I know there are all sorts of ways that Reborn could disappoint, but right now I have a giant boner for 2GD and his vision and the fact that he fucking GETS IT and is also in a position to make things happen.

The only thing that was a bit shocking to me was how strongly he reacted when asked about single player. I'm not sure why single player is such a bad thing or perhaps they just don't have the resources to do it right. Yet even simple single player like QL's movement maps or bot play goes a long way to teach basics to newbies and works better than them just jumping straight into online play for some. I do think if multiplayer is done well enough you don't need it however.

Another point is if they are going for a mod/community development partnership where good content can be added to their store and sold, not having single player support for the future is missing out on something people will develop and play/buy.

that requires making a sort of decent AI and quake3-like sp mode, and both aren't easy to do. To me in this case SP is just wasting resources, which is different than tutorials (in-game and videos) and training maps.

I just hope they make it so it can be added in the future. I do agree there are various forms of single player. I hope at least stuff like trick maps and races get added.

I think he confirmed that he'd like to have a Defrag mod.

No singleplayer will be there. It's very lucrative and it requires diffrent mechanics, it makes no sense to put out the effort. Especially against steep competition whose actual objective is singleplayer.

Newman asked about bots and he said they will have bots. In fact, they have them now. It was said about 2:47:30ish.

I'm pretty sure that by 'single player' he meant a full storyline mode. As wormed said, he confirmed bots, and I also don't think he ruled out things like training maps.

2GD stressed a few times that he wants to start with the things that are necessary to a great esports game, and do those things as well as possible -- polishing everything to the level of a 'AAA' game, but saving money by keeping a tight focus and not doing anything they can't afford to do well.

Also, even just from a marketing perspective he had a point. If you throw in mediocre single-player, even as bonus on top of an awesome multiplayer game, half of the reviews will focus unduly on the singleplayer, and mark the game down because of it.

Yeah that's true. I guess at this point it sort of is semantics. Maybe the game will require an internet connection and always connect to internet servers but if you have a defrag type option and bot play you should be able to essentially play solo.

I would hope they leave open the option to develop "single player" type maps down the road which involve shooting enemies. Just look at a game like Geometry Wars, very simple graphics but the gameplay is there. You could just have basic shapes which represent different enemy types which already fits into the Tron-ish feel he described. It wouldn't require story or great graphics but the gameplay would be intact. I just think it's naturally complimentary which adds a lot to a multiplayer FPS to have some form of single player. Q3 single player was just bot challenges, if Reborn will have bots why wouldn't something like this be possible? Just seems like relatively low hanging fruit to me and something which will appeal greatly to new players.

Bots will be good enough, he had a good point that the second you put an SP element to the game, the "don't-get-it" sites like PC Gamer and Kotaku take it as a traditional game (Where the focus should be all on SP), and naturally probably give it a shit review. If I was making a game like Reborn, I rather not be mentioned on Kotaku at all because they don't understand e-sports, and it would just be looked down upon by those casuals who read that site.

As long as he has bots, that should be enough. I'm still shocked to see how many people like to play against bots in games, I don't get the hype.

I'd just like to see the option for it to be there for the future. It doesn't have to be done at release. They don't even need to develop it, let the community do it and sell it the same way they are thinking of selling maps, etc.

From memory, I might be missing some stuff:

They have a dedicated, very experienced, awesome anonymous coder working on the game who will work on it exclusively.

Free to play is undecided so far, they will judge the suitability of this later.

Still huge focus on making the movement feel good. However they are going to put huge emphasis on creating synergy between the weapons (which are undecided) and the movement. This means it might take a while until they have a movement system solidified.

There was talk about Defrag and having some level of customisation that could allow Defraggers to add elements to make it more enjoyable.

The idea was thrown around that, if CS:GO flops, the engine will have enough flexibility that they wouldn't be adverse to modding something like that in for the CS community

The obvious stuff to make the game as modern and up to date as far as anti-lag and general experience is a given, they want it to be as smooth as possible.

Anti-cheat already a big consideration

2gd wants something like "level design coordinators" in the form of experienced quakers/mappers who can help mappers create maps that will make for good gameplay

I think he said this is still up in the air. From memory:

They haven't worked out whether they will sell the game as an upfront purchase or make it free-to-play (or do both, with some sort of pre-order/early access thing). If it does have a pricetag, Steam takes a big cut, but it might be worth getting on there a while after release. That way 2GD could take 100% of the sales from the keen early adopters, then capitalise on Steam's mass market reach.

(This last point sounds like a good idea to me. Tying the game to Steam would suck nuts for everyone involved, but throwing it on to the store 6 months after release and having a big sale every now and then would probably get a whole bunch of impulse purchases.)

Oh and also, I know you mentioned the engine, but to add to that. It's not UDK, which 2GD looked at early on and sees as a good engine to work with in many ways. But he couldn't get the right feel in UDK, input didn't feel snappy enough, and I think he implied it's sort of bloated with unnecessary (to him) things. Also, I can't remember the exact conversation, but I think he pretty much confirmed that it's not an id engine either.

it's not udk as they said before, it's not idtech3 as that's written in c afaik. that combined with what you've written about adopting a cs style mod it's most likely the cs:go engine :p

I would be surprised if they supported Linux tbh, because it's so easy to cheat on it, and if the game is a success that will be a problem. I know quake works on linux but it's not that popular...

Then again Valve plans to have their games on linux, how are they gonna do an anticheat? You can hide anything you want from a process, and you have access to the network, (most) graphics, and input drivers...

i play qw/q3/q4/ql/rtcw/et on linux and have no idea what you are talking about :S up until now, that was never an argument for anything afaik.

Agree. But there's not many people playing those games. Also one could say that the people playing them is less likely to want to cheat on top of that. If the game is successful and there's 100,000 people playing it, people are gonna do anything to cheat and get up in the ladder.

What does it matter what system the client is running on? Anti-cheat should for the most part be done serverside...

I know. That's because nobody has ever done a modern anti-cheat for linux.

Punkbuster is limited to your process but that's pretty shitty, we don't want an anticheat as useless as that.

If you look at Blizzard's warden, they look at other processes to find suspicious activities, they also try to detect hooks.

You can't do any of this in linux since you can set the game user to not see other user's processes, also the hacker has access to the source code of Xorg, the graphic drivers, network drivers, mouse drivers, keyboard drivers he can even install a kernel module and the anticheat cannot see any of this...

On windows you can list the users drivers because there's not so much process separation. You can get the signature of the drivers for example... but not in linux.

I am bit concerned that no professional game/interaction designers are involved. Players/users are not designers no matter how good they are(no disrespect to fox / fazz).

Well the big time companies like EA has hordes of professional designers, analysts and so on. Look how clueless those developers actually are regarding how to make a good multiplayer fps.

You seem to confuse the goal EA has with its games. They make games to make money only.

Example: They completely redesigned battlefield to make it more appealing to cod players.
Did they completely a**f**k the old battlefield crowd? Yes.
Did they make more money?Yes, alot.

It was fully intentional and by design.

Making competitive games, games requires large amount of testing which takes time.

Look at blizzards process with SC2, long term testing of balance with a rather large amount of players of all levels while also finetuning details that matters for the high levelplayers after release.

Most companies cant do this because the risks are too large(time=money) and there is easier low hanging fruit to grab making it wasteful.

But Im sure you know this already. Im feeling trolled after writing this....

Yes of course their goal is nothing but to make money, but that in it self does not convince me that they are actually competent.

They go for trends, cheap tricks and eye candy. I think they have actually fooled them selves into believing that shit like that makes a 'good' game, and why wouldn't they? "Hell look how much money we are earning. The gamers must love our crap!"

My belief is that the newer generations of gamers simply doesn't know what good multiplayer gameplay is anymore. They grew up with CoD, Gears of War and shit like that, while we grew up with Quake 1-3, Counter Strike, Starcraft. Games that have been played for over a decade for a reason which is their great gameplay.

If we in theory pretended like EA would not care about money but in stead just wanted to make the best online shooter possible for us, then I think they would fail horrible at their attempt at Reborn. I do not think they are in touch with the community and their money oriented ways of thinking have tainted their abilities to make games like this anymore. EA and almost every other developer out there.

only thing worse then sc2 on the market is probably diablo3. also made by blizzard. another part of old blizz legacy ruined.

everything blizz did with their last 2 games, specially with sc2, every decision they made (in and out of the game, regarding the whole scene, etc) was made to monetize on brood war. sc2 is flawed by design, the balance patches in sc2 are progressing from bad to worse. if the game wasn't called starcraft y'all would probably be shitting on it with everything you got.

That's not what the SC2 professionals are saying, so where exactly do you have it from?

Although State of the Game and Inside the Game always debate every patch put out by Blizzard and often criticize, it is always with the intend of bringing the community's and professionals point of view to Blizzard. The professionals are happy with the balancing of the game and how it has turned out. They do have much stuff they would like to change but the overall common opinion is very positive.

Hoping for a Linux client. If they are going to have a Mac client then it would just be lazy to not have a Linux one. Quake has always had Linux ports, don't alienate your target audience...

don't think even 2gd can make another shooter based on arena concept popular. so yeah, imo, it will fail. not gameplay wise, but popularity wise, and we already have ql which is a decent game and probably reaching out to max amount of interested people. think this is the reality for all arena shooters.
