In an email today, World Cyber Games CEO Brad Lee has stated that the organization will not organize e-sports events in the future.

In his statement, Lee thanks all the dedicated fans and the staff of WCG for making the WCG-events some of the best in the world.

That's what happens when you drop quake.

On a more serious note, this is quite sad. The WCG was one of the oldest big lans around, and I think one of those who aimed at blurring the line between esports and sports.

Does anyone have a clue on why this happened? I thought esports as a whole were a growing business.

The commercial aspect of an event should come secondary to the eSports being played there.

The last years were the other way around for WCG.

That is bullshit. How are events possibly supposed to finance themselves for prize money, overheads, staff, etc if they don't even consider whether or not the event is economically viable. So many of the big players in LAN events went bust because its a damn hard business to make money in.

I remember the days when the CPL awarded $40,000 to Fatal1ty for 1st place in Q3 - didn't take long for them to disappear. Now the biggest prizes are what, $5000?

If the community can find a way to make events financially viable without sacrificing the quality of the eSports being played, everyone wins. Otherwise you should stick to playing LANs in your friend's basement.

WCG was probably the best tournament back over 10 years ago now when they had quake3 tournaments. I had so much fun at those events in comparison to other tournaments.

I think what we need to remember, when bashing WCG for not having Quake since 2002 is that every e-sport organization that fails and shuts down is less activity on our scene.

With no WCG there's definitely 0 % chance of Quake happening at a WCG event ever again, and that's never better than the 0.1 % chance there might have been before.

In 2006 they took in Quake 4 for an all star-tournament. Who knows if that could have happened again.

Lots of guest interviews focusing on what WCG has meant and given to people and the e-sports scene during the past 14 years.

Quake, CS, Halo, RTS players, hall of famers and so on.

White-Ra, SeleCT, Walshy, rambo ... and Fatal1ty at the end.

Great picks from the Quake days as well in the first hour. Like cooller throwing a match to screw over zero4 ...
