Radiohead basically did this first, even if it was a "Pay What You Want" thing.
Actually there may have been others even before that, but I dunno of any off the top of my head.

well, I do know some friends of mine did it with their band, and I think they were one of the first to release an album under the "Creative Commons" license, as they did it in 2005. They say they were the very first with a professionally produced album, I don't know about that, though.
