Also, it looks a little awkward, like ok i remember I used to play Doom on the PSX too and it was playable, but the PSX control has the L1 R1 buttons which were perfect to strafe. How are you supossed to strafe with that? The phone has 2 buttons on top?

A friend owned it and said you cannot map the joypad keys in emulators. Is that true?

I dont own it, so I dont really know. Maybe that is true for the original android OS. But I cant imagine that you have these restrictions with a custom rom.

I dont want one of those big ass phones. I still want to keep it decently phone-sized. The Xperia is the best choice so far imo. Looks like a normal phone and has the hidden controls. I could play some Doom and Duke with that pretty decently. But what about the power?. Someone has tried the PC ports on the Xperia? hows the fps rate going

I dont know man. Dont have it for myself. But if I would like to buy a smartphone for gaming that is not an apple product, I would buy the Xperia Play. I think the real strength of it is when you want to use emulators.

I dont have a smartphone yet, but I have an android tablet. And for emulating old nintendo/PS1 things and whatever it is very good. But only if I use a Wii controller with it. I just dont like touchpad controls.
The only game I really enjoyed playing on a pad was World of Goo. Everything else felt terrible.

Are you joking? Im on the train for near an hour daily in between gym+work and stuff. I get bored as hell, and I would totally play some Doom and Duke during those trips. It's the only time I could be arsed to play anything nowadays.

TBH I'm not sure it's worth the hassle. No matter what phone you get controls are fucked up and FPS games (even basic ones like old Doom) are barely playable.

How? If the controls on the Xperia are as responsible as the ones on the PSX/PSP, I used to play Doom and Duke on there and it was perfectly playable. Consider old school fps barely need any up/down aiming (this is why they are perfect for mobiles, they have an arcade feel to it and aren't boring as fuck like new fps)

the controls are horrible (imo), go to a shop and see for yourself. i got a lot of emulators for my phone but hardly ever play and the lack of a proper input method is to blame, it doesn't really matter if the phone is able to play the games.

Horrible in what way. It even has L and R buttons on the back like the PSX controller which is all I need to strafe and dodge imp's fireballs.

Iphone's 4s has some nice games

Better find some (good) games that are playable. If you're on android, I think that's adventures via ScummVM, Kairosoft games, things like majesty or doodlejump. Everything else sucks. These suck too, but a bit less.

However, these things are individual. For gaming I'd buy a tegra3 device like the HTC one x. Should run everything perfectly fine for two years. Even though for doom/duke3d and maybe carmageddon every dual core device with Android 2.3.x should do (Samsung galaxy S2 maybe).

Also consider I would never play more than an hour a day actual games. And the games I will play are oldschool meaning they will consume less battery than PlayStation games.

I think im getting this. Looks like the best thing if you want a phone and a gaming device in one.

Not sure about a phone, but I had doom and quake1 on my nintendo ds. Was quite sad that I ended up playing them more than any of the other games I had which were made for the ds.

Yeah I actually have a PSP with duke and doom with it. The Duke port is cool but you can't save game which sucks. Other than that the games play cool on it and the Xperia has the same controls so it will be enough. I just dont want to carry a big PSP and a phone around.

Dont get a one x, screen is curved, and loads have been recalled.. Sound also messes up.

Galaxy S3 all the way for me. perhaps the one note.. I have not tried it yet, but it in its box, waiting and calling me..

So far Xpire play looks like the best candidate. Can't beat actual console controls vs tactile.

I just need someone that has it to test some of the games I want to play and i'll buy it next month.
