Ye i somehow managed to make a 6 frag comeback on the last 2-3 minutes of my cure match vs spartie. I think I was the only low seed to take a map off a top seed, I don't think anyone was expecting that, especially not me.

I would still have to vote for my mate plazma for most unexpected performance.

phantom maybe, dunno what people expected but to me he looked better than expected

i tought he was close to that level of play. Too bad he hit a solid 0% in every whole first second of his lg in every fight. Also the Rail looked off.

plazma: beating both twister and matr0x - something I think barely anyone expected.

ph4ntom was extremely good considering he doesnt have the opportunity to practice with the european 1337. i thought he would be roflstomped.

Plazma, Gienon and Etty (in this order)

People were talking about Aussies, Southafricans, Sting, Matr0x, Fazz etc, but almost no one mentioned these 3 to cause upsets or even go out of the groups. No would be also a good choice, but I think mentioned above deserve it more.

I wouldn't consider gienon and etty upsets. Everyone who follows the duel scene closely knows they are good players. Their group had evil and avek who were obviously going through and then sting and detrony competing for 3rd/4th place who were two of the weaker (maybe even weakest) top seeds. If you look at predictions from the group drawing threads they are very mixed with many predicting etty or gienon.

Much more unexpected imo:
Plazma obviously who beat me, ph4ntom and matrox to place 3rd in the group.

Bpatela who beat Lars, Sothis and Zeun handily and played close against all of Fazz, Tox, Fraze and Dem0n in particular almost beating Fazz (3-2 on maps, 3-2 loss on ztn).

No_il - 1700-1800 elo online, never any sort of victories against good players. Comes to lan and beats me, matrox and plazma on hub, also takes cure against spart1e.

Against zeun yes, against sothis and lars I would say he may have been slight favorite aswell. The unexpected part for me were the tense games against the high and top seeds.

About Etty and Gienon - yeah, their group was quite certainly easier, but I don't think there were many people who said before tournament that Gienon will beat Sting (he actually didn't, but placed higher in the group).

Bpatela - I kind of expected him to play well. I just checked, he was top8 in september 125 fps league and top12 in october. He got really unlucky with drawings, dem0n and Fraze were top4 from top seeds (with k1llsen and +one).

About No - I just checked his results, he's great on hub, but he got crushed on almost every other map besides few. One map vs Spart1e is not enough even if you're such an underdog like him.

Anyway, probably Plazma will take it :D

Thanks, I definitely surprised myself as well, still I would have to give the award for most unexpected performance to plazma. Bpatela played really well and out all the players who didn't advance to group stage he diffidently deserved it the most, still I can't say I wasn't expecting such a performance by him though.

I managed to make a 5 or 6 frag comeback against spartie on cure in less then 3 minutes, maybe I should try and submit for best comeback although I feel like he wasn't playing up to his normal standard and it was more of an unexpected upset (considering I'm the only low seed to take a map off a top seed) then a great match so I'm not sure if I want to submit myself just yet. I'd anyways donate the money back to faceit/125fps or some other quake related cause if I were to actually win it.

i actually said before the event be aware of etty because he usually plays on a 1hz monitor so on LAN he can actually gain superpowers. So yeah, i'm awesome

Also he confidently mowed down me, brescia and zeun, and every one of us 3 played quite good too, but still not poaing that big of a challenge for him. My vote is for him

Off topic, but the playoffs were a bit of a disappointment, no? Final and rapha/dahang the only five mappers, and all other games 3:0 with only one other exception, if I recall correctly. This means 13 3:0 games versus 2 five and one four mapper.

Maybe, but tox/evil, evil/rapha and avek/cypher were real, anticlimatic bummers. Spartie seemed to underperform, too. Not meaning to indulge in wild speculation here, but my feeling was that our (naturally fragile?) pro player heroes might not have been comfortable.

what do you mean by not comfortable? some people who had never been to a lan before performed far better than anyone expected, and as for the pro heroes, adapting to the LAN and performing is part of what defines them being a pro anyway. The only instance of someone being visibly uncomfortable was evil when playing vs rapha. He just went apeshit.

Just a hunch, might be anything. Monitors, surroundings, atmosphere, whatever. Newcomers probably being more resistant of course, because they're excited enough to be on a lan anyway, and lacking the comparison.

But as said, just wild speculation.

Etty was way more unexpected imo.

The whole problem here is that this nominations are as subjective as you can get because of depending on what were somebody's expectations. I kinda like it and hope there will be some voting (I actually don't know whether there is going to be a poll or the judges will make decisions by themselves).

Yes I agree. I just wanted to share my opinion. I played em both quite alot and knew they would most likely both pass their groups. However etty looked really solid and played better under pressure so I personally was more impressed with that from a "underdog" prespective.

It's good to see your opinion, as you played them and attended the event with them you have good foundations to draw up one :D
