in terms of gameplay? completely subjective but i think ql is superior and more fun to play( as far as vq3 anyway...cpm is a whole different story)...in every other possible aspect other than finding a game q3 is obviously in the lead

A VPN basically is an intermediary (at least that's what's interesting for QL, but there's more to it). Instead of going A->C, you'll go A->B->C and it will indeed modify the routing your packets will be given. It doesn't mean it will be better, though.

If you have access to lots of intermediary points, your chances of finding a better option increase. And if you're out of luck and everything is worse, you can still just play normally.
That said, I never used a VPN for QuakeLive nor did I even look at the pings I can get out of a VPN. I don't know if it's generally good or bad.

They can improve the priority of the packets sent as well (there are different packet types with different priorities).

I don't think it's necessary for QL or the Quake series but I know it is for some other games that are more playable with a 200-300 ping and use stupid packet types because of it.

Definitely worth a try if you have access to a server somewhere geographically between your home and the quake server and your pings are already shit. It's unlikely they will get worse IMO.

And since my ping is that bad i play nearly no ql anymore :(

He makes a good point about routing. I can no longer play on the Virginia, USA servers due to horrible ping and registration issues. Nothing registers for me at all with through rails all over the place. My ping is 70 whereas it was in the low 30s a few months ago. I get better registration and ping the same to Virginia as I do to the Texas servers now, despite Virginia being 1/3 of the distance from me than Texas is.

You might be right, but going from ping 15 to 25 should mean your in the low ping catagory still. (only counts if your a real german, you should check your family tree if your ping is higher.)

I'm not German for sure (no offense against Germans, but before I will become German hell will freeze over) I just live near Frankfurt a.M. where the Servers are located. And I also have shit internet (600kbit up) so I had 45-50 ping before the servers fucked up now I have 55-60 and that's a huge difference imo.

i'm still around a high 60s and skill 80+ still own my ass. i get fed to the wolves everynow and then.
