easiest way to check this, join a server and get someone to idle, and trace around the model with your mouse - if his name gets displayed, you are on the hitbox.

Hitbox / model representation is _horrible_ in quake 3 and probably still as shitty in QL. It especially gets fucked up with all the weird jumping animations there is no exception to this, even keel is terrible.

The thing is most people have unconsciously adapted to it but it could be _way_ better representation wise, it would just look less flashy but as a competitive player i say fuck that :)

there is nothing wrong with having models because they actually give more directional information than just cubes, but they have to be done properly :)

If you do that, you get huge whine about how the hitboxes suck because everyones accuracy increases (see q4). This would be xerp mk 2.

It is of course the right thing to do though, and then maybe make them smaller / octagonal like in q4 ;)

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and call you clueless. Clientside hit detection would be fucking awful for Quake. CPMA has limited backward reconciliation and a certain upcoming Quake seems to have more and it is awful even in a small quantity.

bottom line is that games with CSHD are way more popular than without. ut3 tanked and cod4 sold like hotcakes for this reason alone. for all its other faults the netcode was the main thing that turned newbs off q4, ESR's personal nitpicks with the game are pretty much non-issue to a new player of quake.

everyone can stroke their own dicks as much they want about how quake is just too "hard" for players to get interested in but one of the major REASONS that quake is so hard to learn is that you DONT NEED TO LEARN TO LEAD ON PING in modern fps games.

the difference is that in the games you mentioned getting a kill is simply way easier than in quake. newbs don't look for an improved rail percentage, they want frags and only frags.

cs is popular because "tactical shooters", or whatever you want to call a game with real guns and teambased roundplay, is more appealing to people. (as unoriginal the concept is)


Halo doesn't fit in the category but it plays kind like one and the pace is actually slower than cs for the most part.

To make a quake game popular would require advertising its high speed action and having a lot of carnage arena servers up.

if you want the community to remain stagnant then leave the netcode as it is. the new blood will NOT play a game without CSHD, they won't know exactly what is that's bugging them about the netcode but they can tell

it makes more sense to eliminate hitscan and having cshd projectiles, it transforms the skill of leading on your ping into something consistent based on distance

the bigger question is - why DON'T you want the game to behave as much like lan as possible? i thank you very much for pointing out the ONE flaw in cshd completely ignoring that it fixes pretty much everything else wrong with quake netcode in one fell swoop

quake is not playable at all at pings over 100, even 50 is pushing it, most modern fps games are playable even up to 150 ping (not competitive, but playable)

afaik with CSHD the dodging movement would arrive with a delay, until then client would still predict the player to move in the same direction and award the hit, hence dodging gets even harder and accuracies rise. (if I'm wrong someone with code knowledge please correct me :) )
