that's my Q6600 (G0) with stock cooling and stock or below Vcore (intel say the stock Vcore at stock speed of 2.4GHz is 1.25V - mine ran 3.0GHz at just 1.1V) staying under 70°C thanks to good case cooling (Chieftec Mesh series w/ 4x80mm, 1x120mm and 140mm in the PSU) - i was however unable to get it to run 3.3GHz or more properly because the 4th core stopped working - regardless of voltage
also Gigabyte P35 DS3R, 2x2GB OCZ DDR2-800 (they're running fine up to like 510MHz with a little more voltage - went up to what OCZ say is best) - the rest is

Hmm, so do I sell every two quad core pc's i have for about 600 quid (300 a piece) and invest it in singlei7's or just strap on a proper CPU coller,/Northbridge/Drive coollers, lapp the CPU and try and go for a stable 3.4 ghz across all pc's and get close to a stock i7.

Cheapest i7 I cna build atm is about 600 quid, which is what i would expect to get for every 2 quadcore pc's.

Have to think. Thing is, the X58 Motherboard with the i7 IS going to be compatable with their hexacore stuff next year, so that's the only reason I'm sort of leaving i5 out of the equation, even though it would strike a nice compromise between q6000 and i7.

But again, next year I'll want those cpu's and then will need the X58 which like i said I THINK will work.

Ya I actually sold my Q6600 rig to a good friend in need not too long ago before I built this new one for QuakeCon. I can tell you the difference in speed is definitely noticable for me all around. Right now not using the stock cooler but running on air with a Cogage True Spirit (was only 35$) and I'm idle at 28C. It's such an amazing cooler for the price. I could easily push the envelope if I overclocked especially since I got the D0 stepping. I'd imagine I could bench that test somewhere in the 30-45 sec range.

what do you want a new box for anyway? id say the q6600 is more than capable to handle everything you might want to throw at it right now well enough - if i were going for a new box id wait another 6 months or so until the prices on the i7s and especially boards start dropping

Cinebench is a clear example of why faster can be better. 'Capable of handling' and 'doing much more efficiently and saving a lot of time' are not the same. Doing video editing myself, the time saved has been fairly significant since upgrading my q6600. I'm quite sure an i7 could handle everything as well and then even farther beyond than hte q6600 so who cares if he wants to upgrade now or not.

i used to do a lot with c4d and 3dsmax etc and more cores was the way to go - i even overclocked my old pentium 4 3.00GHz to 3.6 to save some hours on a project that still took like 55 hours to render then :S
but from what i see the i7 is still damn expensive (considering you also need a new board and new ram - and the boards are especially expensive)
i'd just wait a little longer - if you really need like a 20-30% more processing power just buy a better cooler and overclock the cpu (since overclocking today is just as easy as 5 keystrokes in bios and everyone can do it - even balancing out is easy and you don't really have to be afraid of frying your cpu like back with athlon xps etc..)

also what i think this thread has shown is that windows 7 (i can only talk about the 64bit version here) is way more efficient handling multiple cores and that the OS should be the first thing to upgrade.

What cooling do you have on that and what's the load temp?

I've got my old cooler master hyper 48 directly from 2006 :D tho it's a bit modded, I've remplaced the stock 92 mm fan with a 120 with an adaptator (old one had his bearings getting old thus was making lots of noise)
Load temp is around 60°C I guess ... well it depends the appli I use. If it's CPU only, it stays around 50°C, but as my gfx card is producing lots of head, it gets harder too cool the cpu due to the ambient temperature raising.
Actually I think i'll get a better ram because the actual one is the limiting factor in the OC. :P

Nice, I should really overclock this a bit but I have no idea what I'm doing, it runs pretty well now, gets to like 45°C under load on a hot day (like when we had 30°C temps here recently) so it can definitely go higher.

any e8*00 can hit the 4ghz. and lots of them can do 4.5 :P

I absoultey REFUSE to rebuy software just for an new OS that at the end of the day runs programs.

I would like like 6-8 gig of ram though.

Will it flat out NOT WORK on windows 7 or are there just random incompatability probs. I have not looked into it because XP has served me well, but if I want proper i7 I need 6 gig of ram to go with it and an OS to utilise that.

Hmm, I might have to revise my strat then.
Its just I used a LOT of software and plugins if one don't work its a problem.

I'll test it out I guess. As an long term XP user is it really worth using. I hated my expereinces with vista it sort if turned me off any upgrades.

so far the only things i found that didn't work right away were some old drivers and really close-to-hardware programs like an old mouserate-changer to get 500/1000Hz (mostly because w7 64 only allows you to use signed drivers) until i found out about a little program to deactivate that service temporarily or if you want permanently aswell :p
otherwise everything i tried worked just fine
i also switched from XP (and since 2005 or so XP x64) directly to Win 7 - vista was just fucking slow, annoying and ugly

also, you should have 6 or 12gb ram if you are going for i7/ddr3 because of triple channel memory.

New i7 860 Benchmarks out. Looks like small improvements in a range of synthetic tests and about on par in 3DMark up against the i7 920. And apparently uses a lot less power for the same performance.

General Blurb continued.....

Cinbench seems to return slightly better scores in WIndows 7, so I'm inclined to belive it would do this in most threaded apps, but its not enough to make me upgrade given XP has worked so flawlessly for years and I just don't see any point in risking that. until I get some real benefits.

As for the i7 920, the D0 stepping versions are tempting, but I have decided to hold back and wiat for the 32 nm version which houses a GPU onboard, I'm hearing rumours these will clock higher, run cooller and be out by the end of the year.

But as a general rule of thumb I would say x1 i7 920 (with a safe air overclok) is equiv to about two Core 2 Quads at around the 3 Ghz mark.

The i7 bare essnetials come in at around £450 on top of this you still need a case/psu. You can build almost two q6600 rigs for this money.

Still not really worth the upgrade yet, minus electricity.

i5's are only a little cheaper than the i7, best invest in i7 as the motherboard should work for their new cpu's in 2010 rumoured to have 6 cores.

CONCLUSION:Intel need to stop fucking around with sockets and get a clue or stop being so greedy. AMD need to raise their game to stop intel being so greedy.
