I would like to know peoples opinions for the following 4 phones:

iPhone 4
Samsung Galaxy S
Samsung Galaxy SII
iPhone 4s

I need a new phone pretty bad and I'm probably going to get one of these. I am wondering what would be the most worthwhile for me when it comes to bang for buck and user ability.

Price's go like this:

Samsung Galaxy > iPhone 4 8gb > Samsung Galaxy 2 > iPhone 4s 16gb

I have a macbook air and it's currently my main dev pc (plus for apple) but iTunes is not available in South Africa (minus for apple) (appstore and iCloud is available in SA)

In the deals available, the galaxy 2 gets more minutes but less data, iphone 4 gets less minutes but more data. Galaxy 1 gets minutes and data.

Don't know what the deals for the iPhone 4s as it's only being released 16th of December here and I'm waiting to hear from the stores for deals.

ability to call, SMS and an mp3 player, everything else is pointless imho, maybe if it has a very good photocamera, which i have, but havent used since i bought the thing more or less

I currently spent $12 per month with a shit phone. Spending $28 per month for a much much better phone, isn't exactly going to break my bank.

The ability to have a music player, internet and a camera on myself all the time would be very helpful.

s2 is the better phone, and is a lot more durable. also android allows u to customize ur phone, with apple forcing u to use shitty itunes for instance.

I've never bought an apple product but my next phone may well be an iPhone. the quality of the apps on the istore is much higher and more focused. android is catching up but with such a wide range of handsets consistent quality is bound to suffer. every multi-platform app seems to run better on ios. there's better and more affordable hardware elsewhere but the istore makes the decision swing in favour of ios imo.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 is really plastically and feels cheap. For the love of god, test them both and see what you prefer.

I'd go for the 4s but remember, in 6 months time there will be an iPhone 5 with a bigger screen (which is what I'm waiting for myself).

I bought an 4s a month ago and it's the best phone I've had, I don't find it limiting at all with the amount of apps (and games available) I was using android before on a htc hero but since buying an iPad ive got the apple bug.
Another of the big factors for me was the size, these smart phones arnt exactly small but the iPhone isn't too bad whilst i found the galaxy 2 stupidly big.

iPad 2 and iPhone 4s are great gaming devices too such as ravenmark (turn based strategy) infinity blade 2 (dunno) real racing 2 and the cave shoot em ups all getting played quite regularly. I know that's not why you buy a phone but they are equal to any portable gaming console and even match up to late ps2 early xbox360 titles.

I've had a Galaxy S since they came out in Canada, it's never had a problem but it's obsolete compared to the new Droid devices.

I would go with the Galaxy Nexus if you want Android.

I know people here generally lean away from apple, but I think I'm going to get the iphone 4. No one recommended the Galaxy S and the S2 is more expensive and the data plans are shit. I don't really mind about not being able to call, but I also want to use the phone as a modem for my laptop when I'm on the go.

If the dataplans were better for the S2, I probably would have gone for it, I like the idea of being able to customize the OS. At the same time, it will be cool to have all my devices sync.

I recently got a SGSII, it's brilliant in every way really. Highly customizable especially if you root it and install a custom ROM. I love android as well, much better than iOS in my experience. (I had an iPod touch 4th gen which I've now sold).

About syncing you can get apps that sync, even over wifi, no need to connect the cable to PC. Personally though I prefer dragging and dropping files. You're not forced to use iTunes to sync like with apple.

It's not really a phone, more like a pocket PC :)

No, you are right. The Galaxy is a better piece of hardware and the HTC phones are also better than the iPhone 4 and cheaper.

Everything on paper is in favour of the Galaxy over the iPhone.

But there is something with iPhones (and most Apple products) that makes you love them at the first try.

I can't say exactly what it is though, maybe it's iOS or their simplicity or their look or their weight or maybe just the hype around them.

Android is a messier and a less stable OS, because it is trying to accommodate many more form factors and configurations, while at the same time allowing more modifications. It's an Apples(c) and oranges comparison, as at the other end of the spectrum iOS is more tightly tied to the hardware device than anyone else can manage, and is restrictive.

I own a Galaxy S and it's an awesome phone, but credits due where credits due. When I use people's iPhones I'm always jealous with the app store. Android market seems bottom of the barrel in comparison. it will pick up, no doubt, but it blows. hardware wise, the galaxy s trumps the iPhone. the iPhone "desktop" is a joke. when apple makes the desktop on the iPhone like the android one, I'll probably switch. if you don't care about games and apps, galaxy s :)

If sound is important to you, the the Galaxy 1 is the one to go for. You root it and then add Supercirios - Voodoo app. This unleaches the power of the Wolfson WM8994 DAC with its (almost) audiophile sound quality. It will shit all over just about all music players portable or not!

Do you want to constantly lurk for hours on Android forums, regularly read news and articles about smartphones, aggressively participate in "iPhone vs Android" discussions, always search for some new apps to download, constantly customize, tweak, hack stuff, etc, etc? Then obviously Samsung.
If you want to live your normal life and you think that phone is just a tool that does not deserve your constant attention every day, and should just let you do your stuff without getting in your way, then iPhone.

that is a completely false portraial of reality, which even does not take in account money. For an ever so slight effort which is minuscule for people with some computer skills you get everything for free on android (I don't mean cracking, unlocking, whatever, legally) whereas you have to pay hard money on apple devices for just about anything, beginning with the phone itself for 800� ROFL

i don't own a smartphone, i have a computer for that...although i did receive a kindle fire as a gift and it's pretty cool for watching stuff when i'm pooping, other than that i use it for reading. once they all merge into one in 10 years or so i'll make an expensive purchase that i'll actually get real use out of. i thought about getting a smartphone but then i realized i'd be spending an extra $360 a year for something that i'd actually use the cool features for maybe 5 minutes a day
