Don't get the G500, I have both the MX518 and G500 and the MX518 blows G500 out of the water in every area. Yes MX518 has prediction, but the G500 has problems graver then that.

The biggest problem with the G500 is its weight, even without weights it weighs above 150 grams which is alot. Whats worse is that ALL the weight is in the front, it barely weighs anything in the back which feels terrible. It also has tracking issues at high speeds (specifically incostencies related to acceleration)
Being a laser mouse, its also very imprecise when you move it very (very very) slowly, which makes it a very poor choice if your planning to do photoshop with it.

So do you know the weight without cord and without the additional weights added? I couldn't find anything.

I was so surprised because seemingly they made such an effort only to overlook one of the most important aspects which is a reasonable weight ^^

dunno, I read somewhere something about 108-112g and somewhere else ~120g just like the G5

if you open it and take out the whole weight tuning system (not just the weights) it gets pretty light weight but the balance totally gets fucked up

I would stick with the mx518.. I don't know about the g500, but laser mice are crap for gaming.. (excluding the two good ones i cant remember the names of, xai and g900x?)

The first generation laser sensors might have been crap for gaming, but these new ones surpass optical in every way.

To be honest, the G500 has obsoleted the 518. I have them both and once I used the G500 I will never go back. The G500 has little tweaks here and there that makes it an improvement over the 518 in every way.

You can turn mouse correction off and lift-off distance is practically non-existent. It defaults to 500 hz. You can save dpi and other settings on the mouse. With the 518, if you wanted to use 1800 dpi you would either have to hit the '+' button each time you logged in or have setpoint installed.

The materials are better. With the 518, you had to clean the grime buildup on the surface of the mouse mouse every day. I have yet to have to clean my G500. Scroll wheel is better. The shape of the mouse has been refined. The ledge under the thumb extends out more. I find it to be more comfortable.

In short, it is the successor to the 518. The 518 is very dated compared to this.

Yes, it is a little heaver but you get used to it. The balance feels fine. And I have never had trouble with tracking.

"the balance feels fine"? are you crazy? it has ALL the weight in the front, and NOTHING in the back. because they wanted to fit that stupid ass weight system so they couldnt put anything else in the back (ive opened it up and looked inside)

I never had a problem with 'grime' on my 518, I keep my hands clean though. I don't think the 518 is 'dated' by any current mouse, and its 107 grams is just undeniably lighter than the g500's 150+. Weight adds to friction and imo, is not good.

If you like the g500 better for comfort reasons, or because the prediction is a really big deal for you then by all means use it. I wouldn't say it is objectively a 'better' mouse though.

I have both. I prefer the 518 due to a more common sensor placement, weight of the mouse and a better wheel that;s easy to just scroll i tick at a time without doing 2 or 3.

Plus the g500 rattles inside, which is rather annoying.

The G500 looks better in my opinion though and its main buttons "feel" better.

g500 has positive accel built in the sensor. this is it's biggest flaw.

All new mice with that sensor have _slight_ pos. accel, that didn't stop many pro's from using it (xai namely).

I don't see the big fuss about slight pos-accel. I honestly can't notice it. I use a very low sensitivity so maybe that's it (or visa versa), but the Xai's sensor is absolutely fine for me.

you've not been playing quake for that long, right? i think it's very noticeable yet i still like the xai.

i don't care about pros. i know that my g9x sucks for me and it's because of the sensor.

^Sure if you are very sensible about perfect pointer translation it's best to stay away from these new mice.

I have the mx518 and its been shutting off and on when I'm playing Quakelive, real frustrating. I love the shape of the 518, I just don't know where I would go from here. I've never used a laser so I don't know.

You have a damaged cable. Prolly u have a sharp table edge or something.

Either get a 5$ logi mouse and swap cables, or get a warranty replacement.

I think I'll ask someone to land me a mouse for couple of days (g500) just to see how much is that weight really heave while doing normal trolling and perhaps try it out with really low sens ect. Btw. Since I bought my mx518 while it was still 1600dpi maximum i never switched it to lower because I didn't need it so I'm more of a med-high sensitivty user.

I highly recommend trying 400 dpi on the 518 (adjust sens to compensate). It tracked substantially better for me at 400 than 800 or 1600. Would use 800 in windows though. Of course this is without the drivers, should be using ms drivers setting 6 anyways...

I have it for 6 years....you truly think I didn't try that? It's just too slow for me.

yep, @400dpi (WITHOUT setpoint!) it performs the same as overclocked mx500 reaching 4m/s perfect control

I've used mx518 with 1600cpi and 1 ingame sens in IDTECH3 games. I tried 400cpi with 4 ingame sens and it makes you turn slightly slower, any idea why's that? I shouldn't have any accels (xp, fixes)), basic 6/11 windows sens, etc. Also it feels otherwise really different with 1600cpi vs 400cpi, the first one feels alot smoother even if it hits some negative acceleration in ET (despite 1680x1050 resolution). Oh and the sens results in some 25cm/360 vs 29cm/360 or so.

I have almost the exact opposite experience. At 800 and 1600 cpi it appeared to have some weird positive acceleration that is hard to describe. At 400 cpi the tracking was dead on.

I'm not sure what you mean about the cm/360. If for example you use 0 mouseaccel, microsoft hid drivers at setting 6, and an in-game sensitivity of 4 at 800 cpi, it should be made 8 at 400 cpi, and 2 at 1600 cpi for comparison testing.

The cm/360 means how many centimeters it takes for a full turn (tried turning slowly, thus any possible accels shouldn't kick in anyways). Yes, the ingame sens/cpi should be synced like you said, but 1600cpi and 1 ingame sens makes me turn 360 in 24cm, and 400cpi with 4 ingame sens turns 360 in 27cm roughly (for 800cpi its somewhere in the middle of those).

Could the sensor height from mousepad affect it? I have some ultimat mouseskates, which are quite thick. I remember testing it prior adding them with same effect though.

It's fairly light compared to most "gaming" mice, lighter then the mx518 and DA. much, MUCH lighter then the G500.

Seems slightly retarded to put in a weight system on a mouse that already weights almost twice as much as others on the market. As if you'd need it to be heavier...
