Talking about doubt in this case is pretty silly. Especially talking about whether she's scientific enough or not. She's basically describing a first-hand mystical experience with metaphors borrowed from science. Naturally this can enhance the internal description of what happened. Altough this is not strictly speaking science, that doesn't mean that it's useless information. As Ramachandran and other psychologists using case-studies have shown, individual cases can be a fruitful source for new ideas and insights.

The standard block to say that the hemispheres are not different after all is a misleading debunk of a point that has perhaps been mischaractarized and stretched too far in the popular media. There are case-studies of split-brain patients where this bridge between the hemispheres are severed. As far as I know, each part then behaves independently, and often with contrasting personalities. To claim to know that the difference we can scientifically see between the hemispheres do not in any way potentially add up to what she experienced, seem to me premature.

I certainly don't know of any definite fact that goes against a general statement to the effect that IF you seperated the hemispheres from eachother and IF you were to report the experience of what it is like to be in one of them THEN you'd report something along the lines she did for each of the parts. (disregarding individual differences)

Trying with my little finger to correct myself I gave that first skeptic a chance and read the paper. Notwithstanding the fact that it's from the eighties, which is ridiculous given what the blogger said, the paper really doesn't repudiate a modest descriptive difference between the hemispheres but merely tries to correct the prevalent overblown hype present at the time. More specifically, it repudiates the leap from study of disconnected hemispheres, which do show differences, to the conclusion that we have two minds: this does not follow because the differences do not necessarily persist when they are connected as normal.

However, I would be interesting to see what merit the theory has now, 2010, 30 years later. Hopefully there are some new studies out there which can point out the differences in more detail. It's also likely, or maybe obvious, it seems to me, that whatever differences are found between hemispheres in general, equally or more extreme differences are found within each, and so on. So it's still a matter of what kind of talk is interesting in any case.

That being said, I don't know yet of any theory that is able to correlate the kinds of experiences she talks about to less than crude differences in neuropsychological terms. If our resolution of correlation between brain structure and flow of information, or whatever, is lower than our resolution at which we see differences between the hemispheres, we can't really conclude much yet can we?

In any case, i've bracketed the premise for this whole thing that what that blogger says;

"while the sequence of events might have been somewhat different, she would probably have had the same sorts of experiences had the stroke occurred in the right cerebral hemisphere rather than the left."

Is bullshit taken out his ass. More importantly, I bracketed it out because his fingers point to ends of inquiry rather than finding things out. Quick search on the internet while writing this has found lots of differences, even more than I was already aware of, analogous to what she describes. But even this fact is not enough to support her in a "scientific" way, simply because, she's not talking scientifically.

That being said, I do take issue with her moralizing on the end. But that seems to be a different subject.

think my right hemisphere is pretty much the boss, but due to waking up and going to bed at the right time atm, and because of increased intake of caffeine, my left gets a chance to chip in and omg what do i do

yesterday, i went walking contemplating the existence of everything by a river at 5am, then observed some birds, then went washing clothes, then got something to eat, while watching idiot abroad, then ran around and did pushups, then took a shower, then read for 6 hours straight, then wrote for 1 hour and developed some arguments, then watched some sc2, then played some sc2, then played some keyboard, then watched a movie, then listened to music, then read some fiction and went to bed. inbetween all that, talked to 3 people for at least an hour, chatted with 5 different people on msn, sent some mails, read a few articles, browsed youtube for 30 min, prolly wrote something on esr, downloaded 4 different albums and read about a few artists, then sent music to random people.

usually, i wake up, stare at the wall, eventually take a shower, make some food, browse the internet for 8 hours, then read 30 minutes and give up and watch youtube then go to bed. :D

It's worth noting, if anyone is still reading at this point, lol, that it's likely that similiar sorts of experiences can be caused in a wide variety of ways; as i said within each hemisphere might be wider differences, and surely taking certain types of drugs that effect the whole brain can give us experiences akin to what she describes as right brain.

The question then is what kind of talk we are using. It's often okay to say that semi-metaphorical usage links a meaning by a generalization. For instance we could talk about a feminine man and so on. Surely right and left is an accidental characterization, so if the feature is something like "square" connections in the one and "triangle" connections in the other, then surely this is what is pointed to by the broad generalizing statement.

TL;DR version:

Regardless of validity of link between metaphors of left/right to specific modes of operating, her experiences are claimed to be of two deeply contrasting and distinct kinds that she finds interesting.

These kinds of dichotomies, and abnormal ways of experiencing when certain parts of the brain malfunctions or is pushed in certain ways (drugs, mystic practice, etc.), are widely known.

That in some sense these mystical experiences point to quite natural sub-process of the brain rather than "just" dysfunctional anomality, is a thing worthy of notice.

Even if there are such rough distinctions open to human experience, which I don't think is possible to "disprove" yet as we don't know shit about relation between experience and underlying differences, importing a moral dichotomy into her talk on that shaky ground is worth "killing with fire".

Desputing the facts, or her knowledge of the brain, misses the point because she's too vague, too metaphorical and too popularizing, and because it misses the larger moral claim that is much more worthy of attack.

i did Psychology during my A-Levels and one of the modules I chose to learn was Biological Psychology, including detailed knowledge of the Brain, its cortex's and lobes. She is either over-simplifying facts in order to convey her point to the audience. Next step after all those seminars and books is either starting her own Icke-like cult. (Or jumping on the pseudo-celebrity Buddhism or Christianity).
