The second day of the DreamHack Winter 2011 is starting Friday 25th around 04:00 CDT and will feature the TDM Group A, the first TDM playoff matches and the Duel Group Stage!

Lets hope they make all players autorecord and get all the configs (hud included) this time, and don't end up with mixed up cfg's and missing hud's..

Don't think most players would mind leaving a copy on some sort of shared folder :/? Setting up a Samba/NFS share doesn't take that long and would make it a bit easier for the admins if you ask me.

Would be nice if it was possible to alter the duel schedule so we can see more than one top v high seed game in the groupstages. Just switch some matches, should be possible somehow.

DUEL is why quake is even alive today. its why this website even exists, its why you browse these forums, if you really boil it down.

without duel, quake would have died ages ago. its names like cooller and cypher and rapha and what have you that keep the interest in this game alive.

meanwhile, people disrespect it by playing what could be the last of this games tournament's entire group stages in 3 hours, forcing everyone to view a measly 3 matches out of all the possibilities.

they forced TDM on us, not only that, but the matches are staggered for better viewing, taking even longer. now they are rushing duel.

just fuck TDM right off. let them play it online, dont bring that shit to tournaments. if you want a team game, play CS. meanwhile, hype up every duel match, make each one last. give the community a lasting impression for days/weeks/months to come.

ppl trying to split an already dwindling community. *rolls eyes.

everyone will forget about TDM results in the next 3 days.

cooller and strenx have an in game altercation pre-tournament, memes are created that will last for years to come. this is the things.

you also need to keep in mind how the tournament was planned and announced, its easy to judge now that you know how everythign turned out. and planning is always easier said then done, judge all you want but you dont even know if all duel players are already at dh today for example. the schedule is not nice, im glad you found something to blame, but in reality its not that easy.

or maybe the focus on duel is why quake is in such a bad spot nowadays? (thats not my opinion but you could very well argue for something similar). duel competitions tend to be focused on the top focused while tdm competitions usually involves a good experience for everyone. i mean q3 tdm in the early years showed what benefits focus on a team mode over a individual mode has. duel competition has been without a real competitive basis for years. always the same faces (that still brought as entertaining tournaments, no doubt.)

I do feel that commercially, quake is a duel game. TDM is excellent fun to watch - but there is no way that viewing time for duels should be sacrificed, it's just as important - if not more important - than the TDM tournament.

Having a QL LAN tournament without duel is like having a CS tournament with duel.

It doesn't matter how poor the viewercount is year after year, how devoid of new talent the game is year after year, or how bad the attitude of the players is in a community that thinks it's cool to turn up to events and play like shit due to no practice. If the people who run these tournaments insist on adding it time after time, by all means take full advantage of it. There is no point practicing for some of these players in reality, there's no threat from below, nobody will take their place.

There's never going to be any real interest in quake duel, simply because SC2 does duel a billion times better. If tournaments had never switched to this completely duel focused mindset 8 or 9 years ago, we might have had quake as the absolute top team game. Now we have quake as a game on permanent life support with no new talent interested/capable of rising to the top, because well why bother? Who'd care to be a top quake player?

no we woudlnt, because its a shit team game, CS is by far the best team game FPS. the majority of gamers realize this, thats why noone gives a fuck about quake TDM. and CS is probably the most successful pro-gaming title out there.

hmm, life support or not, its been alive as long / longer than everything else. im going to chalk this one up to ID marketing, and just failing to support their own game.

they all do practice, who cares if its just a week. this isnt something that requires physical prowess. it doesnt require hardcore training 24/7. if this was the case, then it's what players would do. but its not, because lets face it, rapha could practice 24/7 for the next year, and cooller would still take maps off of him. fact is, once you get to a certain point, getting your aim / physical extension of yourself working well in-game, thats all it takes to compete. thats not to say its easy, players who do this have been playing for over 5-10 YEARS.

tldr, im telling like it is and ppl are bitter.

They don't practice because there's too few players who even care about being good in this game. If this was a popular game that people cared about then you'd need constant practice to stay at the top. As things are they can let their skills languish, the quality of up and coming players is just so outright bad that they don't have to worry about falling behind them.

In my opinion there are two reasons for that, the style of the game doesn't appeal to people so they never even try it. Those who try it don't have fun playing against people who destroy them, there's no strong indicator of whether you're improving compared to other games. Progression systems are addictive and might keep people playing longer, then they might play long enough to become interested in competitive play.

well if a duel game is dull and boring that is sc2 for sure. there is like 10 minutes that is actually interesting out of a 45 minutes game, the rest is just garbage time / waiting etc. i thought sc2 will be an awesome duel game but its just a huge clusterfuck. and yes i played it for 6+ month getting in to mid masters as zerg, no i wasnt anything near to be good as pretty much every ex-BW player easily decimated me, still compared to other players i wasnt noob either so i know what im talking about.

You sound completely biased and naive. Duel is the reason Quake is still popping up on events in terms of organizing and as a concept. As much as I like TDM, duel is the very reason TDM is still beeing spoon fed. When did a major event (ESWC, QCON, Gamescom) only host TDM? How come TDM events are almost always online these days?

The skill ceiling in Quake has always been high and is part of the reason why Quake has never matched CS in terms of active players. This naturally has an effect on the effort different organizers of events and sponsors want to put in terms of money and time. Why would anyone host anything team related in Quake in a pure business perspective considering the alternatives you have? There's no secret the DH crew loves TDM, but apart from that? There are many reasons why TDM has fallen off the chart and isn't as popular anymore mainly being Quake as a whole losing it's player base over time. In that perspective duel has always been easier to arrange as whole and the competitive alternative that would dissapear last. What's easier to follow, more fun to follow is almost completely subjective so I'm not going into that debate.

The comparision with SC2 and QL is just mind boggling. The concept of two players going head to head is there but they're two entirely different games. If you want to argue viewer numbers, business value and whatnot you have CS a FPS TDM based game that does it a billion times better than QL TDM and I guess that hurts considering it's a piece of shit game :)

Strenx is a major threat to every event now. Dahang switched to QL and did very well. We have p0ni, amai, reload, twister, evil and pavel who are players that could challange the top players after some lan experience and commitment. Why not? With a massive player base we'd have a frequently changing top 5, just like SC2 or any game with a big player base has. But to get there is a different story and the decline in FPS based games is a big factor.

Beyond what game it is, the things that make duel interesting are primarily the quality of play, the level of competition and the rivalries between players. When you compare these between the two games, it's no wonder QL is so unpopular, beyond just what type of game they are. Quake doesn't have the ability to improve in these aspects without significantly more people playing and caring about being top players.

Also - it is notoriously hard to even become a mediocre Quake player. The reason quake is declining in popularity is because people find it a lot easier to become good & competitive at other games. This isn't really a fight between gametypes at LAN events that determine Quakes future. Quake is practically non-existant without duel as a primary gametype, Quake is also nothing without the potential of team games.

Although if team games are going to be taking over Quake Live, then it should at least show more activity and willingness from players to travel to these events. There are fights over who gets to take the duel spots at DH, there are pleas for teams to sign up to TDM.

well there is money to be won and not much even for the 1st place so icant blame them to team up. even if the 5th place would pay out a decent amount it would be extreme goodwill to not take part in a mercanary team. also in ql 4 very good aim players able to negate pretty much every teamwork advantage, to change this stupid weapon dropping need to be banned on the first place. when 4 people working together like a clockwork will have an advantage over 4 people hitting everything it would might motivate many players to actually stick together for a longer time / practice etc

You should not use the green brightskin, because it makes it difficult to know in which team the player I'm spectating is in.
I don't even need a brightskin as a spectator.
Use red and blue instead so I don't have to check which team I'm spectating by looking at corners of the screen each time it switches player.
It must be even more confusing for random joe stumbling into the stream, and bore him to death in less than 15 seconds.

It works for duel stream for an obvious reason, it's annoying in TDM.

TDM is so boring compared to duel. I mean it's still an awesome game, but duel is just more exciting if there are some good commentators like 2gd, greased, djwheat, joe or some pro players...
Now stream is so boring... get avek or 2gd to cast and "let's start the fucking show".

I',m so excited about duel, but there is nothing going on... why didn't they played group A and B yesterday? That way they could stream more than half of group matches instead of 25% wich are going to be streamed now because of so shitty shedule.

Also don't forget to upload configs of top players and demos/vods. But I guess vods aren't going to help because anyway there will be not enough of games streamed.

EDIT: For what/who the fu.. are they playing showmatches if there isn't any stream of it? loled hard at this.

TDM is awsome when two high skilled quite even teams play and even more so when its teams with some history or rivalry. Duel is also boring to watch when pros beating midskilled players 20 - 0. Same in all games tbh, just sad that not more top teams(players) signed up for tdm although its understandable.

i know in his position i would feel attacked too. i just assume that his innitial post "they talk about me :)" was kind of making fun out of it and not taking the statement on stream or himself too serious.

if then someone quoted the original thing and clearly reveals it as an insult and the addition of sarcasm followed by a plus which says "you are right, i don't like him either", then i would try to get more into it.

e: i think just once again, i'm just pointing out basic logic, if it really comes down to this in the first place, we should stop getting more into this since we're too different :P

rough translation about the server issue..

apparently dh got a lan-server from id to use with the tourney. but they can't configure it themselves, it has to be done by some American (remotely I guess). dh admins can't have been told not to touch the server at all. BUT! since the server is down for some reason, the guy from id can't remote into it, so they can't use it.

TDM is fun to play but not as fun to watch, duel should always be the main event for a quake tourney. It's the main reason why it became a high level tournament game.

TDM is also totally confusing for nonquakers to spec and it just looks like mindless fragging, especially with the config set so its impossible to tell the difference between the teams when the POV keeps switching.

edit: even in Duel you guys should use different forcemodels for each player so when pov switches people can follow it more easily. Like TankJR for one player and Keel for the other.

- tdm was a snoozefest because theres no competition in this cup. (basically u can tell every winner before the match and confirm it in the first 2 minutes)
- duel is hardly covered, even tho it has 1000x more promising matches as it is atm
- streamlag annoys the living shit out of the viewer

and i must say the casters are boring. nvc, gda, stermy .. those are nice people no doubt but horrible entertainers (esp. compaired to vo0gd, av3k or even zsx or people that embarasse themselfs like issue (<3) ) theres a reason why the dota guy seems so lout and exaggerated in comparison.. on the other hand owzo was very cool imo and 2gd was hilarious as ever (bringing his mum to the stream.. wtf :D)

and as a general note.. nvc couldve streamed way more duel instead of pointless blabla with gda (and yes, games were running at that point), forgotten to switch too fullscreen less (omg that k1llsen rail and rocket and whatnot on beginning of hub!.. WELL TO BAD ONLY U SEE IT U *** :D)

very little cum can be sprayed this time and its not because quake is less attractive.. its because the coverage is
