Make the sunday show be something else than duel once a month maybe OR host a second show once/twice/whatever a month with different content. 1 month could consist of 4x sunday duel show and 1 TDM and 1 CTF show on thursdays for example. Or you can do 3 duel shows on sundays and the 4th sunday is alternating between CTF and TDM.

Stop with the madness that is the daily cups, especially for the teammodes. You are completely oversaturating the scene. No one is gonna schedule their day around a cup that has 1-3 signups

from an objective perspective : switch it up a bit, give us more TDM and CTF

from a subjective perspective : the stream has a fake professional vibe imho. It's two guys, a camera and an internet connection, no need for TV antics. I think more banter and improvisation would be profitable for everyone, but what do I know ? Maybe your sponsors want this...

Yeah im pretty sure it wouldnt feel as stale as it is if it was:

Week 1 duel, week 2 tdm, week 3 duel, week 4 ctf, week 5 duel, week 6 tdm etc.

that way its 2 duel cups per month with 1 for ctf and 1 for tdm and the duel crowd would certainly start to appreciate what they have, now they are just used to the pandering with a cup every sunday + it would draw a different playerbase to use the site and to view the streams

I'm sure you feel like there's too much duel and not enough tdm/ctf.

But as of now, and especially since there's no 125fps atm, we only have 1 cup a week. And even when we had 125fps, in terms of players, I only played one groupstage once a month and a couple bo3's when reaching playoffs. That isn't that much.

Having to wait 1 week to play a few competitive games right now feels empty tbh...

Well, if you don't want to watch zoot's stream, dont. And zoot isn't really a tdm or a ctf caster. If you want tdm/ctf cups feel free to make them happen. It's not like we got one twitch tv channel dedicated for QL at once huh. Anyone can feel free to organize some tdm cup and stream it while zoot streams the 125fps

I can see how you think there's a duel overdose with that erryday zoot streamin some 125fps. That doesn't mean I got to play it though, so I don't really see it the same way.

If anything, go rant at disrepute/vor/nvc so they can do something about it, but don't ask zoot to stop streaming duel or to start streaming tdm/ctf, eventhough he might, and I wouldn't mind. Don't shout at faceit either demanding to get ctf/tdm going when really they make one stream per week for QL and that's painful enough to know when the sunday cup is done that you won't get another piece of competitive 1v1 quake until next weekend, without even beeing sure of attending it.

Faceit minds about viewership aswell. Don't think they would get as many viewers with tdm or ctf as they do with duel when there's cypher/evil/cooller/etc. featured to deliver.

"absence makes the heart grow fonder" perfectly fits the situation, people arent massively interested in these weekly duel cups anymore because they happen SO often and its always the same players. if there were less streams everyone would tune in when they happen and you'd have more and better signups. meanwhile you can do a service to the other parts of the community (btw even these failing tdm leagues etc have more players involved than faceit duel or 125 fps cups)

and what comes to hosting our own cups/leagues. we had a perfect tdm league planned out with a website, a team of admins etc. only thing missing was a guy who could host a weekly 3 hour show and we asked everyone we thought were capable of what we needed and none of them could do it for various reasons.

Less and less competition = less and less players anyway. So this is some flawed logic here.

TBH it looks like the issue here is that you are missing dedicated streamers/casters for this. So either you find some or you convince zoot to do it. I'm sure he wouldnt mind to make some of these cups instead of 125fps once in a while. But I'm not for faceit to change their weekly cup :/

Even if this is an exaggeration, which I know it is, my point is that it's gaming over the internet, no need to try and be all professional and shit.

That's why zoot has almost the same amount of viewers during the week! But everytime zoot casts faceit/quakecon he turns into this serious bsns guy I just wanna punch -.-. Whole faceit show feels fake and sterile.
Just take a look at the current best esport casters and compare them to ddk (2gd, ld from bts, joe). I don't think ddk acts the same way in rl and I think he could loosen up a bit instead of adding one fancy word after another one. Just my opinion tho some people may enjoy it but I prefer brit casters and not fake brit almost american ones :O

ddk is amazing, he has a great level of professionalism and he acted like that on comms as well. He also has a great insight of the game and very witty! more ddk i say! - and I agree zoot can sound annoying at times, but I think that's his accent that makes him sound like that :> (no offense zoot!!)

I think you miss the grand vision behind faceit. My understanding, which comes by simply connecting the dots, is:

Faceit has two sides, a platform and a tv. The ultimate goal is for both to thrive, i.e. tons of players using the platform, tons of spectators watching the shows. I know, because I talked to them, that they consciously decided to go for the professional way. This may not be optimal for the current niche and numbers, but the current niche and numbers are a stage in their development.

No i do get what they're trying to do, I just don't really believe in it. I never really believed in "professional" e-sports and would rather have a great niche, DYI, fun community than a masquarade of professionalism.

Might be a unpopular opinion but it's how I see things.

I have the feeling this choice (professional vs amateur) is really marginal to the actual matter (esport industry). In korea - the only place where esport is a reality (besides this site, aha, fat chance!) you do have both (the lone caster wearing a t-shirt in his room, to the stadium stage with uber production). Everything coexist because at the base, you have a functioning industry, which we do not have (yet?).

Now, while everything contributes to the growth of esport as industry, it's really hard to say what counts more and how/if it will reach that state in the western world. I consider this topic more a question of where you see yourself in it, and on the consumption side, what you like. So I see your stance as entitled as theirs, with the understanding both can coexist.

Would like to see Syncerror work with Face it and integrating it into the stand alone, a lot of people playing Quake Live have no idea what Face it is. Having to go to a separate website log in and sign up is obsolete and out dated, games like Dota 2 have integrated tournament sign ups into the games UI. Just logging into Quake Live and having Face it brought to you, would up your participation. Prism helped but again not every one was using Prism it should be built into the game.

As for the actual show do not forget people do play Quake in the USA, and agree on switching up game types for sunday would also recommend more audience interaction, in which ever fun ways you can think of.

Realistically, there should be a faceit cup script for the qlhm.

I'd by happy if to the very least it says something on the launcher (before server browser), every week.

For example the news says "WATCH: FaceIT #99 Stream", which is a direct link that when pressed goes directly to twitch.

Billboards scattered throughout the maps could be used to inform players of upcoming/in-progress tournaments. They shouldn't have to be major tournaments to garner that sort of publicity either. The Quake Live game and the tournament scene are incredibly disjoined, and so it would be beneficial to merge the two together: when I introduce people to Quake Live they think it's a dead game, but if they were able to witness current tournament news on the billboards they'd see it's quite active, and has a future; plus the publicity would surely create greater interest and participation in the tournaments.

Tournament winners could perhaps have their face* and accomplishments on the billboards for a day of Quake-fame. The billboards aren't being used for their original purpose, and so they just sit there, neglected. They could be a great tool in helping tournament participation.

*The anonymous nature of Quake Live is a contributing factor to its hostile environment. If players were able to create a profile for themselves (entailing things like age, location, equipment, past tournament wins, a profile picture, etc.) and there was a reputation system in place, with disrespectful members being banned from tournaments, then perhaps we'd see a positive change in the environment.

There is a very large number of low skilled players that don't even know there are competitions in QL. Get in low tier servers and advertise massively your cups there. Don't forget to mention that players are separated according to their skill level so that everyone can have fun.

1. Faceit sunday cups are awesome to watch. Huge respect! One thing could be improved as was mentioned - a bit diversity - once a month different gamemode.

2. Subscribed in aug 2013 to Faceit to play skillmatched duels - I decided not to renew it (atleast before I saw that thread).

Reasons: daily tournaments are good, but I have only one cup a day of my level - for me it's hard to be ready to play during the week at a certain time (no cups at weekends). Prizes a not so important for me (though its fun that they are exist).

I'd rather wish skillmatched duels at any time between players who are online and applied for a duel game - i'm surprised that priority is given to pickups, tourneys and direct challenges instead of duel mm.

3. Public chat only works real time - if somebody asked for a game a while ago - you don't even have a time stamp to know when it happened.

4. Some painful bugs like - some users don't see your messages - they can ask admin to drop you from the tournament - you dropped w/o asking/ensuring and then you can't call admin on platform - only on irc that can be impossible to wait for reply. So your games are finished that day.

5. No news on platform - after New Year I had no idea when daily cups will start - which are what I pay for. No answer on irc channel. No info what is improved... what are you working on to improve, if no sunday streams I would think that platform is dead.

6. Feedback/suggestions are made for CSGO, no way a QL player can ask/suggest something on Faceit - I was surprised that thread on ESR appeared, thought that you are doing ok without communicating with community or even subscribers.

To end it up - if you care about sunday cups and its streaming - you are doing a very good job!
If you care about platform subscribers - read above please and make some considerations. I would renew sub If the answers in this thread will show that you are interested in doing something.

1) It seems as youre giving no importance to your daily cups. Theres no coverage: no streams (even without casters) and no results get posted here. Furthermore, they feel separated from sunday cups, which may be the only ones with prize money and importance, ok, but it wouldnt hurt if ddk mentioned winners etc. at the beginning of the show.
This way it seems as nothings happening.

2) As mentioned above, advertise more on Ql. There *really* is a BUNCH of people not having a clue what faceit is. I encountered quite a lot of semi-decent players who play duels or tdmpickups and were asking me if there are any tournaments going on at all.
They didnt even know about DHW, which only shows you how much of a fail the ql website is.

3) I very much enjoyed the xmas 2v2 cup and would love to see that continue somehow. 2v2 TDM is a great mod for both spectators and players and a good way to get new people involved in comptetive scene, as the pressure is much lower than in duel, not to mention the amount of fun. But it needs streams and coverage, no other way to popularize it.

4) Casting. Dont get me wrong here, DDK is currently by far the best caster around, its just I dont like this "lets smile and pretend everythings awesome at all times" way of presenting the show.
I just dont enjoy that. What I actually enjoy are his youtube videos with analysis and thoughts, hes great when hes natural himself.
Hearing stuff on wrong decisions and elaborating about which way is the game gonna go is sooo much more interesting than all the empty phrases and superlatives.

right, but they have in-game banners, and they don't need to make the warmup fullscreen, just use 1/4 screen or something. and also, even though the warmup isn't part of the official tourney play, i view casting of these activities as important to the sport - just like people like to know what footballers are doing/saying when off the field, so does the QL crowd like to see players chatting about Spart1e's latest drunken shenanigans, Cooller's new car dealership/wife, etc.

As it's 2014 already, it may be a good time to start using anti-aliasing and aniso-filtering :) Not a huge difference but looks better without the artifacts on edges and blurry textures.

It would be great if ddk talked less than 50% of the time during the match. I know you're more play by play commentator, but we see that he picks up a rocket, or a health, or that he is 100/100, no need to comment every shard.

Use more pauses, some seconds of silence, and try to talk more about the game or options itself than every step, or keep us informed what the other guy is doing or how his stack is, which we don't see at the moment.

Also, I always enjoyed it when there was a guest caster who really worked well with ddk as he seemed so much more natural when they were bullshitting around between maps. Think of the Pikachu thing, Sylvester the cat and stuff, that was really funny. It's been mentioned before, just be yourself and don't act toooo professional.

As for the maps, I think faceit should be the spearhead of promoting new and promising maps by adding them into the pool, to make people play it. Also, having new maps makes the whole thing so much more interesting and fresh cause you will see new stuff.

the key for that is preparation.

if you've ever watched any other pro-gaming stream, many of the commentators have tons of papers on table (i.e. Thorin) which contain many information about players, their history, what's coming next, .... (maybe they don't have to prepare for every sunday cup in that extent, but would be nice to see some preparation for season finale at least, when there are only 8 players)

as for the casting, i've been saying the same shit over and over again for more than a year that ddk just needs to slow down, he doesn't need to talk all the time like he's payed by every word he says (if that's the case then i completely understand)

and yeah, acting all professional just ends up looking fake and most of the times i'm rolling my eyes when i see that, but hey that's just me

the other stuff i would like to change is spec hud, but that's not FACEY's problem and they can't do anything about that

In order to improve the daily cups, i like the idea that the top finishers get something like a mentioning post. So theres more motivation to play.
For me to win 100 cups in order to gain a mousepad, its hard to keep up my motivation. And mb theres a possibility to add "awards" for achieved and future wins, so that information is kinda stored and visible. Its just a a small thing, but i would like it.

The ladder. Get within the top 10 and a shit ton of points for you :D I once finished 2nd in the month and got enough points for 2 of those mousepad. And only played 5tournaments

To do so i heff to get unlimited. At that point im not willing to invest that. Since im a lolcaplayer theres no competition to jusitify an unlimited acc. And four cupwins a month only got someone once in the topranks

I have standard. 5 or 4 games a month. Still finished 2nd in the ladder and got 7.5k points

So u got lucky ; d winning 4 cups a month didnt got me into those ranks ever

The lack of TDM and CTF "events" probably doesn't help. Perhaps it would be fun to make a Monthly theme. February TDM month, March CTF month, April CA month etc. With a main event in the first week of the month followed by free cups for that mode in that month only.

Also take a good look at the mappools for both TDM and CTF, I remember you putting maps like Courtyard and Siberia in there. If you want to put in different maps please put in some of the new maps such as Infinity, Pillbox, Cold Cathode alongside some of the fan favourites. Same thing applies to TDM.

About the stream:
-please, don't let ddk solo cast for the whole day, he obviously can't manage it. And this is not to criticize ddk, I don't think anybody would succeed in 7 hours of quality solo casting. I understand that flying guests is very costly, so just find someone that can cast via skype, even the short mexican guy if it's necessary, but just let the poor diddy key breath.
-I really didn't like the cg_lightningstyle 4 switch. if you want a thin shaft it's great, ok, but let's face it (lol) the animation is terrible. I would either go back to style 1 like Zoot or give style 2 a chance.

About point cups, i really think your best bet is to reduce the number of daily DUEL cups, since right now it's hard to find a cup with more than 4-5 partecipants. This way you could also increase the prize of the cups, because c'mon, ending up first and getting F300 feels very meh.
About team modes i think the same applies, there should be less of them and you should promote them more, maybe streaming them or allowing other people to stream them, zoot or lvlup guys would be top. I think many people tend to forget there are so many cups around at faceit and this would be a good way to promote them.
Also you should find a way to promote more the ladder and pickup games, basically nobody uses them afaik, and this is sad because they're much more accessible than pickups on irc and free.

These are my thoughts on the matter, I just wanted to add that I love you guys for supporting quake and the fact that you're still intending to support it is really awesome and i love you, which i already wrote.

It makes absolutely no sense to add to such tournament unless you're like top 8.

Really, I don't need to play tournaments to get owned by someone 500 Elo higher and be shown "you finished last".

Selling point for me would be promise of good games (and this can be done by running KOTH, Swiss System or QuakeCon system). Right now it's promise of rape game and you're out.


If you absolutely can't provide tournaments with any chance of progression (which is the only reason normal people would play in them), then make local and themed tournaments.

I'd love to compete against people from Warsaw, or people with longest posts on ESR or whatever other group I associate myself with. The main challenge here is getting the word out to interested people, but this can be done by having ambassadors on local forums for example.

Others would like a one map cups, like Delirium-only tournament. 125 FPS used to provide this kind of action in the past year, but now they're gone which opens up a window of opportunity for a new platform.

What about some sort of invite-only tournaments, maybe for lesser skilled players also. Good games guaranteed if you choose well who you invite. Dunno, just a thought.

And I don't mean rising stars as in, those who are just below the top players. Rising stars could be someone promising in the 1500-1700 range one day, then 1700-1900 next time.

I agree, and tbh I think there are enough "unknown" players in the 1900-2000 mark to do Rising Stars, although going down to 1500-1700 level might be less entertaining and also harder to cast

Imo the way to get more players into the <10 lvl cups is showcase those games, maybe cast them or something so people fee special and want to get maybe noticed, analyzed,watched, or just want to try something new. Right now, the cups are great, but theres little players as Roychez says, but trying to offer them something more than points could be a way in.

The only issue I have seen is the lack of admins during the week. The #faceit channel is basically an unending cascade of infuriated CS players saying "admin?" "any admin?" "no fuckin admin?" "admin ffs? what a joke" "admin? why no admin?" "admin? this shit sucks" for hours on end.

Website is horribly difficult to navigate - i have multiple issues with logging in, viewing content, etc. Is this the place to post specific issues, or should i be logging bugs/issues elsewhere?

by the way, i've checked things like firewall, adblocking, browser versions, etc., so i'm not just idiotically saying "it's all broken aaagggghhh" - i've already done some legwork

- Only let stermy cast if he doesnt party the night before (usually looks very tired when casting)

I agree, ddk and stermy casting is way better than ddk solo (and no, its not ddk's fault, he's doing a supreme job)

Seems like every time I went to try and play in duel cups it was just me added. Maybe it's only a North America problem but I ended up removing as opposed to being the winner of a 1 person cup.

I love faceit and I think you guys are really doing a great job. Only thing I would like to say is the last two streams are looking kind of bad. The color correction and the contrast are so off, too much green and too much contrast. Really hope you guys can fix this for the next sunday cup.

would be nice if all the sign ups did 3-4 FFA games (one game each) before the duels begin, maybe show one of them as a starter game for the sunday cup, it could also serve as a means of warming up all the participants and getting them gathered for smoother scheduling of the duels, while keeping a point system for the FFA results and the top points will meet for a finale each month or season in FFA. It adds a new game type with out much conflict at all with the regular duel cup.

also ddk stop talking over your guests as if its some competition for airtime, and start facilitating interesting incite-full conversation.

I think many of the older players find commentators more annoying than helpful and would appreciate a stream without talk, just quake sound.

If that is totally out of the question, then please raise the volume of the ingame sounds permanent.

the basic play by play is so distracting to me. like an echo a few seconds after every visual cue. i get that it might be needed to help newbies understand stuff, but man, do i dislike ddk and zoot... theyre just average casters at best for those that play/watch quake for more than a year.

Apparently the chat doesn't work properly (can't send messages (the other one can't see them)) and the mappools might have mismatches between esr/rules. Yesterday there was a different mappool for the same cup in the rules section. And the mappool is still in a non-pastable form, that should be an easy fix :l

There should be a copy-pastable one in the quick rules. For some reason the rules keep changing back the changes I make in the mappool..

DDK is awesome. I enjoy his casting tremendously. I love that he gets excited over amazing plays. I don't want some boring, static, non-excited git when crazy shit happens. I want someone to be like, "HOLY SHIT, THAT WAS AMAZING!!!"

I would like to see FaceIt start working on some variety, however. Would love to see what someone suggested above: Week 1: Duel Week 2: TDM Week 3: Duel Week 4: CTF, and rotate like this for the year. Make winning the duel tournament worth more points which may bring in the heavy hitters more often. Also, having TDM/CTF will hopefully spark the fire for the scene in that respect.

Aside from that, FaceIt is awesome and mad appreciation for them. I know we stunk it up in NA, and I don't even play much (at all) any more but I hope it can make another push.

DDK fits the first 4 items perfectly, while the other 3 sometimes not so much.
Storytelling is a weak point as almost never makes it to the show... we have to look for the storys elsewhere.
Tension management is often naturally good by DDK, as he changes the tone of his voice and even whispers when someone is creeping, but not always manages to put "the players life" on the line (Zoot somewhat does it better i think)
And playing a role is by obvious reasons the weaker poin as the side casters vary and i dont think they get shcooled on how not to overlap with ddk, but might at least give them some few tips before air to try and be the most complementary they can.

What do we think about having one-map cups again? It would require prizemoney donations, setup etc, but would be a good way to test out new maps like Fuse, Delirium etc. Or we could try having a mappool of all-new maps for FACEIT, alternate mappools each weekend, or inject one additional new map into the mappool etc. Something that would encourage more people to play new maps.

If we can get enough players, especially high/top-level players playing one-map cups, we could thoroughly test the suitability of these maps for tournament play. There's plenty of time between now and the next LAN (qcon/dhs (?)) to seriously try out maps like Fuse and Delirium. By then, there would be enough informed feedback to decide whether or not to include these kinds of maps in the mappool of LANs.

The current mappool is great and constantly changing map is a bad idea imo.

oh? sounds vaguely familiar, although sorry I don't remember exactly. fair enough if players/the community have already vetted maps like fuse and delirium, just as long as, collectively, players have put in enough playing time on newish maps to give good feedback.

cure and sinister have already been widely accepted, for example..maybe these two maps are all we need to have things changed up a bit in map pools. and silence has already been played at dhw 2012. you would hope that (top) player feedback factors largely into decisions regarding including/omitting maps from LAN pools.

Hello roychez, i am watching the final from this week, i notice the video has a too high gamma. Also you need to use antialiasing 4x or 8xplus and anisotropic filtering 16x realy. It's easy to do.

right, I guess I should open this post with some nice words about faceit supporting quake, making simple sunday cups something pretty big and listening to the community about a lot of things

now, after reading the last cup's thread, I was flabbergasted not to see anybody complaining about the general production or lack thereof (although I'm sure the chat went full meltdown at times)

now, I know there was a LoL tournament going on, making your platform grow and getting some well deserved money for all your efforts. but that tournament probably didn't pop out of nowhere, like getting out of bed on friday and being hit by the news. how could you be so unprepared about all this ? just setting up some random (badly advertised) community channel and that's it ?

-numerous sound issues
-no overlays
-gamebrowser with some small ass picture in a corner before/after the games
-copyrighted (I suppose) music during the (very long) breaks. not that I care, but I don't see why the same rules wouldn't apply between the main and the other channels ?

once ins was out of the cup, I thought "right, now he has somebody setting up games for him, it should go smoothly" but ddk seemed to be alone trying to do it all by himself and you could tell he was having a hard time. guys like zoot, nvc or disrepute are used to it and can edit overlays, launch a video/switch screen during breaks. poor ddk on the other hand was struggling mightily and while I applaud him for his work and dedication, most of those things shouldn't have happened.

did you test anything besides streaming the game and using your microphone ? were you in a rush preparing the LoL tournament and didn't have time to set up ddk properly ?

when somebody tells you there's no sound or your co-caster's voice is low, act immediately because it's probably very easy to fix. just wait for some standard situation like picking LG and yellow and check it out, it was pretty infuriating to watch ddk read the message and act like nothing's happening, AT LEAST aknowledge it and say you're going to fix asap. you reacted a bit more as it went along

I'm sure by now you already know this was pretty shambolic. with the game crashing two times during cooller/cypher and ddk pulling the console down, vods (thankfully somebody signaled it in chat otherwise we wouldn't have any) probably won't make it to youtube and some people might ask themselves what happened to the winter season cup #5

just going live an hour before, doing some tests, casting some random round of 128 game just to see if everything's fine would have helped immensely instead of winging it

really surprising coming from an organization priding itself on professionalism

again, it's still better than not watching the games at all and it was okay for the most important matches. you could also say it showed we (I) grew accustomed to some degree of production and you're a big reason for that. but it's not something you'd want to show under the faceit brand

While I acknowledge the production and such was far from perfect, I have to admit our initial idea was to run no stream at all. On one of the days before, ddk decided he did wanted to stream it, so we thought it would be a good test run for the FACEIT Community channel.

Obviously all of the production team and graphic designers - being such a small team - had their focus on the LoL tournament and thus weren't able to help him out.

a simple overlay with the name of the cup, the game coming up and ddk's cam somewhere would do nicely. during the breaks : razer ads or season finale fragmovies ? during games : maybe a little overlay somewhere with ro64/32/16 and so on just so we know what round it is, easy to edit

maybe some kind of bracket during breaks so we know who's made it, what's coming up and people voting in a poll to watch this or that game (clearly optional, would be sweet, though). but ddk chichating and scrolling the faceit bracket, discussing matchups with his guest is pretty good and keeps it simple on the technical side

Have twitter chat ticker on the bottom of the stream. Watching fullscreen could be a little more exciting with GTV style comments

Spectator interaction - have a live bet going on for streamed match and display it on the hud. Since the bracket is semi automatic, so could be the bet. No stakes is fine to start. In other smaller channels casters just make a straw poll and display the results. This is also important because people who don't have time or skill to play get to be a part of the event.

Exposure: push VOD of the final out to the world. Reddit, FB, twitter, etc. I did not care to start watching whole day tournaments until i realized how high quality of the game and casting was (minus last week with LoL overtake)

am i the only one who don't receive the weekly Faceit "news" on my e-mail anymore ? :/
