because consoles rule the world of modern videogames, even crysis is consoles first, there will never be a fully fledged quake like game, maybe as a smaller type project as a downloadable title on steam with just a few mp maps, like tf2 at launch.

all valve games have tons of user maps, maybe thats why. modding is huge for longevity of a game.

there were no Tomb Raider game for 6 years, and direct prequel of TR reboot was quite shit. however Lara is one of icons of gaming, same as quake, so ppl were hyped about new TR game.

Quake definitely had a strong influence on video games and the whole industry might have been totally different today if Quake hadn't been there. But Quake itself is totally unknown to the average gamer, despite all its influence. The last popular Quake was released 14 years ago and only nerds know about it whereas even older non-rebooted franchises can be more known because they appealed to a broader audience.

Ask 100 random gamers about Quake today and if you're lucky, one of them will be aware of its existence.

obviously newschool console kids have no idea about quake, but soon they will be minority compared to middle age gamers, who obviously must have played quake at some point.

I've read long time ago results of internet survey[it was posted on polish gaming site, i doubt i could find it now, but i can try if you want] about player age, and second biggest group were ppl in between 25 and 35 years. these are the guys who surely remember quake. Considering the population is getting older, its matter of time when mid aged ppl will be the major sector of gaming industry.

secondly - games are made for ppl who can buy them, without begging parents for a new game. That means a quake game would perfectly fit the needs of soon to be the biggest client sector :-)

Ok. Let's say we have ten 30 years old and one hundred 15 years old. Forward 10 years, we have ten 40 years old, one hundred 25 years old and one hundred 10 years old. Sure, these 15s grew up and can be considered "mid aged people" but they still won't know anything about Quake. In the meantime, the ten old runners will represent an even smaller proportion of the market.

It's called demographic transition, and a few years ago I had to study this stuff academically, day and night, to properly understand the workings of these trends and not just have recitation to rely on for exams.

What you are saying is fundamentally correct, but is not applicable here.

What FlashSoul is driving at, is that, taking an extreme, fictitious example, while ALL Quake players could be 30 years old, it would not mean that all 30 year olds would be Quake players.

The gamers might be getting older, but people who remain gamers in their midlife are fewer apart, because, well, people tend to have to go to work and have kids and all that other good stuff called life.

In other words, you can have your demographic of middle aged ex-Quakers, but them having played it in their youth will not put them under obligation to keep investing precious time in such an old game, if at all into any game. Cuz life.

You will also have middle-aged CoD kiddies, who will still not have a clue what Quake is. Correlation does not equal causation (it's a logical fallacy, have a read), and them becoming 30 will not grant them some innate Quake knowledge.

On top of all of this, you will have the main demographic of gamer, the teenager, as it always has been, still playing whatever will be new at the time. And the teenager of then, will be no more interested in quake than the teenager of today.

If your quasi-theory is so solid, then why are the player numbers still declining? From being a global pastime, Quake has been reduced to just a meeting place for the oldschool diehard fans, and an incredibly minuscule fragment of the younger gamer of today looking to see what this 'Quake thing' is.

4) Effective marketing to the younger generation. Old players' hype and expectations due to nostalgia trickling down to those unfamiliar with it by word of mouth.

5) It's a Blizzard game. If you didn't know what Diablo was before D3 was to be released, the forum hype online was enough to make you buy it on the grounds that "It HAS to be good"

If you take the hype Reborn was surrounded in, call the game Quake 5 and scale the market audience to the tens of millions in stead of hundreds of thousands, you'll have yourself a Diablo 3. You will then have a game, which is a sequel, which is accessible to newcomers, the first game in the series after YEARS of waiting, which has a faithful hardcore following, and which has a self-generating publicity engine in the form of online forums.
