Event: DHS'12

The first day of DreamHack Summer 2012 is starting tomorrow, 05:00 CDT, 16 June 2012 with the group stage of the duel tournament.

More information can be found in the ESR DreamHack Summer 2012 Coverage post. There's also a tournament website with the groups and brackets.

Unfortunately

pitch and

xeron are unable to make it to DreamHack. They've been replaced by

killerfisk and last winters DreamHack admin

empish who's now going to play instead.

Because of personal issues

k1llsen won't be able to make it to DreamHack. He will be replaced by

calipt.

av3k won't be able to make it, missed his flight because of a traffic accident where he got stuck on the way to the airport.

guard won't be able to make it either, for unknown reasons. He will be replaced by

cixxar and av3k will be replaced by

cooke.

12:00 - maybe 1, maybe 2...depends on if english cast is DaHang vs a1r-r41d cos russian stream should have Evil vs twister

rest of the times i guess just 1 game per time slot...most of the matches suck anyways~ its the downside of having 8 groups when theres only around 8 players worth watching

Already found some time to set-up some sort of smb-folder where players (are obligated to) paste their configs & HUD's? =)

You can always pull a rule out of your ass where it says they have to do this because admins have to scan for suspicious cvar's if players refuse to do so D:

It'd have been much easier to organize if it wasn't for shitmania stealing players and some known swedish players not attending due to....excuses.

What's left anyway. TDM's been ruled out, I don't have high hopes on ctf, 1v1 16 players is the usual and that's it. Maybe nations tdm?

I won't. I do like duel I just think it loses a bit of its appeal when its on EVERY week. I used to enjoy the mystery of not knowing who would do well at the big events, or the styles they would even play. Now we know pretty much exactly what to expect .

I also think team games build community and a lasting game not duel. But duel is the easiest to watch and the best to showcase the game, perhaps the pinnacle one might say.

I don't know the full ins and outs, but according to my 'data', he stopped playing q3 somewhere in 2005, and shortly reappeared on the radar in 2008, where he played on ASUS Spring as 'luc1fer'.

As for QuakeLive, until -let's say- a year, he mostly played tdm (last year he played at DreamHack). I remember looking at his profile every now and again, and noticing how bad he was doing in duel, knowing what he's capable of. I might be wrong, but that seems to have changed in the months after dh, when he started to focus more on duel, and taking part in some ZOTAC cups.

a ton of russian players (especially younger ones) stopped playing after WCG stopped carrying Q3. Q3 qualifiers in russia were extremely attractive as a platform to get out of russia and compete with other top players. without this incentive, there wasn't much. c58 Asus tourneys also stopped happening for a while.

i should iterate, another major contributor to decline of Q3 is the death of TDM. a lot of players got good by bootcamping in teams, getting team sponsorships, and so on. it leveled the playing field and provided a stepping stone for an unknown to shine. now, death of TDM is just another symptom, but it's a much worse one that might seem, it's absence is a huge contributor to seeing same players from 8 years ago.

The players (who no-showed to go and play shootmania) sold out quake and dreamhack, a game that has supported many of them for 5+ years.

Quake Live's charm isn't only the game itself, but also that every person involved has a unique personality and features (commentators, particularly 2gd, played a big part on that). It truly is a show of its own that you can watch even without liking the game that much.

Problem is most of the cast left, including announcers (2gd, joe, wheat, slasher, etc) and its stars (cooller, strenx, stermy, tox and like 20 more). That's why the event's been boring for everyone (at least on irc), but most importantly it has less than 2000 viewers including all 4 quake only streams (it usually is a bit higher than 5k).

The game's the same, players with winning chances attended (or can't walk across the river), tournament prizes are superb (better than LoL, dota2, bf3, sf4, sfxt, blc and everything else besides hon's biggest event yet and sc2), there's nothing else to watch on TV or other games if you are into fps gaming (shitmania has 50 viewers lol), etc.

I saw ~2500 viewers on DH main + ~400 on lvl^

It's only the groupstages though, predicting ~3000 on finals.

Finals won't get more than 3000 total "quakers" (more if it's a shared stream) because it's played on monday morning for most of the world

Also, events such as DH aren't meant to be for QL spectators only, there are a handful of sc2 players that could enjoy and watch QL; surely they won't tune in to watch zotac each week, but still count as viewers on bit tournaments.

Group games never had 5k viewers, well at least not in recent tournaments.
Only in the later stages of the tournament the numbers go up to this number.
If they final was tomorrow evening it would also get 5k+ I guess.

Well, fuck them too. It's their loss if they are missing the biggest QL lan because of some bullshit reason.

Those who are there are important and they are providing good entertainment so there's no need to whine about those who aren't there.

I thought the same before the event, but it's clear the event's been boring (with the excteption of 2 matches) and with far less viewers.

Lvl^tv isn't at the event but gets half the viewers of the official stream casting subpar matches from their home. That tells you something: casters do matter. They are a crucial part of the show.

also right now there should be the peak, as no non-european is going to watch matches on a monday morning, and it's a bit less than 3300 viewers including all 4 streams. That's quite bad, considering it is more or less promoted on quakelive.com and that other games are getting more viewers than usual (check twitch.tv)
