qcon is a bigger deal than dreamhack and its going to be bigger with carmacks speech bringing in an even larger audience now that hes connected to facebook. Europeans might hate to admit it but the USA is the largest market in the world, its why most of you europeans don't even get advertisements on twitch.

Ask LoL how major exposure works for esports media around the world will be waiting to get a scoop on facebooks new toy and the scoop is going to come at qcon. This will be like the super bowl of gaming. They should host it in jerry's world but logistics would probably be impossible.

QuakeCon is a bigger deal than Dreamhack because of Carmack? I don't think so. Especially not now that he's no longer even connected with the game. He left the company remember?

I doubt being connected with Facebook will get him more fans. And it's not even sure that Carmack will make a speech at Qcon at all. But if there is a talk there will be an audience, sure. He could talk about his bowel movements and there will be an audience.

Do you have a source for this? How do you know Europeans get less ads than Americans? Do you use a proxy and compare?
Twitch is an American company and probably have (a lot) more American streamers and viewers than European - so if Americans do get more ads I would guess it's because of that and not because of the consumer market in general, which is more or less the same size anyway.

28 countries still being smaller than the US market should give you an idea how large the US market is, hey if you keep adding countries maybe someday you can be as big as America. I don't think Russia will enjoy you adding countries close to its border though. 1 single country > entire European union. Facebook is one of the largest advertising platforms in the world it would be wise of them to advertise a guy doing a major keynote on a product they spent billions on. Texas alone out produces Sweden in basically every thing. Qcon this year will have media from places like japan and South Korea simply because they are very tech savvy nations and John Carmack is a big deal. Japan and South Korea two other huge markets. Dreamhack might draw in South Korea for moba but it will not draw in Japan.

First things first, not more than 2000 people watch the carmack speech live. That's next to nothing.

Secondly, the speech has nothing to do with the tournaments. The speech could have a million viewers, still irrelevant for quake.

In the past, not this year this is larger than esports, oculus is a world changer with how facebook wants to use it it goes way beyond gaming, media from more than just esports will be covering this event, and Quake is still the main event of Quakecon not a side thought like it is at dreamhack well was. They will also cover the where and why not just say John Carmack gave a speech, Titan made a great investment in Cypher they are very lucky to have made that deal with him, Titan will get major exposure from this event. I could see Titan becoming the next powerhouse in esports from this. Twitch viewers doesn't mean much twitch is very small, what means the most is who is writing about the event or covering the event.

Also id has let all these guys know that it is CTF this year (at quakecon), just like they let specific people know its TDM in 2011. Would make more sense to just release it publicly to everyone but this is id software we're talking about, they rarely ever make sense. :(

I think you're reading in to this the wrong way. How you should be interpreting this tournament is that a group of CTF players are trying to convince SyncError that it is worth having CTF at QCON this year.

I'm not reading into anything, I've been relayed this information by one of the people sync has deemed important who says hes been tipped off, this happened in 2011 also around the same amount of time before. Why do you think Wyz started practicing TDM months on end in hops of finding a qcon sponsor (only to quit tdm when no sponsor materialized, lol)?

I don't really care cause qcon is a gong show regardless of the mode.. I just know that information released months instead of weeks in advance would give the online scene a chance to do some things, teams to find their game, fun to be had etc.

It actually doesn't work like that at all. SyncError does a frustratingly good job at keeping things quiet up until he's ready to make a public announcement. the "pro ctf bro circle" would MAYBE find out a couple weeks before the public, but certainly not months- and only as a means to get guidance towards rules/maps/etc, certainly not to provide an advantage or show favoritism. This was the case last year, and the year before.

I have an idea how about a draft pool for the team event where there is 32-40 players. If you are attending you can sign up and then it is up to id software on who is able to attend the draft. I think you would see a much more exciting team event just due to the top 8 players not being on the top two teams. You could stream the draft picks, which would add a cool twist to the whole event. Just a thought.

Domination matches at lan could be very, very, very boring to watch; even worse than lolca at quakecon.

When there's money and e-pride on the line gameplay will vastly differ from public servers.

domination is more like tdm+ffa combo and less like ctf to be honest. That being said its one of the best new modes I have seen, wish there were more people playing it.
