Lacks a " just gimme my money for the remaining months back and close my account " option. I'll be busy crying about the downtime the day they fix whatever causes the game to be so random with the mouse and the drops.
The day it'll be somewhat playable in other words.

The choices are dodgy.. I love the game but dont love the bugs/ downtime ofc.
A free month or something for subscribers would probably be a good move to apology for the probs/downtime.
And ye, what akuma said, to deliver a better support they'd have to put more devs/money into it which doesnt look likely and slows things down. The few that work on it work their ass off tho :/

i understand what you mean, but look what happens when major issues with games avoids people from having a good time. This happened with Age of Conan which is a could have been so great game, but where bugs and issues made people abandon it. They're now screaming for people to come back, just the way quake 4 players are screaming for people to try it again after patching.

It's been proven over and over, that to keep your audience interested in interactive entertainment you must make sure that you avoid big downtimes, bugs etc. or you risk that people no matter how interested and captivated they were at first will end up leaving, and they will not come back regardless of what you do.
Even more important to a company, they certainly won't make the same mistake of paying, twice.

A lot of people connected playing the same game in different instances, while able to communicate with people in other instances is pretty much what makes up an mmo to me :D

I'm rather disappointed by the community than id - you can't find any random premium ctf/freezetag/tdm public's and it makes me sad. I don't want to use irc for every fucking game, waiting graciously 2 hours to gather 8-10 people. I wanna hop in a random server and have fun - but there are none 99% of the time.

I'd love to play CTF, but standard maps are so shit it's beyond Jupiter and there are none random public games on premium/pro - NONE. I'd love to play FT more, but without irc is quite impossible. I'd love to play TDM on better maps (OSPDM5 & OSPDM6 etc.) but then again without irc arranging game is almost impossible.

This community sucks.

Yeah the team killing is absurd, I stopped playing TDM on publics for fun when I was consistently taking more damage from my own team (no exaggeration) than the enemy team. I'd be taking Red on DM6 and getting rocketed by my own team, or I'd have a weapon that some dick wanted and he'd just start pummeling me.

Sad thing is CA is the only public mode I can play without too much hassle, although still people on my own team sometimes chase me around the map rocketing me to fuck up my movement and aim.

I don't mind the downtime. But what really pisses me off is that everytime there is an "update" something that had not to be changed has been changed, such as the input modes. And even inbetween those so-called updates id seems to just make things worse.

I am sure they do that on purpose.

The big problem I think they should not have done are that you need Premium or Pro to be able to play certain maps, the should have only done it for those who will create there own server nothing else...

This is what they had in mind and told us at first. But then they were way too incompetent to fullfil this business plan and also sold themselves to Zenimax. And suddenly they, without any further warning, are charging us for there incompetence.

As much as I love the quake series, I will never support this kind of greedy and ruthless behaviour on people that have always supported id software and their games.

I'm not demanding stuff for free. And I would actually pay more per month for the game they were promising us at first (Quake 3 in a browser). But I already said this early, even if not in this thread.

Cause I never read that, only that there will be a free version available and that there may be subscriptions later on. They never clearly specified what they meant with subscriptions. I also remember reading that would make a game "based on Q3" in a browser and all that.

In any case, if my first line of this comment is crrect, then you are demanding new maps for free in exchange for support.

They never told us that we would have to pay for any maps, just for additional features (i.e. spawning servers), which were the only things they initially planned to charge for.

At first they said that they would just additionally offer premium (pro has never been mentioned) for those who want to spawn there own (read: probably spawned through id) servers.

And now - because of their incompetence to not promote the game properly and to not develop a mature product in over 2 years time - they let us pay for it by charging for everything they could, without risking to loose to much of the already tiny playerbase.

PS: I only demand that they provide us with a proper game that meets all the requirements that an esports game would need and to work together with the community like they once did with quake 4, to improve the game further more.

Right now they are offering:

1. Pro: spawn servers, invite non-subscribers, play new maps, less important stuff

Instead you demand in exchange for your support that they change the offer to something like:

Here you missed out the "without risking to loose to much of the already tiny playerbase"-part. Yeah sure, the substantial part of QL is free, all that was planned to be free. And new maps were also free, see the "6 maps in 6 weeks" stuff. But at that one point they began with charging for anything else: newly added maps, clans, chat tokens (useful or not), the soon-coming advanced scoreboard, Freeze Tag.

Free players are not able to play the newly added maps and so can't participate in the online tourneys that have them in their mappool, so your being forced to buy at least premium. IMO they should offer features for premium that really justify paying for them and let this PRO shit go. PRO is just another way to squeeze more money (actually double the price) out of the cashcows.

also, you still don't seem to get it, so here is an easier example for you:

McDonalds has a special day where they offer drinks for free and also a Big Mac and fries for 4€.
someone comes in takes his free drink and then declares the Big Mac offer is too expensive. He then proposes they should give the fries away for free too, and promises that will really make him consider buying just the Big Mac for 4€.

Allready happened 3 times that our CTF team was ready for a match and quake went down. Annoying when you cancelled stuff/rescheduled etc. only to find out QL is down once again...

But me paying for another year will depend on the scene... No activity = no subscription. When everybody is stil active, I will pay for another year.

I used the support on mIRC recently and i was quite impressed.

In terms of value for money on the other hand, premium/pro is a bad joke. There just isn't enough product differentiation. Either you make the whole thing a paying service that is cheaper for all. (my preferred way) Or you nerf the free service more to encourage more people to pay.

The bottom line is that it is not a lot to pay in the grand scheme of things but it isn't value for money given what is offered for free.

I will not renew my membership unless they visibly improve the game over the year. In particular, more maps and the obvious improvements needed to the netcode which is no better than it ever was.

These subscriptions are only necessary because id has no ability to grow audiences. GTV and leagues/ladders are the way to grow audiences. Audiences do not need to play the game, they just need to watch. When people are speccing, they can see the in-game ads. The same would be true for people speccing through GTV.

Audience-growth and in-game ads - that's the way to keep the community united, while also enabling a profitable business structure. The fact in-game ads allow people to play the game 'for free', means the audience is that much more capable of growing. I'm sure plenty of die-hard Quake/Pro-gaming people would be willing to donate money for the project, and probably in larger quantities than id receives through these 'subscriptions'... that is, they would be willing if they could rely on a legitimate effort to grow the audience and keep the game at peak conditions.

Biggest problem must be that Premium/Pro accounts play on different maps than normal accounts. Change the content of premium/pro and normal accounts, and make them able to play on same servers so we still have a somewhat populated public scene left in QL.

The poll options are bad so I did not vote :)

1. Scrap the current Premium/Pro deals
2. Add GTV and call it Premium
3. Charge $4.99 for Premium
4. $$$

On a more serious note, I can understand why people are complaining about the current plans, splitting up people with maps and mods is bad for the community. I can however understand why they do this, as that is the only content/features they have that people are willing to pay for.

If I were them I would get that GTV shit done asap, add some commentator support to it and then keep the server spawning in premium as well.

By the amount of whine about lack of GTV, I'm guessing there is a market in that feature alone.

I don't know a perfect solution for business and community either :(, and I fear there is none. After all, the problem is similar with releasing a multiplayer demo and then afterwards a retail game. There will alwas be people who stick to the demo.

But from a pure business perspective, I do think id's concept is pretty close to what will earn them the most money.

I guess, unless they go the battlefield heroes way (not that they should). However, more features wouldn't hurt, GTV with commentator-support might at least give some extra subscribers.

yes they could have, but the experiment with quakelive has always been, to have a game that is free to play while still makes money for the producer. Unfortunately, it didn't work out with ads alone, so they went the premium content route.

businesses do experiments all the time, r&d and opening/entering new markets, etc., while still milking their cash cows (Doom 4, Rage).

Look at it like this, if Quakelive had taken off really well and been able to finance itself through ads alone, id would be the front runner of that business concept for games and there could have been chances to sell the finalised concept and infrastructure to other companies.

Unfortunately, it didn't turn out as well as many people had hoped, and on top of that they seem to have delays with their cash cows, so naturally they would pull ressources from their "experiment", which obviously doesn't help with developement.

So, yes of course there were lots of things that could have been done better, but that is very normal for a "first time". Still, I believe on a very basic, strategic decision-making level, the idea to give that concept a shot was and remains good.

Perhaps, it's a shame it wasn't carried out with more developers i suppose, but knowing that they have like no developers on ql they should of just left as a retail game i think personally

Personally the game should just have a retail price and not have a subscription service at all, it's not popular enough to have one. Afaik, there's not many other successful games that have a free to play portion and a pay service part of a game that works.

i can appreciate that id needs to make money to sustain the project, so to get more people playing new maps, they should move towards making said maps a one-off payment, whilst keeping a subscription model for the ability to start and customise your own servers.
