover menus has always been a big pain in the neck on a web interface imo.

Unlike right now, Quake-LIVE that is, game is so boring, i swear its so boring, they removed everything fun in the Quake series and made it free for everyone, kinda, from a blood-gore game to a fighting robots game, the enemy is a robot, when he gets hit you hear a robot sound, when he dies the skin becomes black and " explodes " yes explodes, no Gibs no anything, have you ever shot a rail at an enemy and you see it passing throught him and blood spilling ? you have no idea how satifying that is and how much you enjoy " fragging " people and therefore enjoy playing the game and become addicted to it, its same of what happened with Doom, game is 3D but was super addictive due to its atmosphere and monsters and blood !!!

now Quake is just a robot fighting game and it is fully systematic, spawns now are " calculated " just to make it more easy for the enemy while in fact it makes it more easy to get a spawn frag more than the good old random spawns where the enemy can spawn next to you or at the furthest possible point, no one gets this point, neither ID or the players that didnt play QW/Q2, and now even the damage that you take is systematic, i remember in the Q2 days, i fall from a higher place and all my armor and health gets screwed and i remain with 10 health, now you fall from the highest possible point and you only get 40 damage or smth, im sure people will get what i mean, and when you spawn you get a spawn protection so you wont get killed easily, weapons do less damage than before and the game is actually full of cheaters ! Quake is now is so boring, so boring and so easy, everyone can be good at it, you no longer need to be "unique " in your own way, you jsut have to practice and you will become good after few months, ofc if you dont get bored after a while, in this game ping matters so much, a good pc matters so much, knowing the good players matter so much since if you ask anyone for help in IRC or smth, no one is gonna answer you unless you are " known " i remember i wanted to play QW at some point and i just went to their small channel and said " hi, can anyone help me here ? im trying to make my game work " i sweat they passed 3 hours with me tweaking my game and customizing it and actually teaching me some basics about the game, i got so hyped that i even participated in a tournament and was so freaking happy of the community and the game, while in QL i posted about an FPS problem so many times in IRC channels, the best answer that i got is " have you tried turning it OFF and ON mate ? " even the people playing QL are bored

QL is not Quake, lets be honest, its not the real Quake that we grow up with, you dont have fun playing the game anymore unless you are playing a TDM game which is fun cause of the friends that you are playing with and not the actual game, biggest proof is the "pro" players, they dont play public games, they rarely do it, they just play official games or one or two games to warm up and win the tournament and leave, they dont really enjoy the game, if tournaments stops they wont be playing this game anymore, i garantee it, its like when shootmania started, everyone played it cause of the prizes and sponsors that there is, they played, got the money and quit cause the game is pure shit, its kinda the same happening with QL, if there are no more tournaments, you wont see the "pro" players play cause its pointless, the game is not fun to play, its not addictive, the only thing that encourages people in playing right now is either money or the fun that you get while hanging out with people and not the actual game.

It's also a question of how comfortable it is to look at. Black text on a purely white background is very stressing on the eyes, it makes me want to look away from it. The current browser is better looking, since there's actually no pure white. im not saying that is should not be white, im just saying that it should be related to the Quake theme, just to make the game original and the menu more " nice " and not just easy to use, sometimes even the looking of a menu makes you want to open QL and play it, making the menu gothic or dark or black will make any player think that he is actually playing a Quake game and not a regular Fast FPS game.

They changed the tone of the game and you don't have to even play the game to see it. Just look at the logos. I included the QuakeCon logo because I feel like if someone proposed this design 5 years ago, id would no, this doesn't feel like Quake at all.

To be honest...you are right actually, lol.

Quake1 and Quake3 had an artistic style, way different than games of their time. Quake1 in particular even had a plot and enemies made in accordance to it.

On the other hand, for QL id software decided to practically re-release Q3 as is, then decided to remove some aspects due to ESRB ratings and some others for no reason. The consequences were that:

1. The game lost a big part of its artistic style, that objectively made it look great. Watch a default config Q3 duel on dm13 (nodm9 :P, including hud, lg style and everything else) then watch the same map in QL, or eviscerated. The removal of gibs and blood is just only a part of that, though a meaningful one I agree.
2. When removing those aspects they didn't add anything to replace them, so in the end they left a big hole. They could have replaced those and hopefully the overall look of the game, but instead they chose to remove and not to add anything. That's why the game looks so dull, compared to q3 and to other games. For a close example, Defrag doesn't have blood but it does have a style.
3. The things added to QL were mostly new maps, the interface remaking features coming from cpma, but I don't think they were added having a new consistent style or using Q3's style. The current hitbeep sounds are weird to hear in Q3/QL, maps are out of place unless some specific exceptions (Reflux fits), the interface is entirely different than what the game looks like (the old/current and the new one), etc.
4. Finally, they don't cash in on nostalgia as much as they should. If I were in charge I'd have charged as DLC having the Q3, Q2, Q1, dreamcast and ports, etc. looks :P

And about if QL is a part of the quake franchise or not, I'd say the only games that truly are are Q1 and Q3. Reason is that Q4 is a rehash of Q2's sp and Q3's mp, plus made by another company, then QL is a lazy copypasting job of Q3. Finally, even though I'm a Q2 guy I still have to say that Q2 is a totally different game and franchise than Q1 and Q3, to the point it was not going to be called "quake", but was due to marketing reasons.
If you want the 'edgy' opinion, Q1 is pretty much the only proper and complete quake of the whole series, as Q3 was a quite simple multiplayer-only game, hence why so many people for decades (in sites that matter) have been saying id should stop trying to milk Q3 and Q2, like they have for all these years, but instead try to milk Q1, either by making a sequel or by making a franchise re-release ("Quake").
edit: And even edgier though probably right, they should bring Romero back for that project. He understands what made quake and doom what they were. Carmack did not, actually.

It's pretty safe to assume that id will break QLHM compatibility or that the userscripts are gonna become outdated. The redesign update is a good opportunity to implement these things into the default client. The browser in its current form or the one of this concept is pretty much unusable with out them.

QLRanks uses some proprietary algorithms and they're probably allowed to do it only because they don't generate any revenue from it. A business using that as third party would probably get itself in trouble (or get QLRanks in trouble).

QLRanks, matchmaking, global chat, etc. should be an official part of the game and be included in the interface. Until that, among many other changes, a site redesign will at best be more eye catching than what it currently is, but still without substance.

From a design point of view -of which I know nothing of-, I think this looks too much like a website. QL is a standalone executable now, so the menu should be styled like a videogame menu and it's high time to deal with the browser-based leftovers, plus the website style usually gives the impression that the game is not going to be remarkable, or that is a placeholder until the definitive menu is released.

In short, I think they should consider how the new to the game players experience will be. Someone that enters the game from steam will find this interface to be really weird, due to the said browserception, that it doesn't look like a videogame and that its features are way lesser in quantity and quality when compared to other games. The current and the new browser give new players the sensation of that the game is not going to be good nor currently developed, that until they join a match and find they were right from start :P

Okay. Someone help me understand this. There is a standalone client. The standalone client launches the web browser design that appeared on the Quake Live site. The Quake Live site cannot be used to join games anymore, only view account profile information.

Having a browser component to render pages means they can use the same stats pages etc both in the game, and on the website for anyone to access.

Not launching the game from a browser means they never have to worry about web browser compatibility issues, plugins etc.

The in game UI code for Quake3 would need a major, MAJOR overhaul to be able to do a quarter decent server browser, let alone the start a match stuff, it's pointless to do.

How compatible is the launcher with Mac and Linux? They don't worry about anything because they simply don't care. You're right it's pointless to improve Quake Live at all.

There are far more important things to work on to improve QL.

Why would they worry about work on launcher compatibility when the game itself doesn't have Mac/Linux builds? and if there were builds for them they could produce a simple launcher specific for them, or work on dropping the launcher entirely.

I think it's because it would require registering a protocol handler which would need passing UAC on most systems these days.

need some flat design.

They're all spaced out just to have some tiny, dark, high fov map thumbnails that you can't even identify the map with. The host's name is also in the biggest font when no one gives a shit who hosts it.

It looks like they STILL haven't changed the default filter settings to have full servers seen so it looks like the game is completely dead to everyone that first starts playing the game. How has that not been fixed yet? I've had so many people new to the game tell me they couldn't find a server and it looked like it was completely dead, so i logged on and saw there was a ton of full ones.

Maybe he just took that shot when there actually wasn't a full server in that region, or he's just using a different filter setting...

Wouldn't it be easier for id to allow for client customization, or different themes at the very least?

It's no rocket science and some people might want to have the colors/layout different.
I'd say make a client layout/options suggestions thread on QL forums if it doesn't exist already.

Displaying servers as a list is a bad idea. It was much better and faster to get to know the server before you joined it by simply having the cursor over the icon.

Maps thumbnails are waaayyy tooo small. It takes longer to get to know which map is being played.

Why all the menus don't show up when the mouse is over it? It makes it slower to have to click on it and then click again.

You've got a long list of matches (with names now... can't even filter by server host name) on which you have to click in order to see the map (thumbnail too small) and see if it's one that pleases you.

I can't understand why I need to click on everything.

Can we have the previous server browser design i mean the interactive small boxes as preview of games nad not a list?

List is hard on the eyes, cant see fast the game types etc :/

Only downside of the previous design was the stupid 3x3 box display mac but now i see there is more space so...

Ok, so they deployed this stuff a couple of days ago. I logged on today and was happy to see the "Play now" button that throws me onto a server immediately. However, it's not good enough as i also ended up as a spectator on a server watching a match that was only half finished.

Why can't they make it a proper matchmaking button where players are paired onto a server and the match starts automatically with a 10 second countdown? This would open up for actual GRINDING of the ladder, lots of games played. :(

Edit: also there's something wrong when i leave a match sometimes, the whole site bugs up until i go to like windowed mode and back. Never happened before.

What they don't get with this cod-like changes is that they work in cod because the game is entirely built around them.

Loadouts work because there aren't items. The auto matchmaking works because of the lobby system, party system, then it mixes servers, skill matchmaking is quite good and finally max players is like 20, not 10. For example in the usual case of only 3 players in a ca server, in cod what happens is that those 3 are assigned into another more populated server after the match ends, then when you press the play now button what happens is that you get into a pre-game lobby and if there's too few players (lets say 5) they are all assigned into an about to start lobby with more players or into a half game match (to that 3 players' match), you'll never play against evil or with 150 ping, and so on.

In the end the play now button in QL is just a half assed attempt, like the whole QL project is. No matter the small fixes that might be done the core issues will always be present, unless a really major change. Problem is those will never happen, because of the usual "Q3 engine excuse" (hint: black ops 2 uses the q3 engine).

Black Ops 2 uses 15 years and millions of dollars of improvements to id tech 3 so I think the comparison may be a *little* unfair.

QL doesn't use the exact same Q3 engine as well.

The point is all those things are doable.

I found a MAJOR BUG :

when you have a lot of servers in the list and you want to see match details of a server that is down the page you have to scroll all the way up to see it... old style was better, maybe add something so that when we click a server match detail right box is at same height or something like this... i realy dont like the new update so far.

I dont mind about the cosmetic update of the menues etc, might be better even? But server browser is a headash. Gme types are not clear when you see it now as a list and the map detail is not clear you now have to click the server to see details etc :/ could be so much better... First highlight game type , then numbers of players / specs and then in font put big image of the currecnt played map... and then in detail if you click you could see players/specs names/scores and so on. Also the server name is totaly missleading and way too big compared to the gametype name etc. Server name should always start with gametype abreviation and the a custom name if server owner set one...

Just tried the new site for the first time. Are they even bothering to test stuff out anymore? All of the skillmatched servers I tried joining I get this message; "this match is for premium users only." or something to that effect. Yet, there's no premium icon or anything indicating a prem only match. Why can't you see if someone is standard/prem/pro? Used to show that on people's profile. Why do I have to click play, then fuck with that little menu. And there's more, but come on. Bunch of little shit that adds up to one big annoyance.

The server browser is fucking broken.
