Just going to point out the dota2 season had a 1.6m prize pool whereas lol had 5m, with players earning a lot more than dota players overall (individual stream revenue, more events and with bigger prize pools, etc.).

I don't see this dying anytime soon; in the past that happened because the whole competitive scene was in charge of fans. In those 2 games there's that plus the aid of the game's developer directly, something that id software never got (quakecon isn't as they never organized it nor put prize money since the intel/ventrilo/etc sponsorship).
They finally realized a great way to keep people playing, therefore spending money, is making it like sports are in real life, all aspects included.

Also I remember some guy won 1m dollars doing the first perfect game in mlb201X, which should be the highest grossing gaming prize ever (1m to him not 200,000).

yeah i agree, but its not comparable imo. a mistake in sc is supposed to cost u the game, in dota u are supposed to have a chance to claw urself back.

mobas are successful because they are the first "esport" game genre that can really have a true competitive and a true casual scene running side by side.

yes this is the key reason I feel. MMOFPS never quite had that.

What I find most fascinating isn't just the size of the prize pools now, but its the innovation of firms like valve that come and push the boundaries in many ways, through steam, thorough endorsing and this is mainly down to the personality of Gabe Newell.

And the biggest surprise is that I've known about ...watched and played competitive games for close to 15 years, and the amount of times I've seen people getting excited about pro gaming becoming a reality and it never did to the extent of a true sport, but yet it does keep coming back again and again, maybe its always to be more of a niche size sports market rather then a global one.
