At Qcon 2010 they did mention they still were not satisfied with the netcode. Since then though, I haven't heard a thing regarding it.

I aim the best on 35-45 ping. 50 -55 is next. 25-35 is next and then 60-65 ping.

And THEN 15 ping and anything over 65 is fucking terrible.

I'm always playing on a 50-60 ping because my Inet is only 6000DSL (max 600kbit download) so I can't say anything about ping below that level. However in CPMA and Warsow I get a stable 30-45 ping and seem to hit more. I don't know if it's the netcode that pushes my ping down or something else (like the games not runing in a browser) but I think lower ping in general seems to be better for hit-registration.

I mean, have you considered that aiming with different pings (in the range 0 - 60) might not be harder but just different? So, that when you are used and comfortable with say 40, the difference when playing at 20 makes your accuracy drop not a change in "hitbox size".

After all, we all know people who can handle ping 90 really well, because they are used to it.

I feel a difference as well though. It is especially noticeable with ping 40+ and mg - it is sooooo much easier to aim with that kind of ping. Shaft aim can be easier but it is less responsive so with a guy that has really good dodging it is not as effective - it feels different though.

I had to play for 6 months on ping 40/50 on nl and I got used to it. With ping 40 I basically hit the same as with ping 28 (which I have now) but it is definitely a different feeling. You need to get used to it and then you won't experience a difference anymore (but that applies to so many things in life so I do not think that it is correct :P because my mg is still shit).

I play a lot of TF2 on US servers mainly because I only tend to play TF2 really late and night, and cba to put up with drunk chavs on UK servers or irritating frenchmen on Euro servers. That plus more people seem to own mics on US servers and the chit-chat is fun.

I average ping around 120. Thing is, I don't really care much. I still own it up mainly because I'm used to that ping. Put me on a UK server with 40 ping and it feels so much easier with rockets (mainly because of the delays) but with hitscan, I find it a bit harder to be honest. Reason for this? I'm used to the netcode from the higher ping.




In short - learn to fucking aim with a lower ping. Stop depending on intDerp

Here's how the game plays for me:

15-30 ms. I have to aim properly, good dodging actually matters when I'm using MG/LG.

30's/40's. I like this ping range, not much disadvantage with rockets plus hitscan feels solid.

55/60+ ms. The minor delay of rockets can slightly bother me, but, with MG/LG/RG I don't have to aim properly at all. I can feel myself not tracking people precisely yet I hit them still, I don't claim to know anything about how the netcode works, but, I'm extremely in-tune with how it feels. It feels like I'm being given significant leeway when it comes to hitscan at this ping. I hit rails far easier and I don't have to track properly to hit extremely high percent LG/MG.

90+ms. Game feels shit now, but on the old hitboxes it wasn't that bad, I could go on US servers with 95-100 ping and comfortably hit 50 MG on ffa servers.

A developer can say it's bullshit all they want, but I'd be willing to bet they know fuck all about how the game really feels.

I can play with like 15ms on servers in my country but I get a far better hitscan aim (LG, MG and RG) on 50-60ms servers.
Above that there's too much delay though.

In UT2k4 on the other hand I hit billion times more the lower my ping is.

I got exactly the same experience. Sometimes its really funny to play 50-60 ping because I am hitting rail after rail which were so completly of... and missing rails which had to hit... its just random.

i underwrite the leeway, but i still prefer the 40 range because i have the impession that this only applies at more easy movement patterns. when it comes to strafin opponents, shaft duells, i find the 40 range more responsive and givin the better result.

Ive got about 40ms on NL, 50ms on DE since the launch of QL. And I've heard many ppl talk about this but since i never tried 15 ping, i couldnt rly say whether its bullshit or not, until a few weeks ago when they put the swedish servers back up, and can now verify its complete bullshit, and i even find it quite hilarious and sad at the same time that ppl whine at too low pings, its a completely different game, it feels very responsive and everything hits.

Best ping to have is 35-50 ms for the aim-assist boost it gives you.

My aim increases, the lower my ping. I could never get under 20 ping while in Europe, but that was the ideal ping when I played. Plasma for example, becomes unusable over that.

I would like to point out that the person you are playing can affect your aim a lot. Although I disagree that your aim would be better on a higher ping, possibly you have been playing against different people on the different servers, and they crappy settings or connections, thereby causing your aim to be worse.

Visje and dem0n are absolutely right. Lower ping is better until you reach about 25ms, then it starts acting weird.

Projectile weapons keep getting better even at < 25ms delay, the rail is different but seems to be working "properly", but the LG is way off. At <25ms you'd expect to hear a continuous stream of hitbeeps if your crosshair stays on the target but it's actually WORSE than at >25ms. Going from 22ms to 35ms I see a 7-9% LG increase, EVERY single time. I often connect to friends servers without looking at the location and I can instantly tell when I'm in a <25ms server; the game feels smooth but the LG doesn't register.

Please id, fix this fucking problem instead of telling us that the netcode is working properly (I saw sponge or whatever his name was responding to Visje, he basiclly told him to fuck off then closed his thread. WTF).

In QL I don't think I've ever played on a server with more than 30 ping. Simply because of having the luxury of always having a nearby FFA or CA server. My usual ping is 20 to 25.

I couldn't believe this story so I did a test and joined an east-european server. My ping was a steady 45ms.

I don't think I've ever had such a good rail and LG as in these games I just played. Finally I understand how some people with higher ping than me can get such sick accuracies.

After i got suspicious about my (massive) difference in performance on western and eastern european servers i have asked my neighbor if i could connect to his access point, and used that to see what happens then on western european servers. After that i was 100 percent convinced.

afaik they removed any method a while ago. there used to be a ping cmd that could set your ping to xxx amount, but they removed it because it could be used to get behind teleporters or under the fog in some maps, and instead of fixing the maps, they removed the cmd. so, the only way is to do something stupid like DL lots of torrents while playing :D

get q43a, there is no hitscans, every projectile is 100% serverside from launching to physics and fx, all netcode for every entity spawned is fixed which speeds up the games and less FPS drop

why i can make q43a dedicated server vids with a athlon xp 2600+ barton with fraps all running on the same desktop with specular lighting enabled as default in q43a r_skipspecular 0, forced off in everything else

and my code is so clean, no work arounds, recode it, its just big skyboxes that will slow q4 down on dedicated server games

any change with a si_cvar on a pure server using rCon/admin main menu, should reset and restart the match and tell all clients the new settings, the code exists but dont know if it works, any other network synced cvar will not be included

q3's netcode aside from LAN was dubious from the beginning. QL's is aswell, I can still hit thin air and score hits, happens in every single game.

my idea to throw in here is when i tried different cfg mouse settings with some i noticed that i hit better on ger servers (50-60) than on msk (5-15) so my guess is personal cfg mouse settings affect high ping accuracies

Since I started QL, I have almost only played on my home servers, pinging 3-4. Everything feels nice and smooth, rails are good, lg is great.

Now, when I join a .de server, pinging 35, I have to completely change the way I aim. My LG aim is the 'quirky crosshair-only-on-the-model' type, and it works LIKE SHIT on 35 ping. If, however, I change my aiming style to the 'keep-your-xhair-stable-in-the-general-direction-of-the-enemy', LG on 35 ping is like taking candy from a baby. It seems the hitbox lags behind the strafing player and never moves from the crosshair =)

Rail is mostly the same, minus the barely noticeable firing delay (or hit delay, when using cg_predictLocalRailshots 1)

I ping 6-12ms to UK servers and under 20ms across Europe - I had a much better acc, with all weapons, with my previous 35-45 ping. Never really thought about it tbh, haven't had this ping that long - thought maybe it just took some getting used to. However, I played a couple of duels to swe/pol servers, and my aim felt far more predictable.

Not that i ping as low as 15ms anywhere living in Scotland but i can only agree with what has been said before. Vor summarised well what i have experienced with QL netcode.

I've moaned on the quakelive forum about the netcode many a time. I wish they would just drop unlagged code altogether. I think it's more intuitive to have a slight delay than for the server to randomly decide what hits. Plus when people choose a server with a ping over 100ms, it's clear that almost no hitscan weapons will hit them and they basically have autododge.

I know that they would like a level playing field online but it's just not realistic. Seriosly, why diminish the experience of people with good internet connections, to benefit those who don't? If you have shit internet and it bothers you enough, move home! :P

So what about this netcode experience:

I play on min 48 ping, max 56 ping in that 8 ping difference I go about 40 - 90 ping in difference with the feeling and registering of lg, rail and rockets.

ie. on 48 const i can track to about 35% percent lg, same servers, same players, same computer, but when my tripleplay (TV) is active and I have const 56 ping, I have to predict like almost a centimeter in front of opponents to hit lg, etc.

What pisses me off is people that have 15-20 ping, hitting 40% normal lg accuracy and whining about it.
I can respect time you spent for that, I really respect game skill of people who know how to play, but I don't respect is a good player under 30 ping going nuts about few percent of lg.
Also you have an option to manipulate your ping, thus manipulating the way netcode behaves for you, an option that is unavail to most of QL players so use it or don't don't. Many of us can't opt to give ourselves a higher ping just to hit more :)

I was whining a long long time about this ridiculous ping issue until syncerror told us to look into the netcode/extrapolation AGAIN (again because they just "improved" it a few weeks ago) and then... nothing happens.
To be honest I dont expect a fix for this issue because I am whining for so long... since closed beta... after the netcode "fix"... I gave up. So I found myself on servers where I ping 35+ and Im fine.

The best fix atm is to play cpma. Xerp is what ql netcode/extrapolation should be...

The game is shit. I think most reasonable people will agree with that. It's basically Q3/OSP with added bugs and some important features missing. So from a gamer's perspective it's actually a step backwards from what we had in 2002.

The netcode on the other hand is a complete joke. I cannot for the life of understand how some people go and play online tournaments with money prizes and shit. This game is almost like playing lotto. I don't think I've ever played a single game where at least one of my rails went completely through the enemies body without registering or hitting completely off - sometimes the rail even lands into a wall - and the hit registers. I actually thought about making just a movie out of those hits, but why bother. It's not like they're gonna fix it anyway... I'll give this game 6 more months, maybe a year before they shut it down.

I kinda feel sorry for the guys who bought into this bullshit and got year long premiums. You are in fact playing almost exactly the same game with most of the same maps as you did in Q3 which you bought in 1999. I can't think (off the top of my head) 1 thing about this game that most people would say is an improvement over Q3/OSP/CPMA. They essentially sold you the same game twice. Only that the second time they removed a lot of features which I'm sure if the game will still be developed, will require an extra payment.
I like the way you don't have to "install" it and use the site to find matches, but I'm not talking about that. I'm talking just about the game. Oh, the graphics are a _little_ nicer but 3x more demanding on the gpu.

With all that being said; I ask you? Where is your beloved Arquon now? Back in the Q3/OSP/CPMA days he was damn near of a selfproclaimed god and he finally gets the chance to work with id and wtf has he done? I'm serious; if someone can answer this for me - what was/is arquon doing in QL? Is he responsible for this shitty netcode? I heard somewhere that he was only counseling at id or something like that. Did they really need to hire a person who sole job was to point at Q3 and say "make this"?


Anyway, the game has been constantly lagging for the past couple of days and I can't remember when the last update was and they sure don't seem to have a lot of luck with ads considering I've been watching the same Fallout ad for like a year now and they also removed pb (to cut down costs?). So I imagine with all those servers they must be losing money and it's only a matter of time before they pull the plug?

You guys are nuts. Was playing all time on Russian servers with 32ms, thn played on Warsaw#1 with 20ms and that was just awesome.

We were talking about pings higher than 35 though.

I had the chance to start playing QL for the first 7-8 months of its life with a fiber connection, with a ping of 6 in my country servers and roughly 15-16 in .de.

Now, this was in beta which means it could be meaningless, but I remember being able to have a higher LG accuracy as a total quake beginner (just played ETQW and some q4/defrag before that) back then than now, with my shitty 60-75 ping (which went up from the 45 i had in beta), and a way lower sens.

This was in beta, and having a ping of 16 was just insane.

Nowadays, I must say there's something fishy, even tho I admit I understand nothing at all about these issues which means I might be wrong, and it might just be an impression of mine: I always get those two different ping values , and the higher one is usually more reliable in terms of hitscans, whilst rockets take whole years to reach enemies.

When I was still in Germany I had 20ms and now I've got 35-60ms in austria (upc, depends on daytime unplayable from 18~22). My connection is overall shit and I wish I had my old 20ms back I miss it Q.Q
What I found weird back then was that I couldn't play on polish and uk servers though I had around 40ms. Swedish servers felt fine and I had 40ms too. Don't know whether things have changed now as I only play on german, french and netherland servers nowadays.

At 50ms ping my rail shots looked totally wtf but they were so easy to land, ridiculous. My shaft was 35% when it looked like what would be barely 20% on 20ms servers :[

The fact that there are so many opinions and posts about this matter surely shows there is something wrong. I know it's kinda obvious to state this but some guys who think it's bullshit most people claim here are either very lucky not to be affected by the netcode or are just blind/too used to notice/whatever.

What i notice is that some scandinavian friends are dying to be able to play with a lower ping and I think they are just in that range where the game totally sucks. (70~80 ms), for some even higher due to improper connection but still arguable.

I myself have decent conditions, pinging 16 ms tops in homecountry, The Netherlands. Frankly my accuracies with hitscan (obv.) is higher when I play with a slight higher ping, let's say 20 to 30ms.

I wonder if server settings are the same across different locations. I ping 40 on DE as well as on NL but need some time to adjust after switching server locations. DE feels very smooth to me while on NL models seem to stutter a little. Like if they are running different server fps or similar.

It seems most of the people saying higher ping is better are from the Netherlands. Maybe there's a routing or stability issue to the Amsterdam server? I ping 10 there and it's usually great, but there have been times it has felt weird and choppy. That would make more sense...

maybe you aim better when you play on the ping you are used to play? as long as it stays between 20 and 60-80

wouldn't using truelightining 0 at the low ping help ?
