Adults generally need to rely on a job to survive and have a bit of financial stability, yes I love cooller but he's not been on top form for ages, attending a comp where he might not even win any prize money might make the journey a bit of a burden, so in an ideal world we'd all love to play games and earn some $$$$$$$ but it doesn't happen any more because of real world commitments.


He'll always be the most entertaining quaker to watch at any comp and I'm hoping to see him in future events, be it online or offline.

His form looks pretty good and even if he wouldn't end up in top 4, he is guaranteed to win at least some money due to donations. I understand if he doesn't want to go but it' weird he announced it just 3 days before Dreamhack.

How does this visa work in Russia? How long does it take to get a visa? Do you need it to leave the country for a trip or only for work? ETC, ETC.......

It can take anywhere between a month to 6 months to get a visa (if you even will get one).
There are no deadlines for employees of that kind, though they tend to give you some just for you to hope for something. Cuz that's all you will have after you've sent your application.

I'm a cooller fanboy, but I never really believed he'd actually go.
And even without him, strenx and pavel, we still (hopefully) have

rapha, cypher, tox, fazz, fraze, ph4ntom, k1llsen, av3k, dahang, evil etc etc etc

While this surely is a disappointment, let's be realistic here; the lineup is still very impressive, we have Facey crew for coverage, those who go have the Campgrounds arena - all in all this is not JUST another LAN, it still has the makings to be a classic.

I'll play negative nancy now in order to have one realistic opinion on the site.

Back in the good old QL days tox, fazz, fraze and phantom weren't considered to be a part of a very solid lineup. On a second note, some of the contenders for DHW 2013 haven't taken the game seriously for quite a while, so the names aren't as big as they used to be. Finally, most of the listed names regularly attend events so it isn't an event that they are attending.

Yes it still is impressive, but for those three reasons it won't be "the best ever" by any means not in quake (quake4 was awesome on this regard) not in QL alone. I'd say it won't be a classic, like IEMs, some previous quakecons and DHs and whatnot, in which more top players attended, all of them really wanted to win and the event itself was bigger, more important and more produced, and with better casters too (sorry but it's true). Just compare how the LAN scene was in 2010 and how it is in 2013.

The sad thing is the responsible ones for this are the very players.....again just like in all DHs. It wouldn't matter much if it was something sporadic, but the same happens in all DHs and is disrespectful to the staff to the point this was the reason why quake wasn't in DH:S 2013.

So far it's 6 'dodgers' out of 32: that's not professional and reliable at all. Considering that, then the upcoming low viewership numbers and that blaze is leaving the team, I wouldn't be surprised if quake is dropped once again.

Although whats the reason behind cooller not going? work? visa issue? and I agree, what looked like a promising top 8 is turning out to be another rapha cypher evil clash towards the end stages (and maybe dahang). I can't see any others making a huge dent into those 4 on LAN. As for the semi-pro guys going, I seriously doubt any of them will make any huge upsets. besides sting/matrox I dont really see anyone upsetting others... especially since most pros are LAN proven veterans, where as online results are relatively fluky among all top pros (mostly because they're irrelevant).

As much as we all like those two, in the "good old QL days" fazz and tox struggled to get out of group stages and their potential was at most quarters, because there were more big names showing up. Now they are #1 contenders, even after they dropped the game for quite a while. That says a lot.

There's plenty of new people in ESR since 2012, for some reason, but the fact you weren't here doesn't mean quake was healthier before you joined and that events were miles better, and more important to win as well.

I never said or assumed any of the things you are saying. All I said by mentioning those names was that back in those days, it was much harder for EVEN the likes of those guys to get top 5 (Keep in mind, those names contain far more talent and individual LAN experience than the majority of these online heroes today), so there is nothing to get excited over in this line up especially considering pavel/poni-probably the player that could upset a pro/strenx/cooller have all been replaced.

Yes new talent exists, but it needs time to grow. you mention strenx, how long did it take strenx to reach the very highest level? a fuck ton of LAN experience. Yeah fraze came over and did well ONLINE and beat a rusty cypher... but on LAN? much harder. as for the South Africans, by the level of play they showed on stream, I'd guess top 16 at best, which would mean getting out of group play.

But what I did assume that cypher/rapha/evil will show up in top form and when they show up this way, they'll bring their championship level of play. you mention spartie, they are far more consistent than spartie, whos been in 3 lan finals, yet hasn't won a single one compared to evil whos been on 3 major ql lans and made 2 finals... and rapha/cypher speak for themselves. As for dahang, qcon 2012 finals said enough. unless he can get his nerves together, at the end of the day it doesn't matter who he faces in the finals (if he gets there), but of all the top 3-whatever#, I'd say dahang is the most promising.

Yep I'm quite newschool with quake but QC2011 and the old IEM vods I've watched just a different level of professionalism.
Casting,production many top players in their top form completely different as in better.It's hard to compare now and then.
As for the players indeed they are dropping out but I also think it's time new talents would rise and people would kinda look to idolize them instead of the just the old 4 (rapha,av3k,cypher,cooller)

It's 6 so far, around 19% drop rate that blaze himself has to deal with. Out of those there were quite big names, replaced with very much average players (sorry). That doesn't happen in other games and sports.

The days that are going to be remembered are the 2010 ones, not the two 2013 lans that didn't have a brilliant sign up list compared to previous years.

Other games and sports don't have such small prize pools. Compare the dota2 tournament just this weekend. Its prize pool ended up being well over $130,000. Or what about the CS:GO 250k tournament that was(i think?) crowd-funded.

I don't think he's been on form enough lately to make it profitable to attend and considering cooller's chances at actually placing high enough to win enough money for it to matter to him being not as great as they used to be, compared to others that are attending, I don't blame him. I'm not a massive cooller fan, anyway, but still would have liked to see him attend.

Sure, he could attend for 'glory,' but for goodness sake, he has already attained quake glory and then some, so, it would seem that it's just not that important to him(which is fine, imo).

I also wonder whether a re-draw with new seedings is in order now. After all, cooller was a top seed, so simply replacing him with some semi-active player like madix or some low seed like mojo would basically ruin the purpose of the seedings.

On the other hand, a re-draw might frustrate those players, who have put some effort into preparing for their groupstage opponenents. It would also make redundant all the groupstage analysis and hype we've had the last days.

I think it's a tough call and I hope that blaze finds a solution which is acceptable for everyone.

Do not bother applying if your not intent on going, only reason someone should pull out of a competition of this size is for family reasons imo. That is now two players with quite a large following in the community, the hype built around these players coming alone is pretty substantial and its sad to see that they pull out of a major competition for these reasons.

Both players have sponsorship's from large companies/teams and its unfortunate and a bit stressful for event organizers now to try and replace them with obviously someone of lesser skill.

I am sure DHW will be just as good because its also about going and seeing and meeting new friends too. but still a shame for the viewers who can not go. Guess I am glad I am a fan of Dahang, Rapha, Killsen and Fazz.Should be good games to watch :)

Great player, and not trying to flame, but after what we've seen at the last DH with his retirement after being stomped by rapha, i think he came into a pretty weak mindset, therefore i dont see him being able to pass that rapha-Cypher-DahanG-evil wall. More like a psycological matter than a skill matter.

hah, we have totally different conclusion from same fact. imo the fact he retired, and didnt touch quake at all, concentrating on different things in his life, may affect him the same way it affected cooller.

av3k is no pro gamer anymore, hes just a guy whos really good at game he likes. and because of it, he wont exactly care anymore about result so hes more likely to play his aggro/retard/genious gamestyle against rapha, which always was a problem.

His partecipation was uncertain from the beginning, unlike the ones of other players.
It's already much he's still playing, he's older than the average of the pros, he's married and he has a work.
We all knew that this could have happened, he never gave his partecipation as a sure thing, and he even specified the exact day he would have know it.
Only a blind couldn't have seen that coming from a mile.
His partecipation was just a question of mere percentages, and not good ones.

You can't really call him a dodger or unfair for this.
He could have said from the beginning he wouldn't have gone, but instead he choosed to try all that was possible, to leave a small opening for hope.
His message just reflect this.

Dropping out 3 days before tournament is bullshit. We have the groups already. And guy who could take his place not from sweden can simply not be able to make travel preparations.

He said long time ago that he will know for sure if he can go just a few days before dh. Not like he lied.

It was about visa problem, now we have a job problem. I think this is a bit different cases. He knew DH schedule and could manage his work schedule with employer for this. If he thought to manage this at last 3 days before the tournament this is not saying anything good about him.

being a Cooller fanboy this is greatly disapointing, I was reaaaaally looking forward to his participation...

I hope we see him in the next LAN event, and I believe we will. He seems to have the Zero4 "you never leave a hobby" approach so that's all good.
