Most al lthe demos are of guys that were first to have DSL or playing in Lans.that is not the best look for this game.
Early demos of Destrukt on 56k show how skill truly owned instead of modern day massive bandwidth or best setups,when it became more a point n click game or everyone thinking moving combos make yo ua great player ..lol.

Try watching a player of any DM game (cpm, wsw, qw, even q3), it's beautiful seeing him run around the map. Now, with UT, it's like STOP - JUMP - STOP - JUMP. Looks awful.

ut2k4 was basically a patch for ut2k3 except it had vehicles and they still charged you for it

Yeah they totally removed the ability to "boost dodge" which was one of the interesting elements that almost made 2k3 a unique game.

I still enjoyed 2k4 though despite it being completely dominated by hitscan (shock)

It's not just stop go lawl. I've played the UT series for 7 years now and i can tell you it's not like that. Go watch good players like scrmz, gitzzz, lauke, stryfe, astz, de`pain, combatcarl and see how fluidly they move around the map. Or watch any of the top players on the DPM demos (such as Brot or HoLyShIt) and tell me you can do the same thing as them. Not just dodging, but double dodge jumping while moving your mouse from a 90 degree angle sideways-to-forward (it's a technique that gives you more distance more efficiently). The two games are just different movement systems. Quake is a static fluid motion whereby UT is a dynamic motion based on a fightstyle that allows quick diagonal angles from your opponent. I don't care if you dislike how it looks or not but to say it doesn't have 'flow' is just ignorant.

It doesn't have the flow I (and many others :\) enjoy and are used to.
Not trying to bash here or anything, I for one have given UT (mostly 2k4) a try for many times, but it's kinda hard to watch and play it.

To be honest, I feel the same way about UT's movement and I know plenty of people, not necessarily quakers, who do too.

I'm not saying it's easy or bad, I'm just saying it lacks the flow from other DM games and it's one of the things that made me dislike UT in the first place. You are probably used to it, but there's a certain beauty in Quake's movement that even someone who has never played any DM games can appreciate, while UT's feels choppy.

I have nothing against Quake's movement. But this is a Quake site and naturally most everyone is going to be biased towards their beloved game. The problem is people who only appreciate one style of movement or gameplay.

The movement is terrible. I watched some of those top player matches and they all mostly camp b/c it takes like 5 fucking years to get from one side of the map to the other.

No wonder they started to include hoverpads/vehicles in the later games.

Wrong. It doesn't take long to get across a map that is scaled properly. There isn't really 'camping' in duel, no less than there is in Quake. You want camping, go play Counterstrike/CoD.

UT movement may have its benefits and perks. But its not flow.

agreed that q3's movement (as that of all id games, generally) has more "flow" meaning that quake's bunnyhopping follows a wave-like motion, while ut's dodging makes a rather choppy, sudden movement. not that this is necessary bad, they're simply different styles of movement and each of them can appear strange to a player used to the other style.

as for uploading oldschool ut demos on the tube: great. haven't seen a classic ut demo for the last few years, the old ones simply don't work any more with all version changes and packages needed since...

I'm pretty sure the quake style of movement makes more sense to new ppl, tho.

Have you seen fractal patterns flow? Have you seen football players flow down the field juking enemies left and right while still progressing? UT is no different with dynamic movement which allows for close up battles with dodges and circular strafing while juking opponents, then transverse double dodging to get around.

Please tell me how it sucks for traveling? Traveling as fast as say, Quake, is not important and in fact would imbalance the game. Second, apparent speed is relative to scaling of the environment to the characters and movement. I've yet to hear a single UT player complain of difficulty in traveling any of the major maps. Also, the translocator is one of the best innovations in a game ever, and is appropriate in CTF nothing else.

You are welcome to try travelling in a plane, car or whatever that constantly brakes and accelerates.

I think afterwards you will agree that a constant speed with less acceleration is preferable.

Cos it doesnt give u much distance and its stop/starty, ut2k3 movement was better IMO but compared to strafe jumping and bunny hopping(qw/cpm)

como'n dude, my first love was UT99 and if it would have been 8 years ago i would have joined up whit u and fought this quake site but the truths is that UT's movement isn't better, especially if u compare whit cpm.
UT99 movements its mostly about knowing where u dodge so u can cut corners and ledges and there for very limited.
UT2004 was better, i remember watching screams in amazement, but its was still about cutting corners/edges.

but i do agree that UT is more dynamic in close combat where quake is more about strafeing back and fourth.

i like the idea behind warsaw where they combined the movement of the both games but i don't like the slow q2 like rocket lancher and some of the other weapons (don't go apeshit warsow players, it was a while since i tried ws) so thats why i don't play it. but quake players doesn't seem to be willing to have their movement altered which is a shame since close combat fighting could be so much more in q3.

Well as far as watching goes then you are right. However I wouldnt dare to compare both methods of movement since Quake has transportation type one, while UT a combat type. For someone well versed in UT, watching or worse, participating in close combat in Quake is a pain. It feels like moving slowly in mud without being able to react properly.
It would be nice to have both fluid transportation movement, and responsive combat movement in one game, but Im yet to see such. Warsow was probably the closest.

Totally agreed on that one, even tho I'm pretty sure Quake weapon & Armor system, including the fact that you enter a battle while strafing\jumping quite often makes up for it in some way.

Well while armour system definitly suits Q3, I personaly rather prefer systems based on different protection levels, a bit like the one in CPM (overall I dont like that one tho).

What made UT99 so great is that you had top THINK before moving and not moving sometimes to LISTEN to sounds or trying to throw off your opponents predictions.

Most of quake was just aiming for the top of a jump pad/chute and constantly running for powerups,that is why they never stop.Tha tsame PU or no PU argument went on in UT99 as well,for me it is a no brainer ,there should NEVER be PU's ONLY skill and smarts.

UT99 was also best played on 56k,you had to EARN your kills that way,once everyone got DSL it became boring one shot kills or o/p mini/plasma and every other weapon.

You should increase the fov and enable weap models

that would make it easier to follow

I believe that if you recorded without weapon model there was no way to get it back on the demo, I could be mistaken though.

I thought the engine was pretty good, the only thing I was bothered about in UT99 was that the smoothness of the mouse seemed to be pretty off when compared to other games.

yeah it was quite good :) played vs bots and at a friends quite a lot, but after picking up q3 i realised they just got the gameplay mechanics all wrong and boring :P

As for the missing weapon model, the players at their time played without weapon, and so that's the way it was recorded into the demo. And as for the fov...well, you might be right, but there might be other players that think the fov is just great, and therefore it's hard to please everyone :]

And tom, i actually have other fooze demos, from tdms of the fooze movie itself (tdm 4on4 only), but i couldn't upload them as you might understand :P

i re-read my post and i didnt make myself clear, sorry lol. I meant i couldn't upload all the demos i came across with, orelse i couldn't use my pc for anything else but compressing and uploading.

I sure hope that these demos made some people feel the need to install ut again or even for the first time and play it a for a "while" more!

I play with 90, but those feel like 80 :P

i used to play with fov 90 for a while but that's not what i meant... for movies/spectacting i simply (and lots others) prefer a slightly higher fov like 100. it's so much easier to keep track of everything that's going on.

What's with the anger that SOME quakers feel towards ut?
It's so pointless, i can appreciate both games and point out good things and bad things on both, but i never felt this sort of disliking_rage towards any game.

UT is good, so is quake, stop the pointless and aparently eternal omnipresent duel between both gaming communities.

Those TDM games were pretty terrible, even in comparison to the cessfest that is vq3/ql TDM...

Ahhh, UT99. Great times. I actually enjoyed playing this more than Q3Arena at the time. I remember playing Morpheus for the first time in FFA and being blown away. And then I was blown away again with Face, Hallofgiants, etc. So many great maps, great atmosphere, great game.

No, sometimes you can notice a washed out brighter texture covering whole model, but thats just shield belt effect with nofractalanim set to true. The downside is that you dont see that texture right away, but with certain delay (you will notice a model with normal textures first), and also fire effect will become static which isnt good idea for those who likes to use them for hiding.

gitz vs lauke on turbine is still quite on level, but vs horny on codex made me laugh cause Im probably the last person who still plays that way (jumping with shaft all the time).

Any particular good demos to watch out for? While I could enjoy watching a few, I'll get bored rather fast, especially seeing the first one is just a practice game.

While it might have been a great game to watch live for excitement, it mostly felt like 2 guys running in circles. Was looking for something more spectacular that would make you shit your pants of awesomeness.

I've seen a handful of nice UT movies with quite impressive shots and such, but I guess most of those might be from less serious matches.

Well if you would ask me for exciting match of Q3 I would point out some of Jibo demos. What is running around in circles for you, for me is a high level action. Even considering that there is a lot more of lets say airrockets in Q3 in UT (cause its obviously easier to hit such in Q3) I guess it is more case of what one finds as exciting than of game.

Or maybe Im just getting old :P

On side note the first frag on turbine was actualy quite decent, but I guess you have to be an UT player to get that one, unless at least weapon switching animation would be visible.

My post was quite short and not very elaborate, I mentioned that the game would probably have been exciting live was more towards that it would've been much MORE exciting live.

I liked both the second and the first frag, I just wish there was more of that and less corner peaking.

Oh well, I'll watch some TDM demos instead.

good effort but watching part of the ctf game has reminded me why ut2k4 is now my secondary fps & played very little...bunch of combo spamming faggots

ut1 was the best ctf on any game ever. it was spammy as fuck but somehow it worked. real tiny maps like dreary stopped getting played in '01 or something.

ut1 was far from the best...small maps? did you watch the ctf vid he uploaded? spammy base != spammy map that huge open space is asking for sniper camping, especially with its fast reload time. then you have good old face ;). you might be able to claim it was the best in iCTF, even if the gun was far from instant (seems like 70% the speed of the ut2k4 gun). its maps werent as good as 2k4 either.

only things i like about ut99 instead of ut2k4 are:
- link secondary actually works as it should
- 6 rockets in 1!!
- shock balls were faster & smaller so combo whoring is less common
- shock primary was delayed/slower so hitscan was less encouraged

but ut2k4 has:
- better maps (the best from 99, other games & some new ideas including some of my favourite CTF maps -- not sure if theyre from other games though :x)
- shield gun -- which i think makes the ctf better (one of the few gametypes it does) as it encourages more flag caps with the added protection...especially considering the trans allows them to keep coming
- improved movement (you can do the same as ut99 if you wanna feel retro or you can use the dodge [wall] jump
- a better version face (!!!)
- vehiclez!

Basically I just want UT99 weapons in UT2k4 except with the UT2k4 shield gun brought in just for CTF gametypes

I heard many unusual things, but 2k4's ctf being better than ut's is certainly something new. As far as Im concerned its nowhere near ut's level, but Im also not the one to say that ut has the best ctf. The best ctf has Tribes series, and there is no discussion about it :P

One more thing, insta and shock in ut are completly of instant type, there is no delay between click, shot and hit, exactly like with sniper rifle. The probable delay you mention is just a graphic effect, an animation, nothing more :P

In 2005 I was into BF2 and some recreational Tribes 3 I think. Fallowing year I switched back to UT for Nations Cups, and did some Prey competitions. My contact with UT2k4 during those years was limited to ESWC 2005, but lauke vs falcon semifinal match was a great watch, especialy with guys at GGL booth.

Ive only played some UT2k4 CTF in 2004 I think, cant tell exactly how long but rather not too long as I didnt like the overall game much and dropped whole thing after getting Tribes 3 alpha :P

No, but it wouldn't be of any good i guess, he was skilled himself, the ini was irrelevant (sort of :P)

His graphic settings looked pretty standard including crosshair. The only unusual thing was that he used numpad to play, so he could move kayboard more to left and have more space for mouse (he practicaly stretched his arm when moving it to right).

It's still a fun and unique game for lan though, but never really played it online
