Yes it is, but this one carries a far higher risk because if you mess it up you will hit the ledge and fall into the lava, its not like the plasma climb on ZTN where failure is virtually unpunished, you lose silly health and frags on this map and you lose positioning off the spawn aswell which take take several minutes to re balance and even cost you games due to the lowered time limit of ten minutes. Its a big deal to give anything away on this map.

I have played quake in the past fairly extensively and the only reason I no longer do so is because its ultimately played out for me and many others, as quake 3 did not evolve, in fact, its gone backwards as a game.

The game and map in question was made in 1999, just because it got ported over to a web browser in 2008 and given a new name, does not mean the knowledge I have is somehow no valid.

Jeezus this thread. Shit was ingenious and worked. Look at his situation -- no weaps but a GL and what better, less noisy way to get to RL quickly and surprisingly. NOT a random match, NOT random players --- far, far from it.

To be honest it all came down to him hitting a massive fullface rocket from a relatively long distance which would likely not happen most of the time. It's fair to assume (especially me remembering the game as of now) I wouldve probably killed him in that situation and won another frag on a particularly dominant position (centermap/above).

I think the fact that he got there so quick surprised me at the time but that only really worked out great because of that (lets not be afraid to say it) lucky rocket :D.

Then again it's awesome because it looks great and would fit in a quake movie and everything but I have to back jamerio on this one to be honest. In 90% of the cases there I'd have raped the sh** out of him in that situation wether he had a rocket or not. Choosing to keep your current stack and go for the safe route and get yourself some shards and bubbles and a shotgun is probably the smartest move in pretty much any situation...

I've admitted above it was a good move and its return was beneficial to you gaining a significant advantage and winning you the control back. I've applauded it, but don't start beeing too cocky because you've suddenly been at the top for two consecutive sunday cups in a row. Well to be fair I'm partially wrong. What I meant is the move suddenly became extremely good from the moment that rocket killed me.

I hadn't watched the video from this post yet and was talking from what I had in memory. Obviously what I said in my first post doesn't make sense from baksteen pov. But then again if I just had came a second faster to center or chose the YA route which he can't predict, that move could've been nullified if not punished.

My main point remains though that this move isn't a risk you should take when it's an important game. Just look at these brilliant young football players that are showing all kinds of amazing tricks all over the pitch that makes it entertainful to watch but it is hardly every necessary and will most likely endup with nothing in the end.

Watch C. Ronaldo and the way he has changed his game in the recent years as opposed to when he was much younger. Well it's less pleasant to watch yet look at his statistics. Same goes for a ton of other players (Im thinking currently of Eden Hazard who I've been watching for the past 5 years now regularly, the guy does significantly less trickery and is now more decisive).

Now I know some people are gonna facepalm at another sport comparison. Could also use a poker parallel. It's nice and all to gamble and take huge risks. The benefits are worth the risk if you play at an amateur level wanting to have fun. Too much of a risk to actually be worth trying against semi-decent players. There is almost no actual reason to do this outside of showing off and it'd rarely actually work.

Though in this case baksteen won the map against demon because of the baksteen jump. It saved him like 10 seconds, which was positioning on the rocket launcher.

He won because of the 3 hp mg and the lucky direct rocket. I mean he probably would have won anyway but the jump isn't why. In fact if he didn't get a lucky rocket he probably would have taken a rocket on his way to YA

Fact is he did hit it, getting a frag and control of the map out of nowhere. Even if he were to just get the RL and escape it would have ended much better than crying on the weaker side of the map with just a shotgun.

I agree it is risky and all that, especially now that people know baksteen=baksteen jump so no surprise factor or opponent's mistakes, but when it works it's epic.

The same was said about rocket jumps. Positioning and speed matter a lot and are worth taking the damage and risk.

"The baksteen jump" is a high risk high reward move, therefore shouldn't be used all the time. And since you didn't disagree I think you understand this was the crucial moment of the match that made baksteen win and not just some silly stunt.

"got lucky" = unexpected. Also this is the second time he "gets lucky" as it's the second video posted with the very same move (3+ counting q3).

Yes, it secured him the lead, but it was luck. He didn't win because he did the jump at the right moment, in fact I'd said if there's ever a time to actually do the jump this wasn't it, he won because he got a lucky rocket. Just as you -could- hit 4 lucky directs on someone that is fully stacked while you're 100-50, but that doesn't mean rushing in with rockets trying to do just that is a good idea.

It wasn't intentional and it certainly wasn't planned, it was a fade away rocket that happened to hit. Luck can happen anywhere and any time, it happening here doesn't make what he did a good idea.

Is this grenade jump useful? Yes.

Is this grenade jump a good tactic? No.

When he says useful, it is in the sense that you accomplish reaching the higher level or the RL. That is not saying to do it all the time because as a tactic you are obviously at a disadvantage whenever you attempt it. Ultimately, it's for show and not for play.

It's the equivalent of a rocket jump with 1 rocket left. I've seen people do rjs to RL with 1 rocket left many times, so this grenade jump can be useful.

GL jump is (as long as you don't fail it) better than a RJ in EVERY CASE because you don't need to switch weapons or move your mouse away from where you want to aim

Baksteen would have died in every other circumstance but the one happened in that match: also, the direct rocket could have even been dodged, so it's more a "fault" from the other; or this shot could be named, more properly, "baksteeen direct rocket", that wouldn't have worked with every other stronger player, and has not even been made during the jump, so to have a rocket charged in the air was totally irrelevant; also, he could have only dropped, if he even managed to survive, it would have been only a stacked-weak hunt, and guess who would have died.
By the way, baksteen clearly didn't won the map due to that suicide move he did; he played surprisingly well during the others 10 minutes, but that gimmick could have seriously mada him lost.
