Have you considered creating a page somewhere with a donation button?
Do a stream once in a while or comment your demos, anything really that creates some exposure and so that people have somewhere to go to donate. If you don't get enough so what; what have you got to lose?

Also quakelive or the quakelive tournament at quakecon might not be around forever. It might be the last one any year, you never know. Time is running out. ;)

right right, but on the other hand we should be happy, that ql/q3 still stays in the game after such a long time. all the competition to other shooters was won by quakelive/quake 3 in the long run. where is this unreal tournament? where is this counter-strike? where is painkiller, doom3 or whatever? imo it's just awesome, that this beloved game still has it's place in the competitive gaming-scene. it's like an old veteran, that survived countless battles and is still alive and kickin. ;)

Absolutely, it's amazing that Quake as a franchise has survived almost 20 years and that Quake 3/Quake Live (I'm gonna call that the same game) has been played for 14 years. :)

You might have though. Because it wasn't q3 that survived, it was what the community made out of it. Specifically the OSP mod, many aspects of which are incorporated in ql, and which helped hugely in building a competitive player base. Plus the community improvements made to the core code once the game was open sourced.

Put differently, that this game survived isn't really an achievement of id Software. It's something that more or less accidentally happened to them, simply because q3 was very moddable and because they have their open source policy.

First, granted it's really bad form of QCon to insist on having these awfully late announcements for something that should be pretty easy to come out with early. But at the same time I find it peculiar how these guys who are interested in playing always seem surprised to see that there will be a Duel tournament at QuakeCon. When has there NOT been one?

I agree with you completely. QCON is like death and taxes, it will always run and it always has a duel event with a team event. Granted the information does not come out as early as some other large LAN event but lets be honest it has been around long enough for us to know that the prize purse is large for a game that is this old and well its old school you either choose to go or you do not. Save your money and train and go! Why does everything as in full details need to be announced months in advance for you to be able to know its happening and that you should go? Its not like the duel format has changed over the years!

2005 when they had Ms. Quakecon and no Open or Pro Duel tournament.
2007 when they had the Quad Damage tournament which included Quake, Quake 2, Quake 3 and Quake 4.

I kinda see why people wouldn't mindlessly buy tickets to the US and go through the hassle of getting a visa (I don't know if it's actually that problematic though) when you never really know what they decide to do with the tournaments at Quakecon.

QuakeCon announced tournament games and game types back on June 5th and FaceIT has been using the QuakeCon map pool for almost as long. The only vital piece of information that was not announced until yesterday was the prize pool. I agree that waiting so long to announce the prize pool is never a good thing, but its not like NO tournament information was provided until yesterday. Prize pool is important information, but I doubt that's what was stopping the good euros from going, considering QuakeCon tends to have a good prize pool just about every year.

A couple of things - according to the rules there'll be group stages before the double elim brackets. If this isn't a mistake then awesome. Also why no Dahang in the registered players? He is planning on attending, right?

Yes there will be a Group Stage and then a Double Elim bracket. The group stage is to provide more matches for the players, especially those who traveled far for the tournament, as well as assisting in the seeding process of the bracket stage.

That's how sponsorship works, whether getting it back by getting products advertised or directly from the player. There's no such a thing as money for free.

Getting your money back from the player is a disgusting practice.

The only reason they can get away with such practices is because most gamers are teens and still wet behind the ears. They don't care about money, they're just happy that somebody is letting them play games all day every day. Of course this will come back to kick them in the nuts later when their "gaming career" is over and they come to realize they have no degree, no money and no prospects for a proper job.

I'm really happy that FACEIT is doing the coverage yet extremely dissapointed that Jehar isn't their main caster, or at least even a guest. Still, looking forward to watching.

Jehars casting lacks a lot of in-depth analysis. He's not a top level player so in duel he lacks a lot in regards to knowledge. I found him hard to listen to solely because he just didn't "get it" when it came to why a player did something.

Neither zoot nor ddk is a top level duel player.

Not master level, but they are a lot higher level than Jehar. That however, I don't really think should matter much, because commentating and analysing isn't the same as playing. Jehar is a good commentator, even if he isn't the most knowledged commentator. Put him with someone who got the knowledge and you got a good set up.

I fucking love Jehar, put him with ZSX who is quiet and only talks when making points about control and tactics and you have a really strong combo because Jehar is one of the best color commentators ever.

Maybe, "not giving a shit" was a bit too extreme, but they certainly don't care much these days. If they really wanted to go, they could. Everyone saw this coming. Take a look at the FGC, they'd do anything to compete anywhere no matter if they win or not. Many Quakers only go if they can win and gain profit from the prize money.

I deliberately didn't list players like Dem0n in the list. He is imo a player who still wants to compete, even though it's not at all sure if he will be #1. He wants to go to QC, but sadly he cannot. We need more skilled players with that mindset more than we need sponsors!

Well, it's a risk - what if he comes jetlagged and doesn't win? Just like rapha losing early in the Faceit Season Finale - do you think that's rapha's full skill? So I understand fully why he wouldn't want to take a bank loan.

he doesn't speak english. his performance is highly dependable on whether he had a good night sleep or not (or had a hot chocolate or cocoa). sometimes he doesn't think at all when playing. he can give five or ten frags easily and then lose with even bigger score difference when trying to fix that. he can say "fuck it i'm going to sleep" and actually go to hotel no matter what is expected of him.

but all that makes spectating even more fun, and i will definitely root for him.

So then. Will anyone else go who would be able to translate for him? Like when ordering a meal or something? Or communicate with game organizers? Don't want to imply anything, but if he doesn't understand any English he could even easily be cheated out of a win.

That's why I wouldn't advise evil to go, except if it was only for the mere fun and inhaling the atmosphere. Other qcons already but this in particular looks to me like the "investors" wanting to spray some moisture on that dusty, dwindling plant that is the north-american quake scene. They sure would prefer an american hero in the end. But at least somebody halfway marketable.

back in the days, when q3 was big and all, us scene were training new (by then) map hub3aeroq3, while in EU and Russia the map remained pretty unknown. then came qcon04. somehow, someway, nobody knows how did that happen, but hub3aero was continuously selected to play against lexer and cooller (magic cointoss or mapseed, or maybe american cosmic rays), and guess what happened? russian guys kicked some ass at first, on maps other than aero, but suddenly they started to receive ONLY aero against american players and SUDDENLY they've had to fight each other.. The only two Russian players among tons of americans had to fight each other. TWICE!!!! By a random coincidence, of course. MAGIC!

Fox was MAGICALLY removed from the tourney too. MAGICAL MAGIC!

After all these years qcon orgs still trying to perform some copperfield tricks, but they clearly fail again and again.
Fellow orgs, pray explain, how come the only two Russian players had clash in both winners and losers brackets, and how come the mindless point-and-click hub3aeroq3 was "randomly" chosen against cooller TWICE in a row in the most important moments?
keep in mind that cooller was steamrolling every other player on any other map than hub by the time he reached the finals.

hub3aeroq3 was played at ESWC in 2004 which was an event before Quakecon (1 month before quakecon). Hub3aeroq3 was well known across the globe for quake3 (example the swedes knew it well). It should also be noted that at ESWC zero4 didn't even know hub3aeroq3. He had to get tips off czm on how to play the hub3aeroq3.

Cooller's had previously played hub3aeroq3 against other players in the ESWC tournament. He's lack of preparation was his own problem (just like zero4). He didn't really steam roll everyone either, he had relatively close games against Toxic and daler (he won those by about 6 frags or so).

Quakecon brackets were done via FFA's back then. Pretty sure Lexer qualified second then as well which didn't help. Can't remember how cooller qualified.

I guess if you were to say anything, the month between ESWC and Quakecon, zero4 learnt hub better than cooller?

First of all americans KNEW that Russians didn't bother with hub, due to it's stupidity and purely arcade "asteroids" action (back then q3 was more about strats and tactics), and SUDDENLY orgs changed rules from toss-pick procedure to a very "honest" random pick.

hub was "randomly" picked only 4 times in the entire tourney, 3 of which against Russian players in the most important games closer to the finals (and the tourney had pretty huge amount of games with lots of participants, and I mean A FUCKING LOT of games at that.)

Yes, everyone considered jibo a Russian player by then, no matter his red flag. When he gets to the most important game (to playoff or gtfo) he gets hub. When cooller gets to the final rounds he gets hub. When cooller gets to fight for the 2nd place he gets hub again.

OFC it was a honest randomization... yeah... Lexer was there - to travel half the world just to fight his buddy? twice? yeah... thats some international lan for ya...
cooller was winning all his games (no matter if u call it steamrolling or close games) and murkans knew pretty clearly - they cannot allow those russians to win big every time they get to Qcon.

also - qcon orgs changed the mappool a few days before the event, bringing hub3aeroq3 into action PURELY UNINTENTIONALLY, ofc. They knew exactly that nobody among russian quakers played hub back then, and they HONESTLY (but prettty suddenly, nonetheless) changing rules to random pick and bringing hub into mappool a FEW DAYS BEFORE THE EVENT.

Not entirely true. The map list was changed a day after they had released it. The original map list didn't even have ztn and had pro-q3tourney2 (lol).

The only thing that was changed was that the weapon respawns went back to their original timings compared to what was originally put in the rules (15seconds vs 5 seconds).

hub - 5 seconds
dm6 - 15 seconds
pro-t4 - 15 seconds

hub was always in the map list and had been played in a previous competition.

the original maplist:

There was never a rule for a toss-pick process for picking maps. It was only that they would mutually agree to removing a map each prior to the dice roll. (read they have to mutually agree) Other wise they went with whatever the dice roll is. So if one player didn't agree to having any map dropped then no maps were dropped from the dice roll.

Reality is that the maps were pulled out of a hat, written on pieces of paper and some random person picked them out in front of the players.

Cooller lost to Zero4 in that winner bracket semi on aeroq3 but not by a lot. Considering zero4 didn't know aeroq3 one month prior at ESWC, they were heading into the game with what would most likely be considered the same knowledge of the map. That put him into the losers bracket. CZM just finished off what was a cooller with a bruised ego having lost to an arch rival.

There is no conspiracy, take your Russian glasses off. The only thing I agree with you on was the Fox scenario because Fox was running late he got forfeited out. That's up to the admin's discretion so he got forfeited out of the top bracket. Pretty sure he was getting food and they decided to kick him out after he had already been waiting ages. He then decided he didn't want to play because he didn't think he'd make top3. I think that's what happened.

Lexer was also lucky to even get in the competition, he was lucky someone else gave him their spot. He shouldn't have been in the competition in the first place. Lexer almost lost to chaoticz too! (remember the comeback?).

Good times. Anyway, done and dusted. Quake lans now are nothing like they use to be unfortunately!

Expected delayment. I guess it's more profitable to bet how late this tournament will be announced the next time, rather than headlessly going now to the US for... fun.

Sponsors want to have proper facts and also preparation as the attendees demand it, especially when the gaming community is rather small. If you base your decision on thin air, it would be waste of money for a sponsor to send someone there, prepare and pay the player so that he represents his brand. If the event is getting more audience, more people will be able to recognize his brand and the more people will be able to relate this brand to properties of what the public image goal is. The higher this factor is, the more a sponsor is willing to send someone somewhere.

Granted is that we as outsiders do not know how hard it is for you to raise the prize money or on what factors you base your decision to finally schedule a tournament.

You could have had a few more players attending the event, if it was announced earlier. Not only to increase the amount of pro-players, but also of casual-players and also the spectators to look something forward to.

The more people are experienced with the history of this particular game series and its events, but also with e-Sports in general, the more you will see people being disappointed. The public image of your company, well.... I believe you know what you are doing, if you are doing this like this. Not everything is bad. But there are a whole lot of things which have been criticized by others, based on facts.

Of course gaming is just for fun and not a career choice. Because of that, you should reconsider such announcements betimes. So that enough pocket money could be saved. The same amount of money that is needed for players, who do not live nearby of this event location, to pay the expenses (voyage, accomodation, aliments, visa....) for a relatively short noticed announcement could be spent somewhere else. I do not need to say other investments with this amount of money could be better than staying at a gaming convention..... but let's just focus on the location.

This event is held in Dallas, Texas, USA. What else could international tourists do also over there? I bet you have more ideas of places of interests than we do. Tourism. Visit the QuakeCon. Visit Dallas! See something else than the computer screen... Let's check out if there is another reason to visit Dallas... Maybe this video shows it?



Seems like a lot is going on over there. Dallas really seems like a nice place to visit, not only for the QuakeCon or a Quake Live tournament (with prizes).

Apart from the money aspect, it is not easy to get a few days free for everyone.

The bottom line is that more would have loved to be there, especially for this tournament, even if they wouldn't have had the chance to win something big. Even without some big prize, some sponsors could be willing to invest money just to promote their brand over there. Currently a lot of people from the world are excluded.

I hope, that the late announcement is not intended.

I wish all cup participants good luck, that you feel comfortable with the environment and enjoy the game. I wish that the organizers don't have too much stress and that everything will be going smooth. I wish that we spectators can receive the things we plead for. I hope that this QuakeCon will be better than the previous ones.

The "damage bug" isn't a bug. He triggered the anticheat several times. Customer Support then banned him. I'm not sure what I could do to step in. I have no reason to doubt the anticheat or overrule Customer Support, looks like everything they did was proper. Zerious feel free to email me and I'll give you a nice lengthy explanation of everything as I know it. But this thread certainly isn't the place.

If he's a cheater: fuck him. If he isn't: help him at least by pointing to the correct people (and yes: I know) .

What would you do if you are at the end of your tether? Also I am not here in the position of a league admin, where it is my duty to handle the trouble tickets, take care about the users and listen to them. You can not listen to everyone in detail, since the amount of trouble tickets is high. I have some experience in that in the past, and I know that this task is not appreciated properly. We admins do this voluntarily. Actually this applies to almost anything in e-Sports. I remember a few guidelines how to react to such a category of incident from the admin pov, in order not to damage the public image of the (league-) organisation represented.

But I am here in the position of a player and a paying customer. Therefore I am naturally trying to represent my position. Therefore I am annoyed and the more time passes by, the less I am here willing to accept silence over negotiating over protesting.

It is understandable to try and justify yourself if you are wrongly accused. We also don't know the functionality of Quake Live's anti-cheat system and if false-positives are possible. But if I was banned for no reason with the addition of being ignored by id software I'd probably just figure out how to make a new account somehow rather than waste time writing out walls of text xD

I find it hard to believe that you're innocent. Anti-cheat systems are designed to detect anomalies. False positives are few and far between and seeing as you are the "rarity", I doubt it's a mistake.

But I am. Maybe my system was corrupted somehow, thus something has accessed the memory without my knowledge and that toggled the anti-cheat system. Pure speculation.

Therefore I cleaned my system up, checked all I could and provided something for them to work with. I understand that this is a rare case. But especially because of that I tried to support them, that when something similar happens to another user, they know what is causing this ... 'damage output bug' or anti-cheat-system defensive behaviour.

I could create a new account, but then again I refuse to accept that.

At the moment even bypassing that ban would be a cause for yet another ban. I am unable to do anything now.

winz is originally a duel player, I don't know much about his current skills but he could be top 2 FR easily, I suppose.

with the same amount of ql-duels played than strenx, he probably would be the best french dueller.

Timelimit is one of the reasons I stopped playing duel yes. I dislike current timelimit and dislike the overall map pool.

Perhaps I would have considered competing in duel again if we were given an entirely new map pool for duel because I'm way too lazy and not motivated enough to practice each current map a thousand times to catch up with the others. =P

Bottom line is, now I mostly play for fun and I just have more fun playing with friends than alone so unlike before, team modes are my preference now.

i know what you mean, because as aerowalk went into the standard map pool, i (a standard-1200elo-duelnoob) played my very first match on it against a subscriber-1800elo-tierslummer that had already 500+ games on that map.
it was totally demotivating, because it felt like playing against wh and i instantly disliked the map.

I agree on the map comment. I think the scene is finally pushing for people playing the new maps and finally putting maps like ztn, hub, dm13, etc to rest.

As much as I like Quake, playing someone who has 10,000 duels on just Blood Run is pretty discouraging when you're going in with 700. Impossible ground to cover. New maps, however, at least we're both learning the intricacies at the same time. Sure, the 10,000+ duels opponent will have a huge edge but meh, at least they don't know the map blindfolded yet.

It would be nice to have Jehar as part of the broadcast in some way. He might not be the highest level QL duel expert (FaceIt guys are doing a great job atm) , but no-one knows their Quake / ID games - history - community like Jehar. He brings a sense of occasion and community to the cast. It seems perfect that he cast the Doom event and -or general coverage of the event.
I watched his last KOTH event on TastySpleenTV, and he said he had not been approached to do anything official at the event, which is kind of sad.

Yes it is a loss not having Cypher since he is so strongly associated with Qcon, but at this point were lucky that he is still playing at all. The main thing is that Evil is going, he is the most dominant player right now. There are gaps in the lineup, but considering where the game is right now, its a pretty good lan.

In CA your positioning is based on ones health/armor, team mates and terrain/exit routes. There by missing the most important aspect of what makes watching a good player fun, doing all of the above with the correct weapons (sharing is caring) with respect to the resources available on the map to control i.e. weapon/item pickups and then moving toward power-ups in team-games. You're looking forward to Rapha playing? I'm hoping they do the right thing and change it to TDM or CTF on the day. With the late tournament / prize-money announcement they might as well make a late change to a good game-type too.

In all seriousness though, CA will probably yield closer competition among a wider group of teams than TDM/CTF, so it's probably a good thing in some strange way.
