Windows XP SP2 (Partition was damaged when I installed SP3)

I don't use anti-virus.

I'm pretty safe when it comes to browsing/downloading, I don't download stupid game cracks in .exe format and such.

I've tried Mac, number of distros for Linux, and I'm happy with XP. If it's not broke, don't fix it.

If I were to use Anti-Virus and Spyware (Or if I have to remove viruses and spyware from someones PC) I use AVG and Avast for anti-virus (Do the pre-boot virus scanning for Avast, works very nice) and for Spyware I use Spybot S&D, and Ad-Aware.

It occured because of the fact that I had an AMD processor, or because it was pirated. All my friends and professors had the same issue when upgrading (the ones that had AMD processors)

So, I just reformatted, installed SP2. I refuse to touch SP3.

I upgraded to SP3 with my AMD and pirated XP yesterday without any problems at all.

from what I understand there's actually great improvments in performance with SP3, must be worth a try.

When SP3 was released, tons of AMD users had the same problem as me, but I don't know about ALL AMD users. I'm sure they fixed the problem and re-released it.

The problem wasnt with XP SP3, it was with the existing installation of Windows from certain vendors.

See here for full details, but for example HP were shipping AMD based PCs that had a registry key set to load the Intel power management functions which caused the SP3 installer to then install the intel dlls. That link has solutions to all of the issues, afaik.

That page lists a selection of issues, although the main one was the intelppm.sys driver issue. Perhaps you have the Asus mb that is mentioned?

You are aware that ad space is resold several times and on some occations virus makers etc. get a hold of ad space on legit sites? Even if you only surf on major well known sites you can still get attacked.

I didn't really know about that, I'll have to look into that a bit more. Seems odd to me (Not that I'm doubting you, it's just the first time I've heard of that)

I know MLB, GGL/Clanbase and several other sites have had that problem. It's been a while since the last time I've seen it happen though.

Anyone stupid enough to have shit like "automatically download and run ActiveX controls etc" on deserves what they get.

Gillz: SP3 has a stunningly-improved VMM - about a 10% speedup on memory throughput. Anyone still running SP2 is an idiot, period.
(Except Nicky, because we love her and she's too busy running the site to actually do things like update her PC. :P)

Well, after the fiasco I had with SP3, I'm not ready to do it. When I have to reformat (I do it every 6 months) I'll try SP3 before I install everything.

I'm not risking my partition getting fucked again, and having to reformat again, because of SP3.

It's not that I don't want to, it's that I don't want to risk what happened before.

XP is known to do that which is why you should make a slipstreamed disc with SP3. I always make a new slipstreamed disc any time a service pack comes out.

Maybe have 1 partition allocated for windows and another for games, programs and downloads.

It's personality really. I feel better to just whip clean and start fresh, then to uninstall all the shit and try to get it running like it was. I do basic shit like msconfig and removing programs, but still, just feels better.

you could at least clone the system partition after a fresh install, then clone it back when you feel like starting new

I actually DO create images of my fresh install with Norton Ghost, but it seems that every time I re-install, I have a new piece of hardware that restricts me from using that same image.

first os (slipstreamed with SP3)
then installing the newest chipset drivers
then gfx, sound- and netcard drivers
then the rest hardware

then windows update
firefox
antivirus and firewall
various programs (bitmeter, VLC, daemon tools, CC cleaner)
then filehippo to daily check outdated programs

and voila..

both XP systems upgraded from SP2 without any problems. Vista running without themes or Aero, and everything classic. on boot-up, I've got 13 running processes on the XP machines, with 14 services, and 109MB memory in use. on Vista, I currently have 23 running processes, 26 services, and 350-370MB in use (also disabled superfetching or whatever it's called).

I don't use anti-virus software or firewalls (apart from ipchains on Red Hat and iptables on Slackware for various things -- mostly NAT).
