I've written off arena FPS for the past year, except for this game. I'm convinced reborn will be dead, that Doom4 will be a 60fps POS game, and that QL 2.0 will do nothing to KEEP quake

the basic gamemodes (FFA, Duel, TDM, CTF, DOM, instagib, etc) could be put in to the game first. other modes like Assault (or Warfare, whatever its gonna be) and Bombing Run could probably get months later after the game is released if predictions right.

yeah, and worst case scenario someone can make a new gameplay since they'll likely require 'fixing'

Jump boots/dodging and dodge jumping add some pretty dynamic elements to the melee.

you can play UT'99 like a quake player, but mastering dodging is more complex, if you watch old vids from gitzzz, killu, lauke & burnie can play like this.

This is the biggest 'arena' game news since Quake4, released in 2005.

Furthermore, with all those promises I hope the new UT becomes the 1v1 'arena' main game of choice in mainstream esports instead of Q3/QL, or whichever the id software offering is. What better than this to finally replace Q3.

To do a comparison, from the news post it seems that, unlike QL, it will attract newcomers for years to come and keep them playing, that the game won't be a copypaste (compare Q3 to QL then CS1.6 to CS:GO; the later is not one), will be made by a company that isn't on its last legs, all the original developers haven't left the company, the project idea won't be overly complicated, it will have actual support (instead of 1 to 2 developers without community content support), it won't be some meaningless experiment but instead the game will be used to advertise the new engine (that will probably sell and be used by big titles unlike anything from id this century), and the game already is getting advertised.

This is finally it, all the things we ever wanted in a 'competitive game', after 10 years of the last big thing here. It truly doesn't matter that it is from another company, or that isn't a quake clone.

I have serious doubts about how competitive it will be made, getting stuff done by the community is good but the most of the "community" like to fly around in floating tanks.

Hopefully the base of the game will be created or at least checked by epic. Then I guess it will be up to users to sift through some of the dogshit mods/maps/ideas to find out what's best for our needs/tournaments.

My fear is that the game will be split into a hundred tiny communities (iCTF, TDM, DOM, BR, ONS + all the rubbish game types all the nerds will come up with, like "redeemer jump room low-grav arena" etc etc)

These 'sub-communities' will be so small that they will be unable to sustain themselves... then everyone dies.

There needs to be some kind of uniformity in order to get a large enough community. This leadership needs to come from Epic. You can't just let the 'community' sort out everything.

Also, we need to get this on Steam. Yes, a lot of people hate Steam. But don't you want a lot of people playing this game?
Just imagine what QL could've been had it been on Steam. (OK, same game, just more players)

Agree, leadership is very important. I would like to see a difference made between public and competitive play and then some "PR" around why competitive play is the so called "next-step".
I also think Steam is a good idea, us oldskool players don't like it because it interferes too much, you're too dependent on it, etc. For the newer people it's great, accessible, good promotion, etc. I think the other versions of UT are also on Steam, wouldn't be surprised to see this one there (in a later phase).

UT has always had a lot of mods that you could download easy by just connecting to the server so i don't think it will be much different then the other UT games. A competitive mod will be made that everyone who plays competitive use. Small shit mods wont have any players... ect. Same as usual.

From now on we should maybe try to gather ppl that know what they are doing and try to throw some valid ideas and arguments on the table, list it, establish priorities etc with objective ppl =) .A kind of syndicate of players to create a concept book for the game. Actually I just added her to facebook, basically after a wall of text from myself, trying to reach her to explain competitive players are very interested in collaborate directly with epic, and that I actually tryed doing that in the past for UT3, the only answer i've got so far was "Join the unrealengine forums". That's why mate i think we should try to join an IRc channel, nothing formal you know, but just discussing and finding our best objective idea of what would be the perfect UT.
We gather all the thoughts a structured way: detailed in various sections (gameplay / design / etc), everything tidied in a .doc document, and THEN only (when all the early days fuss will go down a bit) we can create a topic voicing our opinion.
I think it will have way more weight (well i can't be sure ofc, but i sincerely think though)than just all of us posting here and there to say "yes i agree, no i dont".

UT4 will be their selling/entry point for their marketplace.
Compare it too steam selling user made content and taking a chunk out of every sold item.

Think of it like this, UT3 was their flagship game and they treated it like shit..
UT4 will come second hand to the marketplace and will most likely be treated even worse then UT3.

The biggest problem with UT3 was that it was a flagship game for consoles imo.

A smaller team with people who are passionate about UT and a PC focus sounds a lot better to me.

thats exactly what free to play means (core game is free, some additional content will have a price). if it was "free" there wouldnt be a marketplace with money involved to begin with. im not saying here the game should be free (because someone has to be paid) but branding it as "its not free2play guys, its really free!" even tho it isnt, just to dodge the free2play term with all the negative sound it has aquired (thanks to pay2win and whatnot) .. is fishy.

This is BS talk anyways. Everybody knows what went wrong for Quake and UT. Both ID and EPIC made perfect products back in 99. Along the years we only needed better updates with same gameplay .Are starcraft or WoW so much diffrent from now that there were in beggining? No !!!! And they are still played by millions everyday. So what I am saying . Make same games like before with same gameplay, same fps, similar map structures and some weapons ,graphicks,internet updates. U cant change what is already perfect. I think most ESRs have been through the next possible DM game to revise the community. We've been through over a decade of these... I'm glad to hear this news but I'll wait till it's realeased to make any judgements.

In the thorin/carmac interview carmac commented on a mod that has taken over ut99 and "destroyed" the game from what it was.

i dont remember any ut99 mod destroying the game and I played till the last eurocup in ut99 and at that time ut2003 was already out so I wonder what you are referring to?

We went from the regular tickrate to higher ones (20 in 200, 75 in ctf in 2014). This borked all the weapons, over-over powering them, like making the sniper in kind of a minigun. Then a tickrate independent weapons mod was created (CB12) which fucked up minigun, pulse, actually removing the minigun lockdown. Now that CB12 is called PureStat.

Those were gameplay changes generated by the community and I think he might have referred to that (since maybe he wasn't the sniper whore like GitzZz, he wanted the lockdown on the minigun). We are still suffering from hardskin, 6pack rockets in the enemy face not killing and whatnot, because we are forcing the game server to run a lot faster than it was intend to do.

well every proper league had standard settings of tickrate forced to 35 or 45. You could check the tickrate of a server per commandline so I still dont see how that fucked up anything.

you can blame wannabe serveradmins though or some miniwhores :)

btw .. some people say the games were great from the start (quake and ut), but I remember they were quite shit for competitive gaming until osp and utcomp/ttm mods came out. And those were community contributions not id or epic.

I think competitive features will be made if there's (enough) competition, not the other way around.

You are right there are more casual gamers! But he is still right though, if you force a game to be competitive it's not as easy as you think it will be, I don't say that for all Quake players, but the people I know IRL (and some online from a PC community) they mostly played Q3 because of the vanilla version, mods came after, but the vanilla had what it takes to push people play more competitive. And these people were casual gamers at first. That's the same with people I know from vCOD, COD2 PAM and COD4 Promod...

The only mod ut99 needed was no-amp for duel. This was available soon after release. Beyond that voting mods were available fairly quickly.

ttm did not bring much else to the table beyond these two. Accuracy stats and hittones, while nice, are not required for competitive play. In fact the latter for ut99 was a step backwards as it is quite spammy. If anything ttm was better for pub play since it had warmup - not required for competitive games.

Unless the ttm developer went super active after 2003 when I stopped playing I don't recall ttm bringing much that was previously unavailable?

Map wise the ut99 maps were pretty ok overall and the epic map packs added a few extra maps for each gametype that were decent. Or rather the maps were good enough and third party rarely got a shoe in when it came to competitive play. Dueling on tempest was retarded no matter how you spin it..

ut99 was probably one of the most polished out of the box FPS games ever. This was surely in part to it being more like a giant level pack + update for unreal rather than a stand alone game. Unreal was polished already.

I am excited to see how this will work out. Though I somehow expect that it won't become a game that the competitive community is looking for. I guess they make a flashy game with vehicles and let the community create a pro-mod. Then there will be arguing which mod to use or if brightskins destroy the game and the game won't ever take off in esports.
Also for a successful multiplayer game a good platform similar to battlenet is needed. I doubt, that they can realize this with a small team.

Also, (coming from ut myself) I always found that the competitive gameplay of UT doesn't allow as much depth as the gameplay of Quake.

Still, lets see what comes out of this. My hopes still lie on Reborn :)

They should create sthg considering both environments. Neglecting casuals (that represent a by part of a game population) would be a crucial mistake.
A standard-ish solid gameplay (w/e bs haters say, ut3 core gameplay is very solid and quite balanced) and then having a special mode like CPM.
Ppl who just wanna play and relax dont need hardcore players that like competition or tryhards. They can enjoy their little Warfare vehicle mode peacefully while the competition addicts can play a CPM/Utcomp Duel/TDM mode with sharper gameplay - weapon balance. And why not, join later the more competitive part of the players but when HE will decide to.

That's basically what utcomp does but a more limitated way (not modifying gameplay mechanics).

My fear about the tight-knit relationship with the hardcore community is that hc audience's tastes are generally conservative. UT's advantage is the breath and assortment of varying game modes. What they really should do is try something fresh with a new game mode. Ripping off U2XMP and giving Onslaught/Warfare different classes would be a good starting point. God I loved that game.

or simply edit the user.ini in the ut system folder

ok, but value of sensitivity with unreal engine is different, so I cant use it from quake.

Measure cm/360 and use trial & error with sensitivity values.

when I tried ut3 first time the feeling was bad. Quake is ok for me even without config. I didn't play ut2k4 before btw. Tried it few days ago. I tried ut3 first.

No problem man, u can't imagine how much ppl i helped for hours just to help them set their ut3 or just play with them in warmup mode. I insist, on whatever skill they were, and i will be glad to do it with you too if you want.
You will find ppl of everyskill really in ut3, what will depend is more the mod u will play.
On the sidenote, with the announcement of the new UT, epicgames certainly encouraged or maybe it's steam by themselves the unrealdealpack with all ut for few bucks, so there are quite some new comers. FFA is still one of the most played ut3 mod, so trust me you would not have problem to find games (as long as you are in Europe but for dm, even usa should have few servers).

If you just wanna test out how i play the game (120fps mid- gfx details / no accel / no fancy effects), just give me your screen reso, the framerate u want to play with and maybe if you prefer ut99 like gfx or if just mid quality would be enough.

Balanced in term of gameplay? I would say yes, objectively yes.
It was the most balanced with a tendency to be too spammy ://// . Ut3 didnt "fail" like haters tend to say because it was bad but because of a parody of a release(bug/unfinished) , lets be honest and lack of speed from epic to react/fix it FAST. Coupled with a really not good time to release it (right in the ascension of the realistic shooter era).
Still far to be perfect, but with all the fixes and mutators we have now, it's an excellent game really. Anyway i'm not gonna go offtopic more than i already did and i prefer to help you via IRC or ts or whatever, just pm me a way to contact you if you want it :p .

That was one of the reasons all UTs died ages ago while people still play freakin QW and are still discovering new tricks on 17 year old maps. Movement in Quake games is an art.

As far as I know, the QW community (as in players) is very small and I'd be willing to bet there's as many people playing EACH version of UT as there is QW...

The ability to make numerous alt accounts really hurt the existing system in place. Plus it was way too easy to move up to tier 4. All in all, not enough was done when players were around to keep the system from being abused. In retrospective, the developers never saw it as a priority, when it should have been priority #1 especially since their home page advertised a skill matched game.

How can people honestly hate strafe jumping? Having never played UT and only seen videos, the dodge mechanic looks jerky and unnatural. I accept that I cannot comment on how it interacts in game having only seen videos. Good talk.

There is no DeFraG for UT as far as I know, yet the movement of ALL quake games has jump mods or jump maps for it. Sure we're all 'hardcore nerdy motherfuckers' (as some 'casuals' might like to put it, but strafing is not really that hard to figure out. Hard to perfect, sure, that's the case with any aspect of Arena DM, be it Quake, Warsow, UT, or Painkiller. If you take away movement you take away the fundamental aspect of what makes the game function as an Arena FPS.


I'd also like to throw in here that the term 'casuals' and 'hardcore' is some excellent stuff in terms of separating a community. The hardcore people think the casuals are here to destroy their perfect game by dumbing it down and the casuals think the hardcore people are way too serious about a video game and should chill the fuck out and get laid. The ironic thing to me is that both sides just want to play the fucking game. So why can't the 'casuals' realize that they're playing a game with a vastly high skill ceiling and if they're not committed to putting in the time, they might just get decimated every now and then. On the other hand, why do people who are good at the game generally have to be cuntfucks in game and kick people who are deemed bad because they're deteriorating the quality of the game? As a great player, you might have someone really bad on your team and you might just lose a public team match. As a horrible player you might get spawned next to a really good guy and he'll cream you. Both parties suffer equally. Can't you just set aside your egos for a little bit and mash some keyboard and mice together as humans who are lucky enough to share a mutual interest in what is probably the funnest style of video game ever made?

I said it looks jerky and unnatural, which it does. Strafing doesn't look jerky or unnatural, it's simply 'hard to understand' (as I'm sure dodge is in UT). Quake's movement has always been smooth, from Quakeworld style aircontrol replicated in CPM to VQ3/VQL style straight forward dodging or the quick double jumps possible in Q2. I didn't say the jerkiness of UT was detrimental as I only played single player and specifically said I cannot comment on it ingame.

I am glad to hear there is a movement mod for UT as well. More proof that movement in any shape or form = fundamental to Arena FPS.

A bit of an offtopic (instead of criticizing people): When that works it's amazing. Plus the OP and some comments are right: finding servers is so 1999, even more so having to do matchmaking yourself telling by some green and red bars in the interface and via an external site. Nowadays QL is very stuck in the past matchmaking wise, heck it's worse than before, and the new UT should not go that way, furthermore no one does.

Yet some things are never addressed. As originally a ut99 player, one thing that stands out is the OMG retarded armor system. Noone ever really talked about this back then*

On a faceit stream ddk commented on qw vs ql in duel/tdm terms and why the armor/wepaon/pickup structure in each game gives better/worse results in game types. Or rather he said about that much, said he should write something and I haven't seen anything since. Also he has mentioned that its crazy games have the same system across game types - the ql/qw example highlights this because one works really well in one but not the other and vice versa.

That sort of input is needed here imo. Not the usual "we need GTV", someone to speak up and outline how to make a good TDM game. A good duel game. A good CTF game. Based around a movement and weapon set. imo the competitive players are lacking in this regard. Maybe they can handle discussions around weapon balance and map changes, but for the pickup system, the real core of the game, they suck.

And I think part of the problem is the divide between games. It needs someone who has played multiple titles from both franchises, at the very least someone with the understanding of DDK in qw tdm.
