This is sad news for QL, but really, id software has proven us many times that for people who work there, failure is result that they have rightfully deserved (except Carmack, but he's stuck there only due to historical reasons).
I have big hopes for Reborn and have zero care for whatever happens next with anything related to id software's games.

I don't really see the problem, one has to pay for all kind of enjoyments so why should Quake Live be an exception?
- pay for sports club
- pay for cable tv
- pay for a night out with your friends
etc.
Considering how many hours people spend each month on Quake Live, I think 1.99� is a very fair price. Maybe it's too cheap, maybe if id would ask 10� people would valuate it more. :x

many ppl have already mentioned it

my guess is they know it, but they can�t fix it, since the only programmers they have on the project are hobbyists and not professionals and it won�t fix by simple changing a var. I am afraid, in the end they might even call it a feature :(

edit: I just send a support enquire. I know I am mocking them a lot lately, after the update :(. I hope they will make me eat my words. It�s one of the rare cases that I would love to be wrong.

the funny thing is that at the moment (I am sure will change in the future) everybody is behaving very nice towards this (letting the first in the cue play), because they can feel each others pain with the new map voting system and they are sympathetic. I mean every time I lose a game and there is someone in the cue w8ing, I can imagine him saying �what the fuck is this shit?� That makes me spec (if they r not fast enough to leave the server) and if I could, I would even pat them in the back saying �go on man, play, I can feel ur frustration, we r all on this�

Due to the decreasing number of participants and decreasing interest in Quake Live competitive-wise

as much as i respect zotac for hosting all the cups, i dont see how thats true
the ql cup has always had around 80 sign-ups which is way more than trackmania
after all that id's done / iem dropping quake i do understand their decision

Theres still hope in Mother Russia:).

There's a daily cup on 125fps.com. The rules being - every day monday to friday RUR 125 are being duelled out (small dough, but it doesn't matter), as well as some kind of "points". In the end of every month the best 8 or 12 duellers are forwarded to the monthly finals, where they fight for RUR 3000 (USD 100 approx) for the first place. Other places go like this:
2nd=RUR 500
3rd=375
4th=250
5=6=125

Also - Russians participated in Zotacs for, like, the whole lifespan of it, playing on remote EU servers with ridiculously high ping at times, but no one complained. So if u wanna induce some fucking life into Quake LIVE (LIVE, I said) - then don't make up excuses and FIGHT!
Trying to kick Agent's ass on Ukranian server is a highly rewarding phenomenon by itself, no matter the conditions, in times when darkness fell upon QL.

- Maybe another data is more important: viewer numbers. Participants are nice to see for those who are sponsoring the cups, but in the end it's more work for the admins. The sponsors probably will prefer a game, which has a lot of viewers (those who bring in the money) in a good relation to participants (out of them one will win the prize).

Other ideas are welcome imo :)

nah. Mobas developers (lol, dota2, hon) do it properly.

While it's clear people are overreacting over the last update (mostly kids that still don't know what money is), it's also easy to tell syncerror and his team have been on vacations for the last...13 years.

Also this is the third time sync says he is going to save a tournament (wcg and eswc). I don't believe a word he says.

how about the LevelUp TV guys run their own ZOTAC-styled cups now? They've been covering it for a while and I'm sure they are capable of hosting the tournament in addition to streaming. and if they wanted, they could hire some admins to help out so Zoot doesn't have the task of streaming and making sure the matches are played on time etc. I'm sure tons of people would help out

It would be good for players but I watch zotac for players like agent pavel cypher poni guard ect and without that 100e prize I doubt they would continue and I doubt level up can put up 100e every week. So if the weekly cup became about casual players alot of people wouldn't bother watching.

I would do/try this, but I have nowhere near enough time and/or influence to actually go through with it.

But... what if someone like LVLup/2GD/etc. tried to fund this from the players/fanbase? Meaning it would run off of donations.

Use something like Kickstarter (or run a paypal donation system over it's own cup website) where people can donate towards the next cup (or for a month in advance, etc...), where a good chunk or even all of the donations go directly into the prize pool.

So if for one week/month there were a big amount of donations, there would also be a bigger prize money. Or cap the prize money at a certain point and keep the over-the-top-donations for the following weeks/months.

If you have 100 people who donate 4 Euros a month, then...

MAKE IT HAPPEN :D

I think, would be better to make a project on kickstarter with a goal to collect money for a longer period -- like 6 months or 1 year. It would be much easier for people to donate 1-2 times in year, instead of weekly donations.

by the way, THEY collected $4400 for the upcomming quakecon. this amount could cover almost a year of weekly competitions with $100 prize.

Just someone should take responsibility for that.

I mean giving $1 dollar a week, so $4 a month to watch the game you love and be entertained doesn't seem like much at all. It's like deciding to give up 1 meal during the entire month to do so.

it doesnt matter if its true or not. its only a sentence from them to say goodbye. they cant write "we dont do it anymore because quakelive lost its appel and all saying quakelive is dead". nobody tells openly the reason or the marketing strategy. its absolutley okay to write "something". its BS to search a deeper truth behind a say-goodbye text.

Well good for Zotac they had a pretty good run. I was always a bit confused as to why they were sposoring it tho. Don't they sell high end gfx cards? Not really a market for that in quake. If anyone is trying to set up sponsors for a new cup, surely Razer, Steelseries, or Qpad or someone would be a better bet, at least they sell something that the Quake crowd would buy...

With whatever the live/vod viewer numbers are and the participants each week, surely one of those companies could afford 100 Euros pocket change per week for the exposure..?

This is a huge bummer. I kind of missed the Q3 boat back in the day (and really really regret it), and I think I could have been a great player. I love watching the weekly Zotac tournaments. They make me want to still try to improve my game and get to a semi-competitive level, even though I'm 30 years old, married, kids, career, etc. Haha, I'm only around 1400 elo (so noob trash, really), but it's fun. I even did that youtube series for a while on analyzing and improving my duel games. Sigh, it's getting tough to stay enthusiastic about Quake.....I'm not done yet though. We still have people like Memento_Mori. Other than that, let's hope 2GD comes through with Reborn! Haha.

Not only they play, but they have 150-200 signups each week in the Zotac Cup. Quake gets around 80 on average? I wonder how the viewer numbers look, but I imagine similar comparison, otherwise they wouldn't be canceling this.

iirc a full 128-grid was only reached 2 or 3 times, so the record is prolly 130-140 players?

So WC3 Zotac Cup today has 184 sign-ups and 146 check-ins.

QL has never seen those numbers and we struggle to meet them even for the last cup ever. So who is playing those 5000 duels daily? Seems strange to me...

Maybe it's time for a 2v2 CA cup or something? Maybe those people would compete?

Now that I think of it, we are able to rack up 150+ sign ups easily. (despite some australians and americans signing up, there are still at least 120/130 EU players on the list)

Why hasn't anyone considered doing this before?
I knew I had no chance to get into the second round, let alone win.
I participated because I like competing in quake and I would expect my fellow duelling brethren would do the same.

I've been asking players on IRC and my friendlist if they wanted to join so we can get those 100+ numbers rolling and make zotac more exiting and beginner friendly.
Pretty much everyone replies with stupid remarks such "lol, why would I join if I can't win, what if I get strenx in the first round?" - "I'm a CTF player, I only duel for fun" and similar bullshit.

Well there you have it.
Now everyone is butthurt and crying and complaining, how could they drop our previous online cup?

I for one blame the community in this case. If no one wants to play and standard 60 players signup with no signs of new players, this is the expected result.

A lesson learned is a lesson earned.
Let's see how this affects the general QL public.

As much as I love Q and duel, yes, this game looks like it's loosing battle. :( I believe after QuakeCon someone will put the last nail in coffin. Also big organizers will dump Q because there is no money in it anymore. We can only hope for Q5 and Reborn to change something.

I had the exact same thought... ~600 users online on ESR (not sure if this is just people logged in, cause then there would be a lot more)..

So many people online all the time on ESR. So few players playing competitive.. There are also a bunch of more casual players on the QL Forums to populate servers. Seems like there is so much potential for active public servers, tournaments, LAN events and so on. People are just lazy, or rather just want to watch the pros play.

The cup went great, there was like 50 pro subscribers that all spawned servers and offered invitations to anyone. There was more supply than demand.

They made a clear distinction with this update: free for casual play and premium for competetive. Zotac and other tournaments are certainly competetive so It's logical that playing it should be impossible without premium now.

you can see so clearly when cypher is using wmo ( right now ) and when he's using abyssus. his aim seems so much better and suddenly everything becomes easy for him to hit.

cypher staying with wmo -> easy win at quakecon. too bad it took him 3 and countless titles to go back to the mouse he is unstoppable with.

the jitter is not the problem.

it's just less comftirable then the wmo by far. cypher aim with wmo is atleast 2 times better and thats a big factor when playing vs top players.

cypher used to outaim everyone in q3, in ql he was mostly have "moments" of crazy skills/flick rails/shaft but thats about it. overall he wasn't as consistent as he used to be aim-wise.

cypher just made his life easy today with his aim. again too bad it's 2 years late :)

there is no way he used abyssus in that tournament. even if he said he does i'll say he dosen't just by watching his games. i'm not saying he was lieing but just changed his mind or something.

I dont think i'm the only one who saw the difference in his aim. just compare his mouse movement now which is more fluent and smooth to his mouse movement in zotac 143 for example which was much more "mechanical".

What matters is what he will use in quakecon. hopefully for him it will be wmo or else i can see him having a very tough time vs av3k and rapha as usual.

Once again - BIG THANK YOU to ZOTAC and all of the players that signed up to make a wonderful spectacle and a nice afternoon! Amazing games, amazing will to play and just pure fun! Thank you for the casting zoot, you and all of the other casters on lvlup has made these cups memorable and kept me wanting to play quake even more!

A big _)_ however for strenx. It's a bit of a shame that the top player in the Hall of Fame did not even show up for the last tournament to pay respect and wave goodbye to a cup that unquestionably was making his Sundays a wonderful time as well. That more or less goes for everyone else that could not attend and was a must at the cup.

They really should reconsider stopping quakelive zotac cups now. I mean 270 players on a sunny sunday in the middle of the summer.

Had they made us react like that in october there would have been too many people to handle in this tournament. I think we've learned another lesson as quakers and we should play MOAR of these cups, if zotac ever gives us another chance...

I didn't see any of it but from the comments I've read it was arguably one of the best zotacs; well you guys know now how to make it great: everyone must signup !
