the point in this case (your comment) is that VPNs are not related to routing at all; VPNs are basically remote LANs made to appear locally over the internet. you obviously access these over your normal internet connection the way you would anything else--transiting through your ISP. you can call this "rerouting" in the sense that you set your default route or route for some subnet/host on your local machine to go through the VPN as gateway, but this is not what I was talking about. in fact that was the entire point of my first post, making use of linguistic conventions to convey a subtlety.

I admitted there are circumstances where it can, but that's the exception to the rule.

* in summary: they think that you or your ISP can actually change the way you route onto the internet on a whim. with some ISPs who are multihomed, this is possible, but not always. you can't do this yourself, and if you could, VPNs wouldn't factor into the method you used to do so.

This has a lot to do with ISP and I explained it above pretty clearly. Some ISP1 can have very good path to nearby IX'es, but have poor paths to international destinations. Other ISP2 can have good paths both to IX'es and to international addresses (and this all is related to peering agreements of ISP's and their routing tables). If you have ISP1 and VPN to a site which uses ISP2, you will probably traverse a longer, more twisted path, yet for some of the international destinations it can still be lower latency than your ISP1's path.
Actually, for example, it took me only 3 tries to find a location to which ping is much better (33 ms vs 59 ms) via my VPN to work, than via my home ISP. VPN might help in much more cases than you imagine.

The idea is that the proxy may have better routing then your ISP so you may end up with less hops/kilometers.

I use overplay.net VPN service to get 15ms less on QuakeLive chicago servers. The difference I feel from 70ms to 55ms is large enough for me to justify it. Its kinda stupid I have to do it though.. the QuakeLive servers are the only ones that gave me a bad route with 70ms. Any other game I wouldn't need a VPN and I would get 50ms with a good route. =/

Sometimes the VPN can get laggy with lots of connection interrupts though. Maybe there are better services than overplay.net but theres is probably the most user friendly.

overplay.net was really easy to use, there was like no setup or anything. You just pay for an account, get the proggy, and sign in/out out to any of their locations around the world at any time. the process of connecting to it takes like 10-20 seconds usually. I think you might pay a bit more for this ease of use though, not sure if every company is like this. Also you can cancel your account within 24 hours or something like that and get a full refund if you find the ping doesn't benefit.

I believe it works for any game if you have a bad routing...

There is no other route for you m8, whatever happens, you can only go towards Germany. The only thing what matters is what happens between you and the international backbone in Turkey. Do a trace and check how much time does each hop takes to analyze your route, and find the ISP with the best routing for your needs.

It depends on where the problem lies, if you live in a forrest somewhere and the first few hops are really bad, no way you'll really gain that much from a VPN. If not but your ISP is a cheap one and doesn't own a lot of good peering contracts but you ping well to the VPN provider, chances are that your ping will improve. (Taking the fact that this "gaming" VPN, or atleast the datacenter it's hosted in has good peering contracts to other sites).

Back when I played a lot of UT and had pingproblems i could tunnel to another swede and get A LOT better ping out to europe so it can help u but it's not 100% sure. It depends on what ur ping is to the guy that has the tunnel and his ping to the server u are going to play on! But if u have a mate with good ping u could ask him to atleast try :)

The thread is tl;dr, so I didn't read, BUT....
I'm in Seattle, so west coast and TX are the only good servers for me. There are a lot of good games in IL though, but I ping horribly.

I tried http://www.vpn4all.com/, cause they have 2 Chicago servers. They had 2 different modes for connecting the VPN, I believe UDP and TCP. I tried both servers, and both modes, and the results were varied, but negligible. I normally ping 85 to IL. With the vpn, I'd get anywhere from 75 to 95. Not worth it. There are other VPN services of course, this is the only one I've tried so far.
