i thought hosting q3 servers was FREE and paying 4e a month for getting your own server in QL was id robbing the community of something that they have gotten for free for years? right?

It's a dedi server (afaik) in netherlands with awesome pings to europe. We have 6 servers, gtv, mumble and stuff. We also host echbot for us and #warsow.pickup

Of course you're free to host your own server as in you don't have to pay ID but it doesn't mean there aren't other costs involved.

True, but in Quake 3 you could modify any part of the server you wanted, any configuration you wanted, any MOD you wanted, any any map you wanted to upload out of the hundreds of thousands to choose from, and anything else you could possibly think to do with the game engine. Quake Live server options have about 3% of the total available server options you had in Quake 3. You pay more to get more. A lot more.

being able to select the server location is really neat though

oh yea because people actually used all those settings and maps, its not like the same maps were played over and over again using global settings, right?

I think its good that there arent too many configurable server options. The problem is that we're restricted to using only servers which iD have approved for use, so there are less overall servers on multiple ISP's. Furthermore, all servers go down with an update... if iD decide to take down QL for whatever reason, that's the end of it for all of us whether we like it or not because we don't own hard-copies of the game like with Q3

on a serious note though, paying for stable dedicated server will never compare to QL, who only has to offer limited configuration settings and constant downtime.

I highly doubt it's a surprise that servers needs to be payed.
It doesn't really matter when you announce these things.
People rarely put any money in until last few days anyway.

I don't understand why people are trying to bash CPMA...

1. The community is small and dying, they can't harm you hordes of brainless ql-zombies (I know I play it too but would drop it instantly if there was a game that has the same community but it was faster)
2. Both games require skill, but different type of skill
3. Anything that supports 1on1 or CTF is GOOD!

So stop whining, if you don't like CPMA then you don't have to pay for it or play it (I don't pay but I'm also not really playing it (did not play a single game organized trough #cpmpickup)).
