I remember reading a post where (not 100% sure of this) someone quotes Sync, where he had said that the rocket explosion is a viable way of making it harder for someone to rail you (much like spamming plasma at them). Basically, it correlates with the gameplay balance. I've explained this really poorly, haha, but I can't find the post.

it picmips everything, even if it has the "nopicmip" setting in the shader (rocket explosions are just an example, but it just turns them into big orange squares).

i never used nomip because i dont like it, but i dont see any reason to not allow it. its not like its any "worse" than other cvars, like r_texturemode or r_picmip, or cg_plasmastyle/cg_oldplasma.

But plasma style adds an effect, and picmip reduces the ability to judge some things even though its easier to pick a player out. But nomip doesn't really offer any disadvantages.

Odds are the task they're referring to in the first part is just ordering the SSDs. Sure it's something that a person of average intelligence can do in a matter of minutes, but this is id employees we're talking about here.

And the second part pretty much confirms it by saying that they'll be putting the new drives to use soon and you can expect slightly faster statz in 1-5 years.

Not if people have been asking for it for a long time, people would really appreciate some things with or without announcements. Maybe its something where they didn't know if/when they'd be able to finish it, so couldn't announce it and get peoples hopes up if it doesn't happen.

now there's no way to tell if muffinman86 leaked the info first on his website and then created that longliveslasher account or if slasher made the longliveslasher account and then copy pasted muffinman's leak from his website. Either way, they're the 2 responsible for the leaks, although as mentioned eariler, muffinman86 really was the main culpit and slasher was just a victim of an NDA policy he really shouldn't still have been obliged to follow. The reason i believe longliveslasher may be slasher himself was due to the fact that he was banned for 6+ months and muffinman86 was only banned for a month or so. An admin of this site could easily figure out, based on ip, who is who (i believe muffinman has a regular account here too). So knock yourself out if you really want to know more.

Yeah....SSD. Unless it's the new gen Intel (and it can't be) or some other newly approved SSD wonder then we will see a lot of downtime when they start failing (fail ratio is much bigger than for normal hard-drives). Why not go OCZ RevoDrive? :D

I don't expect the performance of the site to be improved much anyway, since it's mostly limited by the bandwith etc.

Also there are special ssd pci-e cards for servers and have been around for a while (ocz version is the z drive). I don't think the higher fail rates are true these days but could be wrong.

SSD`s are gift wrapped in a fire box, retail HHD last 7 months, OEM HDD drives without a back cover leaving the PCB to cool will last over 10 years

LOL, retail HDDs guaranteed to die after 7 months? I've actually never yet seen an HDD die on any of my home PC's. I have about 10 drives (filled with porn) ranging from 1 to 10 years old lying around my house, they all work fine.
If we're talking about enterprise, in the lab at my work there's a 10-something years old EMC Symmetrix array, still used 24/7 and 80% of its drives still hasn't failed.
About cooling, read Google's experimental report on HDD reliability. Generally, environment factors like temperature, vibration, dust, etc almost don't affect failure rate at all. If we're talking about temperature, then coollest HDDs actually have slightly more failures than drives that work at 40-50 C.

My typical temperature for NOT OEM HDDs in my home PC RAID array is 35-38 C (with no special HDD cooling, just standard front & back fans in chassis). The array is working for 3 years already, still with near perfect SMART stats. If you put an egg on it, it will more likely hatch after a while rather than become fried.
SSDs don't even usually have temperature sensors, because of their low power and physical impossibility to get hot (they receive not enough power to accumulate heat before it's dissipated into environment)
Your statement that heat cuts life span is purely theoretical and needs to be experimentally checked. So far, experiments made by Google in their datacenters tell that heat, if it's not extreme, doesn't affect HDD lifespan much and that too low temperature can have just as much effect as too high temperature.

Of course i have not. Call me a bigot but there's something about first person roleplaying games that I find irreparably repulsive.
Never liked the old Might and magic series to begin with, and i suppose that transferred over to all the "newer" games like Morrowind, Oblivion etc. (I consider everything newer than 2001 "new" :D ).
From what I've seen on youtube vids and general reviews of F3 onward, the atmosphere just does not seem worthy of the trademark humor and general "feel" of the Fallout universe.

Fallout 3 and New Vegas are awesome games.

is baldur's gate very similar to fallout (freedom-wise and stuff like that)? fallout 2 is probably my favourite rpg of all time (maybe tied with morrowind : d), and I want to try out bg since a long time but somehow my motivation always disappears once I've installed the game.

i think bg1 is very similar (deph-wise) to fallout1. You have a set, linear main storyline and a good number of side quests to indulge your adventuring spirit :) Nothing really breathtaking (especcialy if you played the sequel), but very fun nonetheless.
bg2, on the other hand, is vastly superior in terms of story branching, quantity and diversity of npc-s, locations, etc. I consider bg2 and F2 the best games in it's respective genres. BG2 provides a LOT more play time than F2 and achieves the same general "feel" that pulls you in instantly. IMHO, you really can't miss with these games.

What I really love about Fallout is that I am never forced to do anything, at all. There is a main quest but you can go to any city you feel like and do any side quests you're capable of, in many different ways. You can kill / say "fuck you" to pretty much anybody and keep playing the game (well maybe the whole city will want to kill you but you know what I mean). Anyway, downloading Arcanum now :~).

My friend who also happens to play Quake is such a big ass Morrowind nerd, he's been playing it for like a decade now or so, he built his own house in the game, he did every single quest and he can still find stuff that interests him. At one point he got bored after doing everything in the game, and randomly hit 'morrowind' on google... that's when he realized there were two expansions.... you can imagine the situation :D

They have to find the original authors, form a contract, and remove/ replace anything that they can't obtain the rights too.

Have a mapping contest where there are 3 winners every 2 months, the winner gets $350, runner up gets $150, and third gets $100. This is for duel/tdm/ctf etc. This gets the incentive for mappers to think hard and create some very unique and interesting maps. Also allows id to get good maps for CHEAP.

How to do it->

Create a mapping program and add extra page on quakelive.com so that you can create maps using this program when logging into the forums. What you create is saved in their database and has a Maximum mb amount so you can only create 1-2 maps at a time.

Every texture and code and graphic is on that webpage so you can't steal anything from anywhere else.

After you are done making the map you can upload it to quakelive staff for testing and feedback. Remeber to have a terms page that specifies that anything you create and save on quakelive.com in the form of a map is property of idsoftware. And people have to click this to enter competitions and shit.


You could also have people pay premium/pro so that they can get more space to create maps in their account, so instead of 2-3 maps they can make like 20 or some shit.

Well I don't know, I think 300 or so bucks is not very well paid, competition or not, if id then gets the right to put the maps in the game.
But if id had to pay a decent amount of money to top 3, they'd fuck 3 years of ql budget every month.

300 bucks for a map is still a ton more than what most Q3 mappers got (exactly jack shit, since the competitive scene completely ignored new maps and nobody would be crazy enough to pay for them, for whatever reason). I think ANY prize, even permament free premium/pro subscriptions for winners, would be a reasonable incentive. For most mappers, the simple fact that their maps would be played on would be a huge reward already

Pretty sure we'd see a lot of people coming forward with remakes of their Q3 maps, so it wouldn't be such a huge effort for them either - they already spent their time on them, FOR FREE, and now could actually get paid for that.

If those same guys were already willing to spend their time, for absolutely nothing, creating something which was doomed to get (at most) almost zero exposition, i'm sure they'd jump in at the occassion to finally get some buck for their effort.

if the rumor mill is to be trusted 3wave wanted 5 figures for their remaining ctf maps, which undoubtly slightly raised the bar in terms of what mappers expect from id for their input.

I just wasn't really around or couldn't find what he said. I kind of wish that every month or two they held a mapping competition for the best of the best for each gametype. The winner gets his map added to quakelive, 50 bucks, and he gets to put it on his resume or whatever and id gets the rights to the map upon submission. It might be a somewhat raw deal if it's that cut and dry, but hell I'd do it for fun any day. Seems simple enough?

me subscribing to pros id like to watch.. the website informing me via liveticker how they perform, offering me join buttons when they connect to "marked as tournament" servers that will direct me to the gtv bot that automatically spawns with those servers..
a ingame fullscreen dropdown menu for spectators that will let me choose between different casters that used the "join as caster" premium feature + a decent little friendlist chat window, also available in fullscreen spec mode.

as mentioned earlier a trackmania like defrag implementation that lets everyone run speedmaps for like 5 minutes, shows the fastest run to everyone afterwards and that switches to the next map afterwards

a "best of" statistics page that actually means something.. not showing me a list of who aimebots most but actual tournament results for each gametype with on demand demo links (not downloading the file but starting it right away) and a top5 list for defrag for every map, also with on demand links.

a ingame tier system that actually rewards you for becoming highest tier by giving you some kinda special nametag and autoinvites for the various automatically generated website tournaments, in wich succeeding will lead to LAN organizers inviting you or your clan to..

the centralized aspect of ql really fits speed running and it would also help to make unexperienced players aware of the beauty and potential of the movement in general and get them hooked... its such a shame that it got ignored so far :(

Real stuff: From looking inside .pk3`s, there are maps that have no levelshots but are hinted at by some appropriately named shader scripts. One of these maps is called "Up in the Air", and it`s most complete script file can be found in pak03.pk3. It supposedly uses a bunch of green textures, if you look at the shader scripts. I have no idea whether UITA is a new map or a re-hash of an old one, but it interests me.
