I'm getting serious FPS problems from time to time when I'm running things through Firefox. I can't watch high quality videos in Youtube at all (high quality/HD), dispite loading/streaming perfectly well, they play at extremely low FPS. My main concern is that I also get a similar thing with Quakelive. It appears worse when I'm shooting bots on DM17. It will run perfectly well for a few seconds and then really judder for a few seconds. It's less apparent on proper maps when I play on-line but it still happens from time to time. It's really annoying! :/ My PC isn't an up to date power house but it should run things like this perfeclty well. I use the latest version of firefox, ATI 4650 1Gb, 1Gb ram, samsung 2233 120hz, external USB Native Instruments sound card.
Would love to clear this up. My PC seemed to develop this problem around christmas time. Previous to that it was fine.
All help greatly appreciated.

FPS depend mainly on your CPU, and if playing with a higher resolution like your Samsungs native 1680x1050 also on the GPU. You could try lowering your resolution at least..

Also, does your CPU have only one core?

lol then it shouldn't cause any problems, just try running quake with prism or with another brwoser (chrome, opera) and tell us about your results

Prism is a standalone app
Chrome is the fastest browser

Just installed Chrome. It's fixed the youtube HD clips - they run perfect now. I tried quake quickly on DM17 vs bots where the problem seems to be most apparent and it 'was' still occuring. I'll try an on-line match to see if it's any different (this is what would obviously concern me most). Thanks

Quakelive is exactly the same in Chrome but as I mentioned - the high quality youtube clips are perfect now.
Maybe it's the new catalst drivers I installed when I got my 2233rz samsung screen at christmas. I had to update to get 120hz.

try Prism then and if that doesn't help, I would suggest you try a different version of ati drivers.

Thanks. Any recomendations as to a good version of catylasts to use? I just updated to the latest I could find so that I could get 120hz to run with my new monitor at christmas. Thanks again dude

I don't really know as I use an nvidia gfx ; ) the last time I was using Ati was when I had a radeon X1300XT (suckage!) and a radeon 9550 ;p

I had a problem with FF randomly dropping my FPS to single digits, so I switched to playing QL through Prism and I haven't had an issue since. A little bit annoying since you can't use greasemonkey scripts easily with prism(possible, but I dont know how) so you'll be stuck with shit match browser.

firefox became a hog a few months ago. Use prism.

Also, some people just can't get anything better than jittery 12x fps since release and some can't even get anything stable above 100, whatever the fuck config they'd use on pretty recent machines. I gave up trying to find any browser/hardware/config rule for either this or the sensitivity bug.

No, not in Quake, but the same problem is occuring with Youtube and even Facebook games so it's obviously something else.

does it actually matter in rpg, rts and racing games whether vsync is turned on or off?

in fps games it obviously does..

i dislike the effect it has, so yea, for me vsync isn't an option in any game. it's more apparent in fps but that's most games i play anyway :)

Thanks for the replys. From what your all saying it must be down to the latest version of FF. I didn't have this problem for the first year of using Quakelive (also with HD youtube clips) with this exact same PC (other than the recent upgrade of monitor, sound card and graphics card drivers).

the yt vids problem is caused ( iirc ) by both firefox being shitty since 4-5months and a random flash update that causes the player to need a fuckton more cpu to be able to display anything.

is quake 3 running smooth? cus ql seems to have quite high requirements compared to q3. but then again, my computer is not exactly new anymore.

if it's not always, and seems to be more like interval juddering, then it might be a driver/memory leak/debug whatever problem.

what you could try:
disable triple buffer
disable vsync
if something along the lines of multithread/multi-display can be disabled do so.

last option, roll back to a previous driver, if that helps wait for a newer one with the 120hz fix for your monitor.
