You only need to read the forums to realise it's download worth. The admin is the only one who is worthy of deciding what should go in the game and there are no such members that can be considered contributers. The only things that is contributed is maps, and each release requires a new download, only to discover some shameful changes.

Many people are discussing and suggesting things that have already been well documented, tried and tested about 8 years ago. The version I first tried 0.7.1 wasnt too bad. But now the railgun fire sounds like a pop and the gauntlet sounds like a lawnmower (lightning gun is just as laughable).

They have an anti-bright skin policy and anything which adds competitive style. Perhaps not a bad thing but they have used many dark textures and don't consider that shaders/shadows make it even darker, the players often blend into the background. The railgun hum could send you to sleep and you can barely hear the location of other players holding such weapons.

The sound volumes are random (you barely hear rockets hitting walls). The textures are double the size (makes no sense since a texture should be suitable for tiling and bigger ones can be used where appropriate). This means that even the crosshairs and double dimensions and when they pulse they cover your entire view.

Many people have made suggestions, provided their own work, yet it is ignored or considered 'fishy' - because it was not an addition by the 'creator'. The 'creator' finds free content from free sources, downloads them and sticks them in the game. The irony is that if you created something yourself which sounded 'too good' it would more likely insult the game creator. If you were able to do something better and the creator insists on where the source is from, they dont even consider that people may have the ability to actually produce media and content themselves.

Most of the community members don't know any better, and many haven't had a glimpse of q3. They don't realise the potential and how much they are deprived from challenging gameplay. The development area is now more of a map making forum so they can push out new releases with only minor changes to the engine. This isnt a bad thing since you can still run q3 mods (yet maps will be missing textures).

It's definately worth trying out for a good laugh. The grenade launcher looks like a metal pipe that a table tennis ball would barely squeeze into. On the other hand, you may find yourself in disgust.

One positive note is that it is GPL so someone out there will put together all the good material that is available but will never be implemented in the game.. but that is unlikely because people who have knowledge and are critical (for the good of the game) are not welcome in the community. Most of them have left or banned.. or just dissapear (they will block your isp). If you are able to demonstrate improvements and compare it with the current game then you will only upset/insult the mananger.

One last thing that is worth noting. You can forget about a stable 125fps regardless of what hardware specs you have. The only thing you can do is try to improve it by playing it with minimal detail, but some maps and 'forced' eye candy will still be a problem on some maps.

oh ye, the hit sound is a bell.. with lots of noise through it which you can hear with a decent sound system. You hit someone with the railgun and it goes 'pop ding'. . memories of a fairground ride for under 13's. Sadly this has nothing to do with q3.. its all about gpl and FREE stuff available on the net.. lets change satuff to gpl and claim this to be all our own work without having any knowledge or passion about the game. Possibly more interesting is a fork of Open Arena with new texture packs - http://freeq3.com/

I've not tried it yet, but the textureset seems to be complete so any q3 custom maps should work. Probably still got low quality models / other artwork I expect though, but it is progressing much faster than OA ever has done.
