Tonight at 19:00 CDT, QuakeLive.TV presents the National ESL Qualifying Cup #5, in which the top two players will qualify for the group stages (16 players) leading up the the Grand Final being held at this year's New York ComicCon.

Among tonight's talents are literal Quake legends

ZeRo4,

czm,

LoSt_CaUzE, and

vo0. Additionally, up and coming players

Ziel will be battling to earn the final spot in the sweet 16 by acquiring cup points.

If fatal1ty stops playing CA and starts dueling, and ZeRo4 and toxjq start playing in tournaments, and czm starts playing for serious, and 1057 keep practicing, and Vo0 continues playing, and rapha gets out of his slump, and Cooller and Cypher play, and fox gets back to duelling, then LakermaN will come back.

Quake live is not Quake 3.

Zero4 and CZM struggle to take down opponents like rey and fiend. They may be legends, champions, whatever, but they need to prove it in Quake Live.

You can tell his config was fucked, he shot too low and too high with rockets a lot of times, like fucking 50 times. This is why he was trying to hit rails instead of using rockets, and continued to miss. :\

It's weird. I don't want to make excuses and say "oh, it's ping/config/whatever" but it really looked like he was using weird settings because his movement and aim was just weird. Certainly not as comfortable or the same movement as he was in the old days nor like any other players. You can put that down to being rusty or whatever, but he looked the same in the FFA demo I posted a bit back and he has been practicing... but I dunno

Obviously I have. This is all subjective but I feel relative to his hitscan his RL is worse. Relative to players with good RL his RL is worse.

But hey, I can be wrong. I've never played the guy, but I've seen plenty of him in action.

If we are generally speaking here, then sure, he's got a fantastic RL, but it is not his standout ability. It's self evident that all top players can play Quake 3 competently, but it is against their peers that I have judged.

First this is about czm and his first tournament in what 1-2years? After only playing about 2 weeks leading up to this event. That being said he did very well his timing was spot on it was his aim and movement that were off which will come back soon enough if he does continue with ql.

obviously czm is going to suck at aiming/moving when he hasn't played in 2 years...of course he will lose to these guys who rail/lg whore and play hours and hours a week for the past couple years. I'll be 30 in a couple of months, and using a MS 3.0 @ 500hz + 120hz CRT + Sens 3.5 in game, no accel, I can aim better than most non-pro's. I suck at timing and thinking and stuff, though, so I try to stick with FFA, where I can win all the time.

I'd say with Quake we don't really know when age becomes a limiting factor because it's fairly new and very few people try to stay at the top at a higher age. I know they are different sports and all but we see people very competitive at ages nearing 40 in car racing (formula one), archery and even ice hockey which is a sport that I'd say is more dependent on the physical than those others I have mentioned. Now, I'm not sure there is a sport where reaction time is as much of a factor so that might be something that becomes limiting but other than that it seems to me that sports that are mostly based on skill are ones that people can excel at even at higher ages.

Sure my aim was a bit odd when I took a break from quake for a year back when cpma came, but only took 3-4 matches to get back.

But as far as I can tell czm has been going at it for over two weeks it still doesnt look to impressive.
But then again, someone said he played on a labtop.. that would account for everything, because it's fucking crap to play on one :>

If I can't make it through group stage, why do you think czm would be able to?

I'm agreeing with everyone else that if CZM was aiming better he most likely would have beaten me, but that doesn't change the fact he would still get rolled by the pro players...1.5 weeks is not enough to get in shape. ESPECIALLY on maps, I'm assuming, CZM has very little experience on (hektik, t7 mostly).

I have nothing but respect for CZM and I know his legendary status...I still remember watching him play against ZeRo4 in a quakecon tournament back when I was around 13.

So essentially, I can understand if people are upset or disappointed.
