Thx for the links, first time I see a doom3 duel tournament. What happened with doom3 in the end? Was the competitive scene big at any point?

i guess at that time the hardware to run doom3 properly was too expensive
for me it was a amd64 3000+ & geforce gt5600, cant even run Quake4 properly with a single core cpu

now days, like Quake4 u can run much more frames ... but doom3 mp is not smooth enough for the pro's

Well, be aware of the fact that due to the lack of success of past team cups they could have as well not hold a team tournament at all.
I think it's alright to have CA, a few of the newbs on ql.com might be watching it and eventually find more interest in competetive play.

do you understand that CA is way more boring to watch than ctf. If they wanted spectator entertainment ctf was the best choice. People who play CA play it anyway, watching CA is not going to bring anyone new.

On a different note, I understand that for you who wanted to go there and play this is a major bummer but for me as a spectator it does not really give or take anything.

If they didn't want to do TDM or CTF, then Domination would have been a better choice than CA. At least people would have been interested to see how top teams approach it and whether it's suited to competitive play. The novelty interest alone would have been good.

CTF would not provide an exciting tournament.
NA comp scene consists of one pug channel. That's it. Everyone knows everybody.
Even then , there is one team that doesn't even need to play (ROOF) that can re-assemble overnight and win everything without dropping one match. Eu teams have little to no incentive to travel for CTF only, and they have failed to win anyway.

TDM is even less active in NA. There isn't one comp team. And it would be insane these days for TDM eu team to travel as well.

That leaves us with CA... that is actually
1. pretty active
2. teams can be assembled overnight
3. Have rather small gaps on top, which WILL provide interesting bracket.

I think the addition of CA is a good choice - that means there's some sort of focus on one main gametype (duel), doom 2 is there for nostalgia wanking and CA is there for laymen just enjoying the event. I guess everyone can hop in and enjoy a few rounds of CA on quakecon, beginners and veterans alike. TDM would fail - given the fact that Qcon is roughly ~1 month away, teams don't have the time to prepare and organize themselves for a trip to the states.

CTF could be a viable choice but I'm not sure who's actually playing it in US.

As for CA, it's probably the most populated, popular and easy to get into gametype. Even a tier 2 player can do some damage and help the team out.

I don't really care as long as Duel is taken care of accordingly.

I agree with this. duel as the main tournament, and ca as some kind of fun tournament.
As much as I want ctf or tdm, it's just not viable (in the US).

The reasons behind adding CA aren't valid in practice.
1.- The announcement is late (as always) precisely because of quakecon's organization.
2.- In the event the lan and tournament areas are separated and sign ups are before quakecon. Fun, non official tournaments are played at the lan area and lan area people cannot sign up to the official tournaments.
3.- CA players aren't as committed to the game as duel, ctf and tdm players. That means there will be tons of no shows and online heroes not appearing.
4.- We all know ca is laughable (ca is not quake) and that its addition steals the little spotlight and prize money real quake had at quakecon, which are the incentives the players we want to watch had to attend (no cooller) and we will see even less quake in screen than previous years (if that's even possible).
5.- ca is even more boring to watch than shootmania.


I know it's another negative nancy post and all that, but we have all watched that all streamed quakecons have been awful, both because of decisions made before the event and how those ideas were implemented. It's a disaster waiting to happen, by people that commit the same mistakes every single year and somehow keep their jobs.

Anyway, this will the last negative post on this thread, that isn't a reply to what I posted. Next one will we some girl posing, in order to save the thread (and stop ponies).

Consider this:
- At any point in time, over half of the players in game in QL are playing CA.
- TDM gets like 100 games a day, if even that many.
- Obviously, CA is 100x more popular in terms of player count, game count and whatnot. In fact, any other mode gets owned by CA in any statistic you can imagine.
- And yet, Faceit's CA cups aren't even more popular than TDM!

Really, 2v2 CAs have similar amount of signups to 2v2 TDM. 4v4 was removed in May, but in April 4v4 TDM had _twice_ the signups of 4v4 CA.

I'm not saying TDM is any better (it also has shit signup numbers, dropouts in CB/HoQ, empty LANs), but it's dead, right? Meanwhile CA has no excuse with its popularity!

No need to make another thread for this, I'm just wondering what's ESR's official QuakeCon expectation / Wishlist

After a short debate on chat, I figured we can collect various opinions on what people actually expect from this year's quakecon event. Based on previous tournaments, all I'm hoping for is:

PLEASE id/qcon/whoever, PLEASE PLEASE test your streams before the match starts. Do a dry run, try your equipment out, make sure everything is working.

I'm not sure how important stream is for you guys but for everyone who isn't actually there at the event, any major lag or stream downtime or overly lengthy delays completely ruin the viewing experience.

Collect demos, it's not that fucking hard to force players to use autoaction 3. It baffles me that this still isn't a standard.

Try to create a schedule without huge breaks in between, I know we can expect delays but watching a spinning logo for the whole day isn't as fun as it sounds.


Other stuff that I'd like to see:

Get some quality casters
Don't let Todd Hollenshead talk too much

You do realize last year there stream machines were alienware x51s which are not so good pcs to stream an entire event, not even 1 good pc (X51) was capable of doing all that work so maybe they should improve on what mistakes they did last year. maybe this.year well see the auroras again as stream pcs

Seriously guys, how many good TDM or CTF teams from EU will manage to sort out travel and visa issues in just one months time to acutally go to QuakeCon if they would do a TDM or CTF tournament? I would bet 2 or maybe 3 (best case). How many good TDM or CTF teams are there in the US? I sincerely don't know, but I'm guessing also not more than 4-6 and even then not all of them would go there. So what would we be left with in case of TDM or CTF at QC13? Ye 1-2 serious teams and another 2-3 mix-teams, that's just not exciting. While CA is laughable and not serious at all it still might actually bring 10+ teams in so we would have some stuff to watch and laugh.

Only gametype I care for in Quake is Duel. So I don't care for any other tournament at QC except for it, they could shut the whole thing down and instead hold a 16 player invite tourney at id's office for all I care.

It would have to be a source port at least, DOOM2's got a lot of famous Multiplayer WADs so there really shouldn't be much of a problem

fo, ca is great in certain conditions, just moronic trends/stereotypes call it fun only, dumb, online, shoot-while-high mode . u just need:
- good players/teams
- the best teamsize depending on map (2v2 wont work on quarantine or overkill that well, 4v4 will be shit on hellsgate)
good ca play requires alot of brain and coordination, ya nabs. team play is crucial, even more than in tdm, because there are no items, only coordination in having good position and shooting at the same time. the 'when to be aggressive' motto applies more in ca than in any other mode. and finally, not having items, ca is the most fighting skill-demanding mode

if only you'd left it at ca takes coordination. but no you hadto go and compare it to to tdm.

Try to attract people with an approachable gametype rather than watching dull 20 minute rape on TDM.

It is even less approachable for viewing than TDM.

There are people who watch CS and don't fall asleep.

For people who have ever played and watched Quake, it's obviously impossible to watch, but if the goal is to promote QL to "tactical FPS" players or other kinds of non-gamers, then why not?

I'm not sure that non-players won't fall asleep watching either CA or CS. And for CS players who can appreciate "tactical FPS", QL is like a toy with unrealistic weapons and maps, so they will dismiss it.

CA is great for the players themselves, not so much for the spectator. I can totally get why leaving TDM and CTF, regardless of which mode, both tend to have a single team thats far stronger than any other. Its just not very exciting aside from the finals. (inb4 copy pasting results, yeye i get it, but im still right)

Just hope it will pull plenty of duellers still, wouldnt want the spectators tourney to suffer.

Doom II mp is also great! We played a shitload of it back then! I even remember we had a local lan tourney in my home town with lots of people attending. We finished 1-2 with my friend. Great times and i am talking about 1995-96.

You realize that QuakeCon is far more than some QL LAN tournaments? First it is a community-driven LAN with 5k people attending (compare it to NorthCon here in Germany), second it's a platform for id (and now Bethesda/ZeniMax) to show off their upcoming games and "technologies" (that's the only reason why they actually support QC with money and shit), third it is also kind of a small gaming convention where other studios and brands present their products.

If anything big will happen to QC in the next years it's them (id) dropping financial support for the tournaments thus eliminating competitive QL from it once and forever. They definitely won't move the event to EU that's absolutely pointless for them.

CA is like fun when none of the players really care. CA for money? It will be like endless rocket/grenade/plasma doorway spam, than +back peak railing. Prepare for 40min rounds. I dont know who made this decision but clearly didnt played CA or just havent thought this trough properly...

With no information about prizemoney and only 2 months left until QCON, it's highly unlikely that any actual European teams would be able to participate.

The only thing that changed is: Instead of raging about a pointless TDM/CTF tournament (because of the Europeans' unability to attend), people are raging about a pointless CA tournament (because of the Europeans' lack of interest to attend and the viewers' disinterest in the gametype).

i love ctf and tdm, but the tourneys for them at qcon are much too small nowadays. i would much rather see a lan for them done in europe instead at qcon. hopefully faceit or another org comes through and organizes one.

That team would get raped. I believe a so called " pro" team will win especially if k1llsen goes and plays on a team. It won't be the most viewer friendly qcon but CA is by far the most active game type in QL and always has been the players that do play it deserve a lan tournament to compete at. Will have A LOT more signups then the past few years.

I have mixed feelings regarding the introduction of a CA tournament replacing CTF/TDM.

The only positive aspect of this I can think of is that it -might- attract new players to QL; you can't deny that CA is the simplest and most popular team-mode in Quake and if it manages to attract new players to the game it's going to be a great decision by ID.

Then again TDM has always been, at least in my eyes, the true essence of Quake, even more than duel.
I can't speak for CTF (don't really enjoy it but I respect it) but, by removing the TDM tournament I feel like ID is betraying the very core of quake fans, those who have been playing it for so long and thanks to whom the game is still fairly active these days.

My personal opinion is that there is no thing such as "competitive" CA: at the highest level the outcome is determined by either randomness (random rocket bounces from random players in small areas)-if both teams decide to meet in the same spot (BRIDGE!1)- or just who peek rails better/has more patience.
Also, I've heard the format is going to be 3v3 which means it's going to be a LG tournament with teamplay.
CA can be very challenging to play and is often wrongly ridiculed but TDM/CTF are just on another level.

How do you figure this? i know you added a "might" in there for safety :). I can understand how CA might be considered a gateway game mode in terms of easy entry into the game for new players. But I fail to see how a CA tournament will attract new players. First off how many new players do you think will even watch qcon? I mean the logic seems to be that people have watched previous qcons and that ctf/tdm was too complicated for them to try the game out yes? Cant think of accurate numbers right now but I really doubt the number of viewers for qcon was that high. And I suspect most of them were already quake players.

At some point you have to accept that quake live in its current form is not going to attract that many new players period. It's an old game and there's nothing fundamentally new and it wasn't marketed very well when it came out in the first place. I wish we'd all stop living in this dream world where simple little decisions like what mode to use in a tournament will magically draw thousands of new gamers.

ps: Personally I dislike this decision mostly because I would've gone if it was ctf. This is very subjective. I also dislike it because I think CA will be boring as fuck to watch. (Just clearing up my reasoning). I still wish everyone who is in fact going the best of times. I'm sure this will be the one and only time CA only players get to have a LAN with money on the line.

To answer your question properly, i didn't figure anything out: it was a train of thoughts where i was trying to understand the possible reasons behind this decision. That has to be, imo, the only possible explanation and that's why i added the "might", not being my decision to choose ca over something else.

if i had to rationalize this choice, i'd say that we tend to forget it's not the q3 era anymore, when gaming was still a bit uncommon and obscure hobby: many people (myself included) started to play through words of mouth, irl friends and so on. I think the most important thing QL would benefit from the 2013 internet is publicity in the gaming crowd, in any shape or form.
The problem within the game has always been the steep learning curve, which is massively flattened in CA: by giving the latter more tournaments and prizes, thus luring more people in, you get a statistically bigger playerbase and thus a bigger chance to attract even more players, who might then choose harder modes,in the same way dota2 gained many LOL players who were bored of the simpler mechanics.
It's something it's never going to happen in duel or TDM/CTF, where a new player would have to train hard for years before even standing a chance to win a few hundred dollars.
I think every single new player counts as two potential new players and even more nowadays

Shootmania is a joke and a bad comparison, i dont even want to waste words about it: the only positive thing they've introduced so far is that mode with weapons and armors pickups, but it was too little and too late; a good feature can't change a bad game.
This can't be said about quake, no matter how many bad decisions ID has made, it's still not too late.

at the end i feel you're probably right, picking a mode over another might not alter the fate of the game itself but it has to be said this is somewhat the best (and only) pseudo-marketing move by ID in years.

Truth is CA is way more popular then TDM, CTF, Duel ect. It's that simple. It's not going to be fun to watch but there will be a lot more signups this year. If you don't like it you don't have to play or watch.

I hope there are more signups. Because otherwise this whole exercise wouldve been pointless. At the same time I'm not optimistic that people will pay money to go to Texas just because its CA.

I did there was enough wine to fill a vineyard. The gametype for this year is CA get over it ... it's done. CTF had it's time and so did TDM the only major gametype that hasn't was CA until now.

FaceIT should announce their first LAN scheduled at the same time as QCon so at least in EU we will have something decent to watch. Last year's QCon coverage was the worst yet, I hate to think how lame it will be this year. Announcing CA as the team mode seems to suggest they want to outdo themselves in the lame stakes this year.

As I said above, Domination would have been a better option if you're gonna drop TDM or CTF since that would have some really interesting novelty value. And I've yet to see how teams of top players from other modes would approach Domination in a competitive environment. Would be interesting to see.

Instin won't go. There was a very condemning video posted a while back, enough to be considered proof. He was banned for cheating, but used the relative/friend/roommate excuse, which was enough to be unbanned it seems. If he did play on LAN, expect his skill to be dramatically lacking compared to online.

Thought bentley has been to LANs, unless I'm completely confusing him for another player? Anyway, his spotlight as a potential cheater was wrought by one pondfiller, whom was banned without question for hacking, and the lolCA video showed nothing really suspicious.

I don't think any of them hack. Just a lot of people within the community seem to do. They all are among the top tier of CA players in NA. I don't see why any of them wouldn't want to go. SisemeN turning down a chance to play along side Mr qcon himself (zer04) and kgb after winning the last two CA tournaments as br1ck pointed out. I don't get it. demex has been the best or at the very least top 3 among CA players in NA since QL came out. He's been playing with rapha and cl0ck who will place into the money either way. iNstiN haven't seen him on it awhile but like demex one of the top 2-3 players in CA since day 1.

First, I'll say outright that top tier CA in NA means nothing. Second, nemesis and instin are cheaters. They were cheating when I played, so it's likely they still cheat. Once a cheater, always a cheater.

Glad demex and nemesis went and didn't disappoint. Both played great for their teams.

Really? I didn't watch any of the matches aside from the duel highlights, but I heard nemesis and kgb were suspiciously lacking.

From what I saw kgb was like always. Nemesis played well I thought and hit some huge shots for his team. He didn't match his online acc's but this was his first LAN. demex was lights out most of the games 40-45lg really was the back bone for his team. Would have liked to seen some of the other top NA players attend and players like k1llsen, v1um and tox would have been great. There was a feeling with CA that any of the top 4 teams could have won on any given day the games where that close. Unlike in the past with CTF you knew EG was going to win or with TDM the euros where going to win. A lot more signups this year would have been nice if the payouts where more but all in all I didn't mind watching the CA games the casting was great.
