And you know - to share some dough - Zenimax would have to see "future" in Quake franchise. Current game is in 1999 in terms of game design of FPS games. Quake would have to "adapt" to current standards. I'm not talking about iron sights, but some things had to be added/subtracted/modified for post Q3A generation of players. Not sure if Quake community would allow any form of evolution of Quake :S

Ragdoll physics could be added easily, HD textures and skins are already out there along with cooler GFX (as used in some fragmovies).

Sure but they can't just take whatever they want and include it in QL. Not for free anyway. (like how they contracted arQon to get what you link to) That doesn't mean there aren't some things they can take though. Likewise, skeletal animations aren't impossible. There even is partial md4 support in Q3A's GPL source code release.

q3mme guys allowed fx scripts and they can look really good, pretty sure that any q3 mod could make 2 or 3 fx styles for each weapon and make it available choices for the players just like cg_altlighting or cg_railstyle or whatever the cmds are... (in qw u can choose projectile for rockets for example)

They could just release Q4 with Q4max and they wouldn't have to do anything except make a modern installer/updater. It's a good game patched and it has almost modern graphics on high settings.

They could charge people for hue/skin changes or for the single player. Or they could just invest $0 into it, let the community do a better job of running it themselves, and just throw in ads into the main menu where they can't be adblocked like they were QL.

I seriously hope they can market this well enough if it happens. Might be the wrong thread for this but I listed some some random ideas that I think would be good to have from day 1 that would immensely help the game succeed.

- Good clan support

- Easy to watch and share replays and demos

- Matchmaking for ranked games

I think a good matchmaking is especially important because the barrier of entry for TDM and CTF games is waaaay too high in QL. If you want casuals to join and actually play these game modes you need to make it easy, they're not going to join IRC for pickups. Also, going to empty server hoping to get duel, waiting for 15min for someone to come and then get your ass handed to you 20-0 is a good way to make newbies quit. Matchmaking would also fix that, to some extent.

- Ladders viewable from the client (duel, Clan 4v4 TDM, solo 4v4 TDM for example?)

- Normal servers for unranked games (like QL has now)

- Built in tournaments of some sort? Maybe weekly or monthly?

- Not too many game modes to keep the community from splitting too much.

- Not too many maps, or at least keep the ranked map pool clear of shitty maps (QL has way too many maps most of which are quite frankly crap, same goes for game modes)

- Get rid of the very old maps where old Q3/QL players would crush everyone. (ztn/dm13 etc. I know you love them, deal with it) Thing is if you want to attract new competition, you have to make the starting level as equal as possible. Admittedly Q3/QL players will probably have a massive advantage even if they make a completely new map pool from scratch.

- A good (voice guided?) tutorial to the basics of quake. I feel this is very important for new players. (item timing, strafe jumping and rocket jumping for example) QL has okay'ish tutorials already but I feel they could be so much more.

This ended up quite long but none of these ideas are especially difficult to implement except maybe the tournaments.

QL uses the same announcer as Q3. Both are Xian Antkow, our lead sound guy.

The QL announcing doesn't sound the same as in q3, although it may be the same guy. Sounds much better in q3, maybe make it an option to use QL or Q3 announcer.

There is a large amount of VO used in Quake Live that never existed in Quake 3, primarily due to the new gametypes and the introduce of round-based play. The entire reason we had the VO re-recorded was because using the old Q3 sounds wasn't a viable option.

And again, given that it is the same guy, using a similar voice and filters, there isn't a really compelling reason to even provide an option like that. If we make announcer voices optional, I'd want an entirely different styles available (female announcer, etc).

the only QL voice you need to change is the quad pickup... make it more like the q3 voice, but even more muffled and ethereal

It just needs to be presented as something positive (Hey, did you know you can make this game look any way you want, random coddah?), not as something difficult and cryptic.
Until this day, I dont understand why theres no interactive config generator on ql website, or why the cfg guide is hidden somewhere in submenus and contains only a few pictures.
Furthermore, whats the logic behind your suggestion? If people want to adjust the game to their likings, why not let them? Because some lazy dumbkopf cant figure shit out? If a person wont take an hour of his/her time to do this, its easy to imagine he/she wont also practice hard for months while mostly getting owned. Or do you want to take away the skill gap aswell?

In the end graphics attract the much needed new players. As we know from plenty of sources already QL isn't exactly a successful project.

Nothing wrong, except, that a new Quake game with a 1999 engine/appearance will be a complete waste of time and only ensure a pissing away of the limited resources id deals with already. It's bad enough that any new Quake game will be crippled by the fact it has to work on a console, there's basically no chance of seeing another massive leap forward that previous Quake titles are noted for.

This is unfortunately something I guess a lot of people in this community will greet with open arms, the chance to stand still and watch the game continue to decay.

There is no need to limit picmic and what not, noobs play with full gfx because they are clueless, so matchmaking solves this.

Yeah I dont see why good graphics instantly means bad gameplay. If you have the most amazing graphics (still somewhat customizable, which Quake is known for) the modern players will flock to it, no matter what the gameplay is. If you stick with the Quake gameplay, it retains all the prestige that Quake has. If you have modern graphics, Quake gameplay and modern services that a multiplayer needs (and QL doesnt have), the game could be massive.

It would literally be the new coming of arena FPS gaming, and it has been a long time in the making. IMO its a low hanging fruit and someone is going to pick it up sooner or later.

First person shooters have always pushed the boundaries for whats possible, a lot of the attraction for past Quake games has been the great leap forwards in technology. the huge fps gain was 16bit and texture FILTERING(bilinear) + resolution, vertex, sky, gibs, lod, curves maybe fast sky.

I think a "2.0" release doesn't necessarily mean a new game, even a huge patch, as it still is QL after all What it does is a marketing campaign that attracts new and old blood to the game - a 2.0 title hypes the game quite a lot -, plus some much needed additions and integrating features from GS scripts and from other community efforts.

Another aspect that I expect to be changed is the (weird) business model; doomguy with a cowboy hat, a 'harosh' taunt and a pink lg beam. Not entirely sure on this one though, but I am on what's on the first paragraph.

Players will leave with the standalone release, at least 5%, not with a game improvement that will not be much different from what it is today.

If we want quake to be bigger, graphics are important.
2 sides to this :

1. With all graphics turned on it would have to look like its a new game in term of graphics . Looks attract attention, it just is this way, can not deny this, dumb or not. If a medium pc can not get 700 fps anymore, well too bad. But it attracts more attention, and isnt this what we really want? If we dont like it, too bad, we just have to if we want bigger community.

2. Graphics customizable only by in game choices, beeing able to turn graphics down to a point where the pro`s are "satisfied" , yet the game still holds some decent graphics. Shadows etc in map goes from realtime to fixed positions, much like shadows in quake1(not too dark,doh). If its the same for everyone it doesnt matter if that "theory" states that you might be 0.000001% more efficient in quake if the graphics had been turned even more off.

I still think quake1 has the best graphics , it just looks better then quakelive. We should compare graphics when its all been turned down, there is nothing wrong with having nice surroundings to jump around in , even tho you wanna be a pro.

Now i beleive quake1 has the best graphics because of the maps and how the shadows are beeing displayed combined with the less cartoony style.

But this is my opinion as objective as i can be . Just depends on how objective the community can be and not rage because "that wasnt how I wanted it to look, because ive been playing quake for 15 years and still want it to look the same"

Just the time and effort it would take to quality control theyr work .
Also trying to force modders/students to do a specific work to a specific time is not really that easy.

Modders do great free stuff, because its on theyr own terms, they want to do it, and do it when they would like to .

Students do it because they "have to" because its "school" .

Ofcourse there are some gems out there , but finding them is not always that easy .

I guess best way would be for the modders themselves showcase some work done and send an email to id , asking if they could do some work for them, for a tiny amount of money .

I think the subscription idea is broken. I miss q3a's weapon damages. It would make more sense if they hosted servers for people with features such as allowing mods from 1.32/1.16n, allowing custom maps, providing up to date bot protection, annual graphics updates, while maintaining the community aspects that are done already. Then do some more monetizing by creating mods that encourage people to buy stuff in a store to accessorize their quake 3 experience (think team fortress 2), and create new mods/maps that are only allowed on servers that have bought them. Another farfetched idea is to create an interconnected world like a rpg.

I remember playing quake 3 with crappy graphics in order to get 125 fps. The physics cannot be beat and that is the games strongest point. If it loses that it loses its soul.

True, once you go quake physics everything else looks... I don't know how to describe, less good in every aspect.

For example, one evening i bough both portal 1 and 2 on steam, was bored, played couple of levels and was *massively* annoyed by the fact i couldn't strafe as fast as i usually can in quake trough the map. Then went on youtube to see if strafe is possible in portal, and LOLD my ass of after watching that retarded movement you need to do to gain some extra ~10% speed...

Bring back GIBS and BLOOD for newbs and spectating. Make the 'fatalities' a part of the game again in a big way. Like if you use the gaunt, it should be a punch to the throat with the buzzsaw and their head should pop off and shoot blood everywhere. This has to happen, the lack of blood in QL sucks balls. QL doesn't feel like quake because of this/

Make a training mode in duel that has a voice and arrows telling the player what he should be doing (just basic strategy-wise). Like "fight for the RA in 10 secs" and have an arrow guide them there. Or something like that.

Make a traning mode for jumps and movement in the maps that is more helpful to newbs than defrag ever was. Like maybe have paths drawn out to show the curvature of the jump or something like that. Some sort of useful feedback that would make movement easier for newbs.

I always looked at qz/ql as an experiment by id, I think they even said that early on they would learn from this project and implement it in the next quake release maybe the thought process changed when they had more people take interest than expected with server queues at the start. Maybe they saw that as quake not needing a major triple A release for success. If QL2.0 can launch and they are prepared this time to keep the initial burst of players it could work out. Loadout is a good example people are always going to be willing to try new free games the difference is the free games who can hold onto those players so the initial release of a free game is very key and QL simply was not ready. The community also needs to be prepared for QL 2.0 launch, with tournaments (for the love of god not just duel,team pick up tournaments like jehar ran with freeze give people an actual reason to form a team) and fun things for new players, and not acting like complete barbarians to someone new. I also think CA should be separated in someway possibly unranked like insta its ok to play CA but it shouldn't be the only thing you play in Quake as it a shell of Quake. So if you want the stats play the other game types.

Of course, but even though I was just messing around, I really know people who play QL and don't even have a Core 2 Duo or even reached the Dual Core 64bits from AMD during that generation I forgot the code names, anyway I think once a week I still see people saying they can't play on certain maps then they want to vote for another map hehe. Ofc the maps are not optimized (because my old i5 @3ghz - HD 5870 - 8gb DDR3 had 200-250fps sometimes) so it's not 100% on the user side. Anyway

It's because some QL code is still very CPU dependent when it should have been shifted onto the GPU.

ioquake3 did it (as did warsow very recently for a lot of their shaders), but id can't use the ioquake3 code (GPL) , and don't really have the resources to rewrite the render engine themselves unless they can arguably say it will have a positive effect on the projects income. atm it's 'good enough'

just keep the standard competitive tournament maps in the ranked duel servers for free users so that they can atleast play quake duel on the good maps they are use to and if they want to be able to spawn servers or make clans etc whatever then they can buy premium if they choose to.. but you shouldnt be basically denying people quake by putting literally ONE good competitive duel map in the free monthly pool that almost never gets put up on the map vote at the end of a game and when it does its only played once then you have to sit through a ton more shit maps forever.....

I would comeback for a doom1/doom2 revival in the form of officially releasing brutal doom with already included current engine and assets (models, etc. etc.), making it more accessible than what it is now and properly advertising the game.

No "official" servers though, just the good old everyone can upload servers, access to all official and custom content (mod support included) and 100% freedom to play once having access to the game. I don't care if it is one payment, free or freemium as long as the experience isn't limited and/or a pain in the ass.

id isn't trying to sell idtech3 so that's not valid for QL anyway.

They don't plan to pay for servers. Heck even call of duty's don't do that.

So far it's the good old the community uploads servers without needing authorization from the company, which ensures way more freedom for players, that all world locations are covered, LAN support and in the end a better user experience.

Also it's not like id pays for all server locations, with sub money. That has been discussed here before, long story short in the US that's the case but the rest not by any means, with local communities having to face huge burdens in order to be authorized to upload servers and even then pay for them.

I don't know why id went for that choice. No one does it and in the already dying Q3 there were no lack of quality servers issues.

True FPS are way too good to die, and quake is the best of the best as far as FPS games go.

If I ever became filthy rich, I'd like to buy the franchise, give it the overhaul it needs and then set up some free tourneys worldwide that would conclude in a big event in like vegas for major prize money, major enough to attract every gamer who think they are the best. Because gaming is about the competition, and the best platform for competing in video games is Quake IMO.

Who knows, maybe there is an old Q3 player out there worth a few hundred million $'s that could do something like this right now?
