duel. i have an average of 1 possible opponent on any given weekday evening.

Duel when I'm in the mood, ffa, been playing more ctf lately, and tdm pickups also when I'm in the mood.

Mostly instaFT and CA. TDM pickups sometimes.

Mostly CA because that's the only game type that even semi-consistently has players on servers with playable ping for me.

I would love to play more Duel and CTF, probably even TDM, if there were simply the players for it. Sometimes I just play "practice" games against bots when there either isn't an attractive server to play, or I am feeling too lazy to compete.

Why exactly is NA dead, anyways?

IRC isn't dead, it's just that new people never join or say anything. And the players who are there idle because there are never enough interested players to get a pickup going.

On that note, I'm gonna be afk for about a week because I'm out of town.

Pickups have been less active past 2-3 weeks, but on average we have 25-30 pickups a week (90% ctf). Not amazing admittedly but there are always people dueling on any of those servers

We just never actively advertise it and we don't go around playing Quake Live talking about it.

Most ca players are the scum of the earth and refuse to touch anything but ca. So you can see why the North American community doesn't play other gamemodes.

When I ask my ca buddies why they won't play other gamemodes the most common answer I get is 'nah, I'm ca only.' You're saying it's our fault that quake is stale and dead? It's ridiculous to point fingers at who's causing the problem because it's the whole community that's behind it.

Not really. The whole community here is really small compared to Europe, like pitifully small. It's nearly impossible to find a good duel during the day, and you'll often run into much better players at night.

I'm talking about quake live. But I think cpm players can find games because they're tighter knit than the live community and they gather in irc to organize games. Most live players just play pubs and don't bother playing pickups.

The average attention span and age of a person playing clan arena in Quake Live in North America is nil to none, and the age is 14-18. I swear they are all braindead. NA Quake live has never been organized. The failures of #qlpickup and #quakelive in GameSurge years ago proves it.

Okay... for all of you doomsayers saying Challenge ProMode Arena has 1 server you are fucking retarded.

It has like seven to ten servers visible in server browser based in the United States (or Canada) like four UK servers where an east coaster can ping like 79-86 on a really good connect. Then we have like four servers that you can't see in server browser, like erhiy's and mafia's that are used by people. Duels happen at all hours, the skill gap is HUGE though. I admit the choice between Lolograde, Mafia, Gramz, Kwong, or a brand new player from Xonotic or quake live can cause HUGE disparities. The difference between all of these players is already a huge gap in and of itself.

The #USCPMPickup channel on IRC has rarely less than fifty people and most of the time up to 70-100 people idling it.

Pickups for CTF happen all the time. You can bet you will get a game in at the end of a long week about six times in a row. That's twenty minutes of six games. That's 2 hours of gaming. Sadly, pickups take a full forty minutes to start to choose teams, and to bullshit in chat. So that's like four hours of your life.

If that's no activity that's bullshit.

As for QuakeWorld in NA. There are more servers. Like twenty to thirty I think located in the US. Half are unplayable unless you like TeamFortress mod or a schizophrenic known as RedDrum's weird server mod (who has watched too much of the shining or read too much on it "The Overlook Hotel" is the name of the server).

The channel to idle is #qw.na. There are never if ever 4v4s. Most of the regulars from years ago are doing other things now. You can however catch a duel and a 2v2 on most days or a DMM4 (1v1 ca ala heartless). People like Bolwind, Matab, Dr4ko, and BogoJoker are good bets for always being down to play.

I'd argue CPM is more active.

Warsow feels relatively dead to me, even two years ago when I played it for a month straight, I had an easier time finding games against the Japanese with +300 ping (still owning them, they suck that bad at movement and shit).

Any other arena shooter is a joke or dead to me. Especially Quake Live.
