Hi guys,

As the title suggests I'm currently hunting for a CRT that will do a minimum of 120hz at 1024x768. I'm totally fed up of my Samsung Syncmaster 226CW with its 38ms input lag.

I owned an Iiyama vision master pro 454 that did 166 hz at that resolution before but if you could post any other models you may know of that do the job please post. I know there are some sonys branded by Dell that might do the job but have no idea of models.

I use a Dell Trinitron 21" (P1130), it does 1024x768 at 120hz, no problem! I think it's the re-branded Sony that you're talking about.

Good thing for me is that I got it as a 'freebie'. Some guy was moving house and wanted rid of it, only had to pick it up! 30kg beast of a thing, great for gaming though. :D

I actually got my iiyama off ebay originally from scotland. Cost a lot more than a freebie at the time but thanks for the tip i hear that a great monitor from reviews.

EDIT: just found one that looks in mint condition for �20 :) 23km away. Could be the one.

yeah the dell trinitrons are pretty much sony diamondtrons afaik(?), i have a P1130 too and it can get up to 180hz@800x600, pretty sweet considering it cost me only �20

iiyama pro vision master 514(22") and 454 (20"?) can both hit the 200 hz @ 800/600, so probably 180 @ 1024

but most of the ones you'll find on ebay/etc will be fairly old and have washed colors and lesser performances.

I think my iiyama is still perfect and its possibly approx 10 years old. But yes I'll ask the seller/giver how the colours are. I think a lot of people are gamers that had these high refresh rate monitors in the first place.

yeah i recently bought one off ebay - the colors are fine but the image is really washed out and i cannot look at it for too long or I get a massive headache! (like 5minutes or so!)

hz is awesome though. it still does 144hz at 800x600 (i had to remove ping #12 though as it would not let me (windows7) override the EDID. Which is, if you did not know, a common problem.

Now I'm still looking for a second one. My primary screen being a dell trinition 19" but it starts to make a really high pitched noise at 120hz (only sometimes though :x)

IBM P275@144hz for 1024x768.
Its basically the same monitor as the dell P1130 which i owned too.
The dell p1230 does it aswell.
They all use sony trinitron.

Own a DELL P991 (rebadged Sony, TRINITRON tubed) and that does 122hz @ 1024*768 and the same at 800*600. Not the best CRT by any means, but for �20, it does the job!

Just check around on ebay, then google the model numbers to find out the max horizontal hz, you remember them after a while too.

Nah, first of all it doesn�t run with 120 Hz in WIn7. I could use the pin removal trick or a custom EDID, but I remembered, that even in Windows XP after a couple of hours the monitor was just unstable in 120 Hz mode causing the system to freeze :/

I can cope atm with 85 Hz :)

I'm checking a local dutch site which is as good as ebay if not better fro this kinda thing, holland is so small collection isnt a big deal usually. I'm collecting the list from all of your guys input and looking for nearest and most decent looking one.

If you can look for a TRINITRON or DIAMONDTRON monitor. The colours and general build on these models are usually a lot more advanced.

Models to look out for are: Dell P991 P1130 Samsung 957MB and the 21" version (make sure it's flat screen)
Iiyama 514/454/510/Other models that are diamond tron

Eizo/Sony/Lacie (electron Blue II)/Compaq/IBM/SUN/Mitshibishi (all usually diamondtron, really nice monitors)/NEC/SAMTRON/Viewsonic

Too lazy to get all model numbers etc, just make sure the screen is flat to ensure it's an older model, hope this helps!

That helped a lot mate, much appreciated. It seems its mostly Iiyamas going here generally for �25 which I think is a good deal as long as the monitor is still managing to get designated refresh rates.

Well I know from first hand experience the iiyama vision master pro 454 is great though a bigger 22inch might be better. a
Apart from 454 the iiyama models 510, 512, 451 (barely does job last resort) are seemingly available on this dutch site i'm using. Viewsonics, lacies etc are unheard of as crts though.

The last crt I bought off ebay was shit (iiyama VM 450) but that sometimes it is really a gamble, I guess.

The one I'm using at home (Dell P992) is superb in 800x600 with 120hz.. Indeed, very smooth and awesome colors but does not support 100hz in 1280x so I am stuck with 100hz on 1152x which makes things kinda huge :P

So yeah, I'm looking forward to this baby. It is going got be my second monitor because I travel a lot between home/my apartment due to work and all, and Id also like to play QL at home :X

do you use w7 and ati? i got this thing hooked up but i cant extend or even show any image on the crt but for a few seconds - it just switches back after like 2 secs.

i deinstalled the ati drivers - it works without a problem but i obviously cant play ql without ati drivers.

so yeah, i assume you have xp?

well, i cannot "install" it properly because w7 does not detect it properly. my iiyama 450 or Dell work fine with w7 and proper hz.

It is the ATI's drivers fault and as of now this won't change because I cannot install windows XP on my laptop.

okay, it works now. i had to remove ping #12 so it would let me do what I want. Fucking w7 is always a bitch.

tell me your colour settings etc. anything I should know. Words look a bit blurry/unsharp.

It is still not as good as my p992 (in terms of sharpness) but that could because it older/had more usage than mine p992 (which I nearly bought new)

I would seriously doubt it....I had trouble buying a crt years ago as it was from a shop. Doesnt win 7 have bad support for CRTs anyway as in having to remove pins to work?

removing the pin still worked for me! w7 has problem with overriding the EDID but with removing ping #12 it works fine. also: this p992 im using here does not even need to get the ping removed - i just installed the monitor drivers and it works. its kinda weird. w7 is a bitch anyway when it comes to monitors!

my QL is perfectly smooth in 100fps 100hz, or 125 fps 100hz. and dont gimme that bs that its clearly not that im too noob to notice. its smooth.

I've been playing the last 2 months on a 120hz CRT screen and I'm now back with my old 100hz one, and I can say it doesn't feel smooth at all in comparison.

some people do not even notice the difference between 60 and 120hz. I feel bad for these people. Seriously, very bad. There is a definite difference between 100 and 120. Case closed. :P

If your monitor can do 120 Hz on a given res it's likely it can do 125 Hz. If the reason you want 120 Hz crt is quake then you might as well get powerstrip or some other software capable of creating custom modes (because 125 Hz can't be used with a simple r_displayrefresh command).

Surely 125 Hz and 125 FPS is better than 125 fps and 120 Hz.

Exactly. It's completely eliminated with vsync though and since 125 fps / 125 hz sync it'll be quite smooth as opposed to lmao 60 hz vsync on LCDs.

So which do I go for the Iiyama vision master pro 514 or Eizo T966?

I can find exact specs on the iiyama and its refresh rates are impressive but im sure the eizos are too.

well compare the stats
if theyre both about equal id say
u take the eizo because those are really quality built and usually super expensive when bought newly

after 3 secs of google it tells me the eizo does 80hz at 2048

to me it seems like the iilyama or whatevr does better with the hertz values. unsurprisingly
id still go with the eizo

I found out that mine does 100hz at 1280x960 which, however; is a resolution that in windows7 is not supported so I had to find a way to force the resolution into it :P

I found a way to edit the registry and let me choose it:

Here my GFX:

CRT is superior technology. 120hz LCD's are blury as shit when playing fps games in comparison.

I own both a highend 22" diamondtron CRT (that barely starts anymore) and a alienware 120hz LCD.

My biggest complaints with 120hz LCD is the terribad viewing angles, 16:9 aspect ratio and inferior image quality.

It is now a time that you can get the best crt almost for free.

I would chose no bigger then 21", preferably 19" because else you will need a gigantic desk and muscles like cooller to lift it :p

Nope if you go for high refresh rate on highest resolution get the 454 model.

Vision Master Pro 451

Vision Master Pro 454

Yes, with a high resolution, the feeling is different because you are able to move across more pixels (can really be noticed on small moves), but some people still prefer low resolutions because they feel it more reactive.

Also, be careful that your mouse has enough dpi for the resolution you want : http://www.phoon.us/mouse/

And I'd go with the crt. Cheaper and better ^^ (if you have enough space).

Well, i can tell that any LCD will always be blurrier than a CRT. They best have 2ms response time (without even mention input lag), while CRTs have 0ms and 0 input lag. The only thing that would make you prefer a LCD over a CRT is the space taken.

And for your question, I don't think so. It's only good for gamers or graphic designers that can't afford a good LCD, and it's just a matter of time before OLED show up. When they will, it will be the end of good old trusty CRTs :'(

You better get one before it's too late.

I was about to buy one of the CRT's, then I noticed that it is a B-grade unit. I.e. it has been repaired.

I think I'll pass on it and save the pennies for a LCD hehe, seems like the days of the CRT may be coming to an end

As the owner of two second hand 21 inch flatscreen CRTs I suggest you take the plunge. Mine are both around 10 years old and still going strong. I would recommend the Trinitrons especially.

I found the latest version of Powerstrip works nicely for my CRTs (got three now) in Windows 7. I couldn't find any other way to force the refresh rates I was after.

Just got a brand new(!) 22" Vision Master Pro 512 and a brand new(!) 19" Medion MD 1998. Finally all this trouble with lcds ends: no vsync / tearing shit no inputlag and superior image quality. And i think this is the way it should be. Grab yourself a crt while you can, lcds are just crap vs crt when it comes to gaming on higher quality.

i've a iiyama HM204D DT which could do 200hz but only @ 800x600 or lower, its even possible to use 240hz @ 460x680 xD
1024x768 @ 150hz seems to fit the best for me (1152x864 @ 150hz is also possible)
