Forget everything you learned in counter strike

Check out the advanced ingame GUI and put together a config that you feel comfortable with.

take a look at my recent video, it demonstrates a solid level of play which covers movement and weapon selction.

Play some bots on SP, once you can beat them on medium to hard, you should start playing humans and learning timing.

If you play online from the start you'll just keep dying and won't learn what the weapons do.

Yes because apart from a few duels recently (as I'm shockingly bad at duel atm due to inactivity) I always played on the hardest servers against opponents who are ranked higher.

Losing a 100 games to better players would make you a better player than winning a 1000 games against random easy publics.

So the % mean nothing aside from giving those without a real understanding of games somethign to focus on.

I think you're the first person to seriously try to challenge someone to an FFA in order to prove your skill. You're reaching new lows.

FFA is a game mode which still reflects the difference in skill between a player.

I have played a few pros in FFA they still win convincingly in FFA.

So your point is null. Its not the ultimate test of skill, but I have played around 6 hours in 12 months, so I'm not in that sort of form.

FFA will still determine a winner and aloser, and from the difference in frags across several maps, its still a pretty good indicator of skill difference.

FFA has FAR more variables, so scores from individual games are absolutely meaningless. Unless you play a very large number of games (all with the same people), you can't even remotely begin to compare FFA results.

Guess what? There's this other mode you can play, which will allow you to more accurately compare results in just 3 games - it's called DUEL.

When I played in FFA vs a pro I lost by a large margin everytime.
whether it was a TDM god or a duel god, the results were always the same, the better player would still be able to win by a convincing amount every single time.

If you join a FFA with 8-10 players, you can still tell the difference in skill or not between two players based on score.

I already know top duellers aregood in FFA becaue I have played them for years on and off, in some tourneys FFA have been used to do initial seeds, in quake 4 some good duellers like HELL would consistently wipe the floor with me in FFA.

you can tell a top player from nearly anymode, the way they move, the time they take between shots, their reails, their shaft, its a feeling you get. That feeling is not lost in FFA. you're just arguing that because you know if he accepts he'll be proved wrong

I can see how you'd try to dodge a duel with drex here, because you know that you'd stand no chance... but why are you dodging a duel against this guy? Duel requires a more continious playstyle which can be exploited if you're not in shape. Badly. Why do you think singers warm up their voice, or athletes stretch, in game its the same, the timings, the concentration, it goes away without topping it up.

I have about 4 hours of play in the last 12-14 months and that's been FFA. When I duelled I played that in a day at times.

No excuse just fact,. So I don't see the point in playing the most demanding aspects of the game when I know I'm in such bad shape (I can't even beat DIRD! atm), not because I'm a bad player, but because I just cannot commit the time, but mostly because the game bored me a long time ago.

Don't watch that Christmas video it's a completely waste of time and offers you nothing.

Learn the movement (strafejumping mainly).

Armors respawn after 25 sec and Mega health after 35 (2 mins on some few maps). Try to time at least one major item at all times (i.e. Red Armor or Mega Health).

Besides that all you really can do is keep playing. You won't get anything from listing to all kind of advice since you won't be able to remember them or work on them all. Just play and you will slowly evolve.

Edit; and as cityy said, first get a decent cfg and HUD. The standard HUD isn't really good imo.

Saying something like that makes no sense really.

I have to disagree with regards to FFA; once you can beat bots at the hardest difficulty level consistently (which should require some strafe jumping and some timing), then I think you should move straight into duel.

You just learn so much so quickly, and attain all the basics required for every other game mode; something which you cannot say about FFA. MG cess can get you ridiculously far in FFA...... you learn strategy, positioning, sound cues, just so so much from duel.

However, I suppose the best advice would be to just rack up the hours :)

Its better to play players instead of bots because bots have little or no concept of weapon selection and their routes are predictable due to their path finding algorithms. Even their dodges are weak, A semi competent player will be harder because when the bots do damage, its usually from abuse of certain situation that you don't get with a Human. Shaft on t2 for example has stupid accuracy, but you can kill by standing at choke points, players learn. Bots dont. Waht you learn vs bots does not always carry over to humans.

Plus by playing players you get to learn stuff bots dont, effective capming, of over use of a weapon in a certain area. Plus its more personal.

Bots not a substitute for online FFA and who says he's into duel anyway?

Why do you think the FPS market is geared towards team games? Only a handful of people on ESR care about quake duel, the rest of the world does not.

Actually, hopping into duel would be the worst thing he could do. Due to the broken skill matching system, he'd just end up playing people who are tons better than him and getting raped badly.

I'd say start with FFA to get the feel of the game, the go over to CA to practice aiming and movement and after that start playing some tdm/ctf/duel.

1, Prepare for endless ownage!
2, Play FFA for 1 week and drop it for life.
3, Play CA games for a few months, it's the worst and a horribly stupid gametype, but the quickest way to learn the weapons and the feel of the game.
4, Watch pro tournament vods and fragmovies with high ratings

If you are still interested after this, you could start playing the real gametypes, search for games in pickup channels on IRC

best way to improve quickly is duel hardcore.

item control vs equal or weaker opponents is quite easy to learn and you should be able to time control 2 items to the second within a week, without a problem (talking ahout duel).

- Learn to strafe jump
Forget all from CS. Practice strafing in one direction (holding W and A and moving your mouse left, and then W and D and mouse right. Then just alternate them - make sure you're leaving it to the last second to switch WA to WD. If you have trouble alternating it, do it every other jump - so WA, WA, WD, WD, WA, WA, WD, WD). Don't pay too much attention to these people going 1000UPS!!!! on youtube videos of strafe-map tutorials because you rarely need to go that fast ingame due to the map geometry.

- Edit your config
Bright-model enemies at the very least. Descending hitbeep tone is a must for me since the deeper the sound, the more damage you've done. Picmip can be useful and as you know from CS, higher monitor refresh rate is a must.

- Play some CA to get used to weapons
Self explanatory. Try not to stay static and camp too much

- Learn to time by playing some public CTF (at least that's how I found it easiest)
The easiest map I found to practice this on to start with was Siberia. Hold the red-armor room with an LG out (so if anyone goes up you can easily track them for teh lulz) and time the RA every 25 seconds from when you pick it up. It can be tempting to hold it off till the 5 or 0 times (which isn't really a bad thing) but get used to throwing it off occasionally. Also try to time the health-kit below it (every 1 minute from pickup) and the main powerup (2 minutes)

- Move onto duel if you can
It's the best way in my opinion to get better at timing and positioning etc since it's really needed if you don't want to get raped. Don't get too down losing and don't play servers with lower skilled people often. It's more fun and tempting but it really hinders you in the long run.

- Watch POV demos
Self explanatory again

Higher monitor refresh rate isn't a must for Cypher. Just saying

Jamerio is really bad at Quake. If you want to get good, the first rule is to disregard everything Jamerio says, especially about Quake.

Pro Tip: Learn to time items as you learn to play. Make it a habit to practice timing whenever you play. If you learn to play first, you'll be falling into some bad habits about wanting to concentrate on the action instead of control.

Advice Tip: Don't play Quake Live. You'll regret it and you'll probably quit within a month anyway, if the game isn't shut down completely by that time.

you need to get angry like everyone else

A little note about the rocket launcher. You will need to learn how to use it for both defense and offense. Prediction aim at the targets feet. Don't just shoot every time you can. Wait til you know where they are going to be. If you see a rocket going directly at their feet get ready to set up for an air rocket or rail. Spam is important, but don't give your position away if you think you can ambush somebody.

Dodging will be a bit different for you. Watch a Cooller vod to see how it's done at the highest level. There's really not much to say about it. It's more of a feel/reaction/prediction thing. Play a lot and you will see results. Tell your friends to switch over. We need as many players as we can get.

Aim shouldn't be a problem for you considering you have played 1.6 for years and therefore you should already have a decent aim skill. It might take some time to get used to the rl. Lg/rg shouldn't be a problem at all.
From my own experience the biggest problem for a cs player I have faced despite the timing was dodging. It is completely different from 1.6. In the beginning I cought countless rockets with my face :x because I dodged like in 1.6 . Ducking behind a box doesn't save you from a rocket :D. From time to time I still have old 1.6 habits and eat stupid rockets I could have easily dodged.

don't be afraid of the cl_mouseaccel command, give up 1% of your aim and win another 50% movement

Four simple tips:

-Do the simple practice tutorials on the easiest hall right away for strafe jumping and rocket-jumping. The medium difficulty ones should be quite doable as well with a little bit of practice.

-Learn how to dodge in all 4 directions (forwards/backwards and left/right) by combining them.

-Take your time to aim even if it feels like you are about to die. Spending 0.2 seconds extra on placing a rocket can often give you 2-3 times the damage rather than firing wild rockets.

-Learn to predict your opponents dodging pattern and routes.

I wish we had the ability to move OT content/comments in threads to a seperate area. It would clean them up ALOT.

I meant, when comments could be judged as "insightful" and so on. Giving them positive or negative values for spam and so on.

I would suggest an option where an admin can mark a comment tree as OT and the user can have a setting like show OT or hide OT.

I can imagine that wold work quite well.
But I personally would prefer the option to simply minimize a chain with a click. Cause some OT posts are much more fun than others.
