w810i is the best. you can get that + an ipod touch for £150...combined they do everything an iphone does except you get to spend £400 elsewhere

Try to pay attention to speed, 500mhz these days just doesn't cut it. Look for something higher.

Of course, if you're one of those FUN people who likes to have FUN with their phone, then I guess iPhone is your destination.

Although, I have a G1 and I can play Sonic 3 and other games through emulators using the tactile keyboard on my phone. Now that's fun :)

I second this, android by far is the best mobile OS at the moment + great build quality phones are coming out (droid 2 / htc desire etc). I have been using droid incredible for past 3 months and its a great phone.

also i know it was mentioned earlier and apple is a piece of shit but i found an iphone 4 (sick feeling) and after u jailbreak it and get installous u can get every app for free so its pretty sweet

HTC Desire
Samsung Galaxy

I think out of those the iphone 4 and HTC Desire are out in the lead, just not sure which to go for.

I've got an iPhone 4 so I can give you some positives/negatives, maybe someone else could that's got a HTC.

+Excellent screen
+OS (and updates etc)
+Apps
+Camera/Video finally decent
+Thin (even with free apple bumper)
+Free apple bumper :)
+iPod + Nike+
+Very speedy (1ghz cpu)
+Best Touch screen

-More Expensive
-Signal (get a free bumper, works wonders and feels 1000 times better in your hand)
-Camera not as good as some other phones
-Apple.. (itunes etc)
-Can't think of any others.

Max clock speed of the CPU is 1ghz, which is it in the iPad but I don't believe it is at max in the iPhone 4.

+Can use the led when shooting video (2.2 required)
+FriendStream app/widget is nice if you're a twatter/fakebook whore
+Link contact data from Facebook/Google : didn't have to manually set pictures or email for everyone \o/
+Exchange support
+Snappy performance, even more so since the 2.2 Froyo update from a week ago (availability not guaranteed, varies from carrier to carrier. you may have to wait or even be fucked and never get it, but there are workarounds).
+Apps for most everything you need on the market
+Relatively fine grained app privileges, shown when installing from the market.
+GPS + Google maps and/or Google navigation = win
+microUSB connexion
+USB tethering
+Wifi hotspot (2.2)

-The screen is hard to read in bright sunlight. If that is a concern, get a matte screen protector if you can find one.
-Not enough applications can be moved from the limited internal memory to SD as of yet. That's a general issue with the plaform though, not that specific phone. It'll get better, in the meantime don't install too much shit
-No EQ whatsoever in the default media player (get MixZing on the market)
-No gapless playback with the default media player (or most of the alternative options on the market).
-Slight background hiss when playing music. You will hardly notice outdoors and/or without in-ear earplugs though.
-The provided handsfree kit has mediocre sound quality.
-Doesn't play divx etc... get RockPlayer on the market for that
-Slightly longer than a 3g jesusPhone.

I dont know, but stay away from Sony Ericsson... I bought one and then it was all crap, would turn off when you plugged in the charger and sometimes just randomly die. After 2 days i got a call and that meant the telephone just died, had lights in the keyboard, but couldnt be turned on, removing battery didnt work. Returned it and got a C510 Sony Ericsson instead, and guess what, its the same bullshit. Turns off every now and then and often happens when you try to charge it.

Worst quality phones i have ever seen.
