So I finally got around to watching Tree of Life tonight. Well, I should say that I attempted to watch it. I had known of this film for a while now, given that it won the Palme d'Or r this year. I had also read that it contained some rather striking visual effects and cinematography.

One thing that I didn't know was that it didn't contain any narrative. Wow, I don't mind watching films that are essentially film clips of intrguing visuals (like: Koyaanisqatsi). Yet when a film is attempting to tell a story, it might benefit when the characters have more than a few words to say to one another.

I bring this up here because I know there are some readers who are interested in film and I would like to know what other thought of it. For the record I couldn't bring myself to watch it past the 45 minute mark and instead chose to skip through the rest, primarily interested in seeing more abstract imagery.

I have had a quick browse of the IMDB forums and as I expected their is no reasonable discussion just fan boys and trolls competing for attention. A great deal of the argument there revolves around peoples difference of opinions regarding the message of the film. Half thinking it presents some deep, profound message of God's will and it's intrinsic link with the natural order of the universe - the other thinking otherwise.

Frankly, in my opinion, I saw the connection and I appreciated the imagery but that doesn't excuse their being less spoken words than there are minutes in the running time (120 for the record). It's a shame because I was expecting something wonderful and all I got was something disappointing.
