Since my almost 4 year old Samsung 226 BW which runs at 60 Hz doesn't seem to really perform that good in QL I've been looking at some second hand monitors.

Buying a new 2233RZ wasn't really an option because I didn't feel like spending 200-250 EUR just to bump my Hz up to 120 Hz when there are CRT's out there that will always outperform these LCD's.

I've managed to find a Sony Trinitron GDM-F520 online. It's in a pretty solid condition, is 7 years old but only has been used for 3 years and above all.. it's pretty cheap (25 EUR). Before I close the deal I'd like to know a couple of things:

- The guy who's willing to sell it says it always ran on 1600x1200@85Hz and that's also the maximum refresh rate. Since it's a trinitron panel.. I hope he never really looked into it and just doesn't know it should be able to run at 140 Hz at least, and actually 170 Hz at it's best judging by the "vertical refresh rate: 170 Hz" which I've found online.

- I'm running W7 x64, will I have any trouble with my O/S in combination with certain resolutions / refresh rates? I've read some horror stories about people having to switch back to XP to get their desired refresh rate.

- Will my CRT quest really be worth all the hassle?

You gonna have to make a custom monitor inf file for win7 with edid override, or else win7 will stay in 1600x1200, and just scale up everything to that resolution even if you want to play lower because of performance reasons. With ddr3-ddr5 mems a bilinear scale-up is not a problem ofc, but still, lower resolutions tend to look better (better quality, more crispy), so fuck win7 and the department who did the display-handling part.

If you play a lot with FPS games, you don't mind that it eats up lot of space on your table and sucks up 130W from the powersocket, well, then imho it's definitely worth it for 25, you wont regret.

Got a link to a howto/tutorial for that? Is it similar to overriding the HIDUSBF.sys files to chance mouseHz in W7?

tbh I went far beyond that by hacking each nvidia driver release as well, but atm no time to write that down for you (really sorry), and perhaps the link above could be just enough to achive what you want. I only had problems because the multimonitor/multipc +cloneing setup I have over here, so it's not needed with a single display setup.

I have a grade-A (flawless screen), SONY CPD-G520P that I am getting ready to sell. The monitor is a fine piece of equipment which is hard to come by but I need more space in my room and I don't play fps games as much as I used to.

I believe the 1600x1200 @ 85hz is true (I'm on w7 64 as well) but I would need to hook it up again to check, It might be closer to 100 or so at that rez.

Yes, ofcourse, see the last point here - http://www.pctechguide.com/crt-monitor-resolu...-rates-vsf for reference, to calculate it for yourself. 1600x1200@100Hz, 1280x960@120Hz no problem.

The monitor is really great, but it's best to use it only when you play games @ 120Hz, and have a cheap LCD for web browsing etc. (to increase its lifespan)

That's news to me, I've got two, one I've had for nearly two years, the other over a year. Never had a problem with either.

even if yours are good and didn't break

1, it's a TN panel which is the worst crime against the eyes ever
2, inputlag= min=0, average 15ms, max=30ms

good for you if you can enjoy that, but for me, no thanks

how can you compare that terrible junk to a grade-A crt? I had to use that for two days, it was a nightmare.
