it doesn't really look "big" for a hornet
a couple of years back i was on "vacation" with a friend and we were installing some energy-saving equipment (black glass tubes so the sun can heat up the water in them and some solar panels) on the roof of a youth hostel - turns out one of the chimneys was shut with bricks in the whole hostel and a colony of hornets built their nest in there.. there were literally thousands of hornets and none was smaller than about 4 times the size of wasps (about 5cm long, ~2 inches) - we didn't see the queen but i guess it was even larger than that. anyway, we had to call the fire department and they smoked it out
cigarette smoke didn't do anything to them but deodorant worked (probably because of the alcohol in there) :>
