I broke ESR :). I don't even have to say anything anymore.

To those that are not part of the weird undergound cult I once made the mistake of saying I worked with videogames, won a bafta and earned a lot of money via royalites and then I said I went out to run my own businesses. As you do on any sort of forum over time when talking about your life.

Basically, to normal functional people this is seen as an achievment, but in a demographic where many of the people failed to turn their hobby into something more and are bound by a combination of social deprivation, sexual frustration, boredom, too much time on their hands, no money, long term unemplyement (by large due to playing too many games) and undiagnosed personality disorders, its a big fcuking deal as such people are not really used to hearing success stories.

The only way some of them can deal with it is by denying the thing that makes them feel that way. Hence "Sup with the jamerio threads" as do you notice they all pretty much go the same way and are about the same thing? They might stand a chance of success if they were a bit more subtle with it :)

Some of them are getting sneaky, they've now resorted to trying to bomb the threads with what I think I will say in response before I actually say so, so even if I say something that is true and accurate and perfectly reasonable in response, they think that IF I say what they predicted I will say, it will invalidate it. (didn't see that one coming did you jerk off's why not add it to your automatic list of responses and use it for tomorrow's mid life crisis)!

i didn't say they don't give you attention/mock you, they just don't 'care' about the fact that you have worked as a game tester, alot of ppl have and its nothing special but you seem to think it is and will desperately argue about how great that fact is and how everyone ells who hasn't worked on a game is a looser.

I need something like that.

I'm looking for a site very similar to a "property for sale" site, something which I can stay in charge of though. Obviosuly I'm talking database driven, pref MySQL/php.

I spoken to people like Ektron etc but they all want silly money and want to host it themselves. I don't like that.

Are there simple off the shelf options available?
A lot of the fields structure I would need are pretty much already there in these sites.

I.E. location/price/upload photos etc.

Something like a PHPBB3 forum in terms of automatic, but for property sales would be awesome. If you can make that, you would be rich.

Then again I guess its not in your interest to make it easy for people to do what you're paid to do. So many things are becoming automated though. It getting scary. I know people who do similar for insurance companies and they charge insane money.

I've never done that myself, i only worked for O2... It pretty much turned into an apple store, even our polices became similar. We even had a "genius". I would never even think of working at a company with the uniform you described. Those guys are agressive cunts.

With regards to working for a CCTV company, we're only a supplier. We just import the equipment. Thats all.

I visited PwC Polish headquarters once and I must admit they got pretty awesome working conditions. But I also heard that even though they earn a lot in B4, they have to work really much (a lot of overtime hours).

Huge spreads,low price movement ,its a backed by the dollar but is probably the most manipulated currency in the world :)

I trade the yen pairs, gbp/jpy is my favorite then eu/jyp chf/jpy aud/jpy

china will do whatever they want because they own you fuckers.

that probably means keeping USD/Yuan rate stable while strengthening USD against everything else (AUD possibly being exception due to high rates and lot of commodities). not good for US exports but they have to protect the 2.5 tril investment by not allowing you to devaluate $.

it is nice to hear the populist cries about revaluing Yuan but China has been keeping it pegged by buying US Treasuries. if they stop, there is no way you can keep financing your own debt. it is either strong dollar or armaggeddon and both are not very good for America.

And if China starts having problems (like most analysts predict they will if they continue letting their economy explode), they're going to have to float their currency or risk even more arbitrage opportunities (which is already plundering wealth from them). And if it does start floating, the US will gain much, much more than lose since our trade deficit will rapidly reduce and more importantly drive the jobs market.

Funny to see a Euro these days talk about debt problems. By the way, welcome to the club, bud.

What's more interesting to me is that while the US and most of Asia is growing, the EU continues to have problems (not limited to just Greece, Spain, and Italy but a fundamental problem in banking/financial sectors). Wondering how long the EU will continue to rumble in poor economic times while the rest of the world moves on...

25% U6? Wtf? Where are you getting this figure? BLS has 7.9 million for marginally/discouraged/economic reasons for this time last year (that's less than 3 percent). The current unemployment rate is 9.7. Dunno how you're adding 3 + 9.7 = 25%. You must be adding in all the illegal immigrants. =)

And China holds euro dollars for the exclusive reason that they do vast amounts of trade with the US. In makes sense that when the US buys Chinese goods they give them US$, not Yuan -- this means nothing more than a holding position and nothing about "ownership" since there's not service being paid on how much US$ they want to hold. Moreover, euro dollars are everywhere because the dollar has been more stable and safe than any other currency. Some smart people are particular about what currency they invest their money in.

The same could be said of T-bills which is why yields are so low on T-Bills compared to ANY commercial notes. US debt is cheap for the US and safe for investors. If you had $100 billion, would you want to put that in volatile equities? Which is the reason why short-term T-bill yields are still insanely low.

Cheap debt can't be said for some European nations.

If every $1 of US economic activity is generating the US government ~$0.33 (the traditional rule of thumb) the idea of ARRA or stimulus money(which I think you were probably more accurate in thinking about this in your critique than TARP) is to build confidence which is afterall the main lifeforce of any market economy.

I have similar sentiments though about our low interest rate policies which I think have played a large part in getting to where the US economy is today.

But I can give you the "stable": a stable decline.

Yeah, the Euro was probably overvalued in the end of last year, but it took some heavy attacks + Greece to drop down to where it is now: 30% above what it used to be in 2000.

The same you say for the Euro the same you could say for the Dollar. It's how the market is valuing it (which is the confidence), but whether the market is undervaluing it or overvaluing it is the big difference.

And I think another important value to consider besides the exchange rate (though this plays a massive role in investments) is the PPP of the dollar which has always shown the US as a strong value. The same goods in the US cost relatively cheaper than in other countries which is itself a sign of the strength of the US market but also the dollar itself.

Yes, the PPP is important, but I don't really see your reasoning there. When you can't buy much for your dollars in countries all over the world, you can't use that as an argument for a strong currency. If anything the opposite is true. I can buy more stuff for my euros in the US now than ten years ago. One Euro today is valued more than it used to. Hence, it is the stronger currency.

PPP is reflective of the health (internal/non-foreign-trade) of an economy. If a person in Nation Y can buy 2 widgets with 1Y, and a person in Nation X can buy 1 widget with 3X, and an exchange rate exists of 2X/Y, then there's clearly an imbalance that can be caused by many factors (one of which is government welfare programs which is evident in countries like Sweden and the UK where the PPP is notably lower than the US$).

The idea, then, is a long-term perspective of the "relative" strength of a currency not inflated or deflated by exchange rates.

My point is that a lot of what foreign exchange rates trade at is less about the actual (relative) strength of a currency and more the confidence investors have in that currency.

Would you say that the Euro is somehow intrinsically/fundamentally less valuable today than it was yesterday because it dropped over confidence fears regarding Greece? More people are moving out of euro denominated investments, but it doesn't reflect necessarily reflect the intrinsic, long-term value of the currency.

When there's these statements about how a nation's economy is based on their exchange rates, it misses a HUGE aspect of the actual economy. While some countries appear to have higher GDP per capita, this ends up being an illusion because goods/services are more expensive domestically.

I think this is the reason that the IMF/World Bank studies sovereign stability/health not based on exchange rates but instead on an "international dollar" basis.

actually I am convinced the main reason for the Euro dropping this fast in the apst weeks is a coordinated attack by hedgefonds in the US who saw a possibility to earn a lot of money.
Yes, Greece's mistakes are the reason why there is that possiblity, but the hedgefonds don't care if they damage the economy in the long run. The just want to make the crisis as bad as possible right now, so they can profit the most.
This is a bad side-effect of having the biggest financial players and the rating companies all in one place with the additional problem that the rating firms get financed by those players.

That said, I personally do believe the current exchange rate to be pretty accurate. Just the way the decend happened was way too fast.
But the rate will help Germany's and the EU's import/export ratio a lot, so it's not all bad!

That's how the market works.

My point is that there's a difference between reality and perception. A HUGE part of the market value is confidence. It's very superficial (which is usually the quality of ESR user observations) for someone to look at an exchange rate or stock price and make a determination of the intrinsic value of that currency/stock.

The famous "long" players -- like Warren Buffett and George Soros -- who understand that confidence is just volatility and they don't look at rates/prices to see where it'll be tomorrow. They look at it as "where will it be in five years? ten years?"

Somewhere there's some objective picture of what's happening in the US and Europe but its definitely not written in exchange rates and not in stock prices or T-bill rates because the average day trader would be as rich as Warren Buffet if this was the case.

you are right that one cannot tell the stability of a currency simply by the exchange right, but I still think it is an indicator. For example, if the exchange rate keeps crashing down over a long period, noone would call the currency stable.

and the dollars has not been the most stable currency in the last decade. But you can trust that it won't default because of the large industry and banks behind it. Which is maybe what you meant with "safe"?

But as an investment, betting on something that showed a steady decline over a longer period (at least form the European view) can not be a safe investment.

Investors these days are better off speculating about policy changes though (since there's much more of those these days). I was speaking more on policy rather than investing opinions (this climate like you mentioned in a previous post is all about being short - especially on European banks this past week). Policies are being discussed more these days than before due to the nature of the market -- what can be changed in the fundamentals. Seems Larry Kudlow and even Jim Crammer take much more time to speak on policy issues these days rather than the numbers. Particularly about Chinese ownership of American debt and what that means for the future.

I dunno if you read a lot of non-fiction but I'm finishing up Andrew Ross Sorkin's "Too Big To Fail" which is very nice exposition on the economic failures in the US in 2007. A good portion of the book deals directly with Lehman Brothers and Dick Fuld's frantic pronouncements about shorting conspiracies against his company. In any other market shorts aren't a spotlight except for cues for investors but the drop starting in 2007 is much more a whole series of systematic (and policy) issues that led to our current state which was a feeding frenzy for a lot of gleeful hedge fund managers. This is something that should be resonating with EU citizens today.

USA fucks over the random joe while telling him to live the american dream but has a few super-rich getting even richer on the other hand, and Asia is pretty much all catch-up economies who can create high growth rates for obvious reasons (technological transfer, people entering industry coming from agriculture, foreign investment, shitty conditions and wages, ...). Last time I checked Africa and South America were busy starving/getting exploited, so I guess it's not them advancing either.

haha so you guys did those promos for cartoon network. we were watching them in the studio yesterday and were very impressed. great stuff.

i got into this industry rather recently. i was more into live action directing / shooting but i see a lot of opportunity for my ideas and style of thinking here.

yup it's a TV series... rather high budget I'd say. most of those shots are old so the overall quality has
improved now but there's still a lot of room for improvement (as is with anyone in animation in general. love that you always have to be learning)

i'll ask them in the morning and get back to you. it was mostly about the rendering though. would you have knowledge on that or was it done by someone else?

You might aswell have just stuck with Mental Ray and saved yourself a crap load of time on paying render farms as the benefits of maxwell only come with more advanced lighting setups. None of which were evident in those scenes for the reasons I'm talking about.

Don't get me wrong, I think for what it is its really good, but you need to realise that rendering is the final output, no matter what you animate the bottom is that you need clean frames and that will always be such a big deal when using maxwell, not only will it constrain what jobs you can accept as a studio, but what you do as an animator as you're reliant on what the modeler has done done with the scene. And he's gonna be limited by lighting setups.
in fact, don't expect to render any interiors anytime soon.

That's why I said you are constrained, you're all about frames as a profession, but your renderer is the slowest on the market which will have a big imapact on the work flow.

It has its usues, but the irony is the uses the renderer could have brought to your workflow were lost in this scene, because you were not have been able to render the frames out.

Anyway GL, it looked good, but I just think if that logic is a precedent you're going to run into problems further down the line when the clients needs do not fit in with your rendering logic.

yeah we might not have used all of Maxwell potential but it was our first project whit it and it was much about learning for future projects aswell.

as far as rendering farms goes, that's not a problem for us, we have plenty =)
and we are not limited to only accept projects that fits Maxwell since we can use Mentalray as well.
and that I'm constrained as a animator because of what the modeler do and so forth i don't understand at all, the amount weird screwed up poses we do in our animation should be evidence enough that that's not the case =)

anyway, i wont argue whit you, we are doing our next promo right now where we definitely are using Maxwells full potential, keep an eye on our site =)

There are over 30 people in the credits for less than a minutes worth of footage and its nearly a year since you last posted.

IMO that's insane amount of resources considering there are only two characters and virtually no background. I realise that not all of those people have been working for all of that time, but you have to admit its a lot of resources for what it is.

Conclusion: AAA+ work and you've carved out a style and look for yourselves, but with that many people and timeline it could not have been anything else.

P.S.
I know you'll never tell, but I would LOVE to know how much you charged them for that work and how much it cost you as a studio in wages:)

thx for you surprisingly kind words , i don't know how u manage to count 30 different ppl, if you look closely you will see that alot of ppl are credited multiply times.
we hired 'ljud labbet' to do the music so they had nothing whit the actual 3D, we where actually 4 ppl working full time the rest where ppl doing cloth sim or fluids sim ect. for short periods, others where simply contact persons at Cartoon network, ppl who helped to technical support for free when it was needed or simply ppl who gave us good feedback on test versions.
it might look like we are a company whit 600ppl in it but in reality we are just 4 ppl, its just alot of ppl worked for short periods and we always credit everyone even if they only worked on it for a day.

as for the time, as you probably know the client makes the decision when we are allowed release something on the web.

I'm currently attending the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan as a computer art major, we often look to your studio's work for inspiration. If I'm not mistaken we had an alumni freelancing/working at meinbender who ended up coming back to give a presentation on some of your older cartoon network stuff last year.

The background was mostlyblack/white this time and was entirely exterior based so ambient lighting was as I said rife.

I'm saying that 11 months ago I said maxwell render would probably prove limiting in two areas and 11 months on the animation was based around both those limitations.

You didn't have any interior scenes and the lighting used was mainly ambient I .E. fast to render and suitable for outdoor but not much else. I just think that's a pretty big coincidence given the scope of most animations,and that both those CN hae adhered to those rules.

I was just wondering if you guys base yor work around the crazy render times or whether you geniunely would have done that animation as it was if render time/noise was not an issue?

Not that it matters because you can obviously produce good work around those limitations, but if cartoon networld said ok we want the same animation inside a wizards den or something can you still produde those 60 second animations at suitable quality?

Yeah you are right, the scene where the parrot was inside canon was heavier to render then the other ones but generally the render times was never a problem since we have a pretty big renderfarm and maxwell 2.0 is alot quicker then 1.7.

when i said we where going to use maxwell to its full potentional i just merely meant its was not going to be just a simple character on a white ground this time but an actual scenery whit more detailed characters and lighting/textures.
and no we have never planned our projects on the premise that we must do outdoor (or anything like that) because its easier for maxwell, something like that has never even been brought up.

the next 'big' thing we are planning/trying to get going will have both interior and out door so i guess that will be the big test then for maxwell.

making my body look better.. when was doing bb then i was 105kg.. then 1.5years did no train.. last month was 94kg.. now on diet and im 88kg and started this week to train again.. goal is to make 80kg and with every year to make better quality on this 80kg.. im 175cm ))) some muscles r saved from traing when i was doing it and eating some stuff )))) also all is good )))))

Spent about a month down in Swansea for my training, stayed in Neath just up the road tbh it's not as bad as people make out. Some top people & we were around for the surfer festival. And yeah that place is huge - the volume going out each day is impressive. We're about 2/3 the size but still a sizeable place - couple of million in stock. Opened last year Swansea is fairly established in comparison.

Trance all the items sent out are constanting being received from vendors / stowed into a location / picked / packed / shipped all in a physical space! We're the back office to the website - a massive much more efficient Argos if you will.

Our course is a bit weird, we don't specialize until 4th year, where most courses here do this at the start of 3rd year.

When I signed up for this degree I was very interested in microelectronics, but the way it's taught here has really put me off specializing in that area in this degree program.

Analogue electronics and power engineering are extremely well taught here; so atm I intend to specialize in power engineering and more specifically power electronics. It's getting to the point where thyristors have had their day and more complex MOSFET based power control systems are beginning to take over.

Power engineering is also a better career choice for the UK atm, as in order to produce renewable energy the UK's main sources are wind and wave power off the west coast. However, atm all the trunk/main power lines are along the east coast; so a huge amount of infrastructure has to be built in order to match the demands which the energy boards are legally forcing the power companies to provide. There will be a lot of jobs in this area in the next few years :)

I envy that you are specializing in control; that particular area is the major weakness of my course, it is barely taught at all. They are heavily funded by wolfson and other analogue cmos companies, this uni very, very much focus on analogue electronics and CMOS research (even has its own small-scale FAB :) )

Electronics is a very cool place to be in; so much rapid development and progress! :)

So how do your shifts etc work? 8 or 12 hour shifts I guess? Also, how many months are you on the ship, and how many for leave etc? Just curious :)

What do you do for recreation aboard the ship? Is there anything like ping pong etc, or just a whole lot of book reading?

If we are not on sea we work from 8 till 16:45, on sea i have day shifts its from 7:30 till 16:30. but other people can have diffrent shifts,
8:00 - 12:00 / 20:00 - 00:00, 12:00 - 16:00 / 00:00 - 4:00, 16:00 - 20:00 / 4:00 - 8:00..

if we are in the netherlands i can go home everyday if i want too but i live too far from the base so i stay and go home every weekend.

now the longest periods from home are 4 months, but the longest trip for me wos 7 months from home.

on the ship u can read, watch tv / dvd, we have a network with alot of movies and series and we can play games against each other.. now we are playing COD.

navy is fun when ur young u see alot of the world, now there is no challenge for me any more, i'm planning to leave in a couple of years..

a few years ago their average salary was 3000rmb/month which is �300 which is significantly more than $60/month. rent in an ok place = �100-200/month...even with really shit wages (factories etc) they get > �90/month and with these jobs they always have housing & food covered (normally some crap on site place shared with 4-6 other workers but its still extra bills they dont have to pay)

well i dont live in .de but most chinese ive met here plan to return after their studies...only 3 ive known have tried to stay after to work here.

they study abroad because unless you get into the top 2 unis in beijing then experience in a foreign country studying looks good (improved english/english/american unis are viewed highly). a bunch others just dont want to take the the entrance exams required for chinese unis which are hardcore & there aint actually enough spaces at their decent unis to meet demand.

phd = chinese see their unis as being bad for research

you can just as easily ask why these english teaching weirdos work in china for 10+ years despite the fact that theres no career progress so theyre on the same wage as someone there on a 1 year contract with no degree

the english teachers in china are in china, because they don't get a job with a literature degree in their respective countrys, and it's not really their qualification of the studies that brought them there, they are mostly only lucky to be native speakers of english ...
sometimes I think of going to Shanghai, but since everyone seems to be able speak english there, I don't know if it's really worth it ... I see many people in france who study in english, but can't speak a single word french ... and since their studies are in english they don't really learn french ... guess would be the same for me ... I wouldn't learn mandarin there, it's probably not worth it ... better to go to a country where the language is really native english ... but probably I won't go abroad for studying in another country, france is already enough I guess :-), but china remains still interesting to me ...

the chinese youve met are middle/upper class and have had a particular interest in learning foreign languages (which is why theyre in x country)...many will have done cram/random extra english lessons outside of school. theyve probably even done an intro year in the country to improve on english.

some of the students here studying IELTS (they do 3 years in china learning english & 1 here...either 3rd or final year) have quite bad english...you can still communicate with them on basic stuff (which id have no chance with in mandarin) but you couldnt call them fluent. and these are the well-off & enthusiastic ones...many more do nothing more than minimum school stuff which often contains unqualified foreigners with lessons like watching friends...a lot pay no attention with the lessons either since its not something theyre interested in

i went to china in 2008 and while trying to come back home AT THE AIRPORT the coach drivers could not tell me what coach i have to catch to get to the international airport (i just left the regional)..."terminal 3" was too much for them

why would you want to go to SH? worst place in china...its basically just a poor mans new york and full of foreigners...not chinese at all...they dont even have tourist attractions (although talks of a disney land~)

its like the only city ive said i dont want to visit =P

i love beijing. the sun is quite punishing (especially at tourist sites because theyre all huge open spaces with no shade) but theres so many cool sites...you can even swim in the olympics pool for �5 but it was closed the day i went for military stuff =(
i havent been to nanjing but i want to/will =)

neither is in my top 4 cities to visit though

edit: for a chinese to study in the uk it costs �12,000 per year for the course then housing/living costs so probably like �20,000 per year. I assume germany (although probably not as high) will be pretty expensive too =x so yea...quite likely theyre middleclass or higher since scholarships are limited =]

in my cs class in a french university, there are many non-eu students and they only pay the 250 Euro normal fee for one year studying, that's all ... I think it's the same for germany ...

research is boring...just like any other work when you feel you dont have to do it

for example ive had my dissertation open all day but still havent touched my evaluation (youtube/match of the day/fuck knows where the rest of the time went) because work is boring

quite a few lectures, dissertations to mark... research =[

s'all about "moulding/inspiring" young minds

not much money for lecturing at uni, hard to get a place there too ...
u know, everyone's studying nowadays, it's only a matter of time until the whole system will crash ... and there will be way too many students, if there are not already ... it's not anymore the same as maybe 100 years ago, where being studied really meant something ... and with your degree you are lost outside the academic world ...
but of course one guy among 10 or 20 gets to be the lecturer ...
maybe you make it, otherwise I'd say cu @ mcdonalds ...
