In January 2010

Alexei "Cypher" Yanushevsky won the IEM European Championship and it�s time again for Season 5 of IEM to kick off with the European Championship Finals in Kiev, Ukraine on 20th Jan 2011. Having beaten some of the most formidable opponents like Anton "Cooller"Singov at QuakeCon, the Belarusian talks to Stuart "SwitchbacK" Macdonald in this pre-IEM interview about the tournament, his current shape and motivation to win the World Championship and his favorite Quake Live match.

You practically owned the latter half of 2010. Is the whole of 2011 in your sights?
"Before the new year came, I aimed myself to win every single tournament in 2011."

Rich clubs. What a surprise.

Tennis is a better example because QL is duel. We see different winners and new talent all the time. QL? rapha and? moar rapha. no new talent. Top players are old OSP players.

QL is currently as bad as pro Painkiller scene few years ago. Quake is dead I'm afraid.

I think we can agree that the top 4/5 is quite known by now but there are always a few strange things happening, in- and outgame which gives drama (throwing matches, grudge matches and whatnot) to entertain us!

Thus, ESR will be the first to react and make a huge thread with all the crap/trolling �nd some usefull posts. Hate-love relationship basically.

ROoofl. This is a joke right? ... YOu can't logically say you're better than Cooller just because you got 50 frags in a shorter period of time:
1) you played different opponents
2) he could have had a tougher game vs his opponent (you could have had an easier game vs your opponent). perhaps the game style was slower etc

most retarded excuses i've heard throughout gaming. nerves are what wins finals...cypher has won plenty of them himself, in fact quite a few more than rapha. rapha has bested cypher in quite a few, and cypher has bested him in many group matches. finals are what this game comes down to, they are the more important matches, stop making excuses for your favorite player losing. He lost, get over it. He'll win plenty because he is always going to be top3 at every tourney he attends, something rapha nor any other quake player can claim in the past few years

Oh come on, I'm Cypher fan as well but saying that "rapha is not that smart" is just not right. He's VERY intelligent player with excellent combat skills&timing. I'd say he won 90% of his titles due to very smart play style (and being patient&calm is a part of it).

Of course skill-wise Cypher is the sickest fuck mofo since Toxic from Q4 ;]

Skill wise like in skill overall, in his case - I call that a real talent. Cypher, when he's playing his game, has just as good lg as strenx or rg as k1llsen if not better + he's better than anyone in dealing huge dmg in short period of time, his weapon choice is just superb to others and he is superior in many other aspects than the rest as well, imo.

I doubt that cypher can win every tournament this year. He chokes way too much in important games. See rapha vs cypher at dreamhack.

K1llsen and rapha can beat him because he doesn't seem as confident vs these to guys as vs strenx/cooller.

Have you seen the game vs k1llsen on dreamhack? K1llsen not only beat him he destroyed him on aerowalk. Imo K1llsen is the only guy out there who can put up pressure on cypher only due to his aim and combat skills. People always say that k1llsen is rail only but I think his lg and rl can much cypher's aimskill easily. Though I agree that cypher is the smarter player and doesn't make that much mistakes as k1llsen does.

I wanna see those guys in a bo5, would be my dream final :)

Spawns, mouse ... What's next? Temperature of the air, hight of desk ?!
Watch the vod and tell me where k1llsen got lucky spawns and cypher didn't. Nice how cypher trapped k1llsen at the jump pad and got killed ;)
Even zsx said that cypher's rockets look ordinary and that he does have problems vs k1llsen's aim.

Usually cypher is the one who sets the space of a game. He always looks for opportunities his favour, where he is 100% sure that he will win the fight or deal dmg without receiving any at all. He is prolly the best player at it no doubt about that but k1llsen is on a par with cypher's lg, rl and ofc rail if not even better. He can't set the space vs k1llsen nor rapha because the first guy doesn't have a weak weapon and deals a ton of dmg in every fight and the second one is mr brain himself who prolly has the best positioning, calmness and ovierview of all players.
Overall cypher might be the best player but I guarantee you that he will struggle vs those two players if he can't stay calm and both bringt out their a game.

What would reduce the luck factor? You want the same spawn over and over again? Imo that is a huge improvement compared to quake 3 where it was truely random.

Well, what Q1, VQ3, CPM and Q4 have in common was that because of the stronger weapons and fitting tl you get higher scores (talking about tournament matches between equal skilled players). Higher scores even out randomization factors in the spawn code.
In Q3 for example you have to run the spawns or you will loose even when you play like a god - resulting in a more +forward game which we all want.

Personally I'd like to try q3 (furthest from corpse) system without randomization but with instant respawn (like in Q1/CPM). (Ping Pong spawns would need to be elimated ofc). Because of weapon reload and other things spawn runs should end after maybe 3-5. May work, maybe not.
