these number can be totally inaccurate as swapping tournament equity can be a huge deal with a similiar skilled player for anyone except rapha and maybe cooller... they probably doing it its just not something you want to talk about in public because many spectators would see it as a form of fixing the games and the shitstorm would break out on the event organizers side aswell...

Unfortunately these numbers shed light on the fact that 'Professional' Quake is not what it was, and chances are what will never be again.

Rapha and Cypher can place top 2 for another 5 years and still barely break what Vo0 and Fatal1ty earned in a single year alone in PK.

Vedic makes a true and honest point about this. Gaming requires massive amounts of dedication and time. It's great when you're young and likely living at your parents house anyway, but as time goes on that lack of education and real-world work experience will quickly catch up to many.

Gaming has no perks like health benefits, retirement savings/pensions, steady salary, real transferrable experience, and so much more. Only a select few can truely use gaming on a resume as a marketing gig, and even then its very limited and the people that do do it better know their stuff in an interview or be able to explain it without hesitation.

If you want more reaons why gaming is not as prestigious as it is made out to be, look at how long (if ever) it takes to receive prize money, the countless unenforcable contracts, and the absolute lack of a proper governing body in order to properly manage and maintain gaming on a pro-level as a whole.

there's also one more problem as well. Older games are not profitable because no one plays them really, therefore the only way to have companies sponsoring events is to feature recently released games such as brink or the newest cod, which will die in a couple of months and the cycle goes on.

"Pro gaming" as an industry is the same as sports: it is only about viewers, not the amount of players.

Yeah, because quakers don't spend lotsa $$ on new monitors, mice, pads or accessories.

companies sponsor events only because of viewers and attenders, and ofc you have to make a distinction between "pro gaming", which is what this is about and there's less than 500.000 viewers, and "gaming related sells", an industry bigger than music and movies combined and that has nothing to do with in-game competition, unless they sponsor tournaments of exclusively new games just to forget about them in a couple of months, but then again that's about software not hardware.

and quake is not a good example really. 5k viewers, most of us still prefer playing with a $10 mouse, a crt screen and don't care about the kb.

This goes to show how minuscule prize pools are nowadays compared to the 'golden era' of Quake 3. If you compare Rapha's 2008-2011 3-year performance to Z4's 2000-2003 Q3 performance, they are pretty similar in results, but Z4 won over $150k in prize money or somewhere around there.

And the Dollar was worth a *lot more then - factor that in.

Esports + money is a joke, and has always been, it doesnt move anywhere when leagues that are supposed to be world biggest doesnt pay in time / pay at all.

cooller probably "made" the most money overall. he made a lot of money when USD meant something, and compared to say fatality, his money would've gone a LOT further, probably somewhere in the range of twice as valuable as his earnings. i honestly wonder what these guys do with all the cash, though. i mean, you play quake for a living. its not like your living expenses are high.

you could save up a lot of money (enough to pay your way through college, anyway) and then branch out from there. investments, esports team management, etc.. honestly these guys made a shitload of money for doing nothing but playing video games, i really wonder what they have to show for it all these years later. i imagine at least one of them lived smart and invested in themselves properly.

Rapha is doing exactly that with his money, paying for college.
