How would quake 4 be better? q4 has one good team, rage, who play against a bunch of newbie clans since that is what is left of q4ctf. Qlive on the other hand had people like viju and z4 playing, and they are most definitely not newbies.

q4 ctf got the kind of maps allowing you to score often (e.g. 10-10 score is common) ; imo it's way more fun and entertaining, and you don't end up 0-0 with endless OTs. and you can take more risks aka having fun since it's just a cap, not the cap, etc
also you got more freedom of movement than in vq3 (slides allowing you to turn, and to control rampjumping), counts a lot in ctf since part of the gameplay is a race
ql ctf maps are pretty bad so far (although I havn't taken a look at them since a few weeks now, maybe that's better now with some tweaking)

100% on with what you said. QL CTF is so slow, and tedius, our team wound up in overtime twice against z4's clan, and they were both very low scoring. As far as good Quake 4 teams, there are plenty of them out there. Hell our team has beaten rage a couple of times, and thats the one team your talking about (crossiant), but for ESR's that don't already know crossaint is banned from all the Q4 leagues and channels, so it doesn't suprise me he comes back with negative attitudes. Just shows hes still got a sore asshole.

Sorry dradik but neither your team nor rage can stack up to teams with players like zero4, clock, viju, knoss, fox etc. in terms of talent. Aside from RAGE there really are no good q4CTF teams in NA, and even then, rage is likely worse now than they were when I played. Perhaps there are clans that are good relative to the current state of the game, but trust me the current state of the game is pretty abysmal.

For ESR users wanting more erroneous information in regards to the discussion: I played in 4 q4ctf tournaments and won 3 of them. Dradik hasn't won a single tourney despite the majority of good players leaving the community long ago. Of course, dradik believes he has a better idea about skill in q4ctf...odd eh.

What I said was 'negative' but what you said wasn't?..

I played q4ctf for years, so I agree with most of what you are saying in terms of q4ctf gameplay being faster and more entertaining. However, Quake4 maps do not really allow that many more caps than conventional q3ctf maps (cp9 for example). If you played the finals on a map such as speedtrap you'd still get the same boring scores and type of game.

Obviously, the maps chosen for qlive were bad and did not allow for anything of interest to watch (the only 'played' remake of q3 was ctf2, and that has always been low scoring in q3). However, I'd rather watch the top players in the world play a boring map than watch relative newbies play some q4ctf. If q4CTF instead of Qlivectf was an event at qcon I doubt the good euro ctf teams would make the trip and that would leave the sad NA q4ctf scene to play the tournament.

Basically qlive ctf was the lesser of two evils.

oh ofc q4 ctf at qcon would have been a disaster and it was cool to see the "new" game in ctf too (although I'm not sure if it's good publicity to show mostly boring games on bad maps)
I just wanted to point out that even with all the flaws q4 had/has, it yet shows a good direction for ctf (but ofc not all q4 ctf maps are good), and I hope ql will take this path somehow at some point
I mean last time I've played ql CTFs it ended each time as draw game 0-0 or so, really boring and annoying games. basically it's just a mapping matter, so I hope ql's dev team is doing something ; changing the items layout or slighty modifying construction in order to allow easier caps and more mid action (meaning trying to intercept efc in mid), isn't difficult

I think in general qlive has learned from q4 with things such as reduced railgun damage and more powerful rockets. I think you and I both would like to see faster movement speed and more creative movement in qlive since it worked so well in q4ctf. However, the increased movement speed in q4 was frowned upon a lot in duel mode, so I doubt qlive will ever be as fast as q4CTF.

Wait are you saying a team called "inninitforthe$" would not have played Q4CTF instead of QLCTF if it had been a tourney with the same price money and they had been attending Quakecon for the QL duel anyway?

They could have, but then again they could have grabbed another couple and played ET:QW. They could have played in the guitar hero contests, they could have played some tug of war in the back alley as well..

Is it likely that they would have? Not really. A lot of NA q3ctf players (including ones on your mentioned team) did not and continue not to enjoy q4ctf, so the chances of them making a pu team to compete in a q4ctf tourney isn't terribly high.

Yup, I believe fox would be game to play if it was q4ctf as well. I specifically mentioned the NA players since I know first-hand how many of the q3ctf players tried q4ctf, were terrible at it and complained that the game was no good and then never wanted to play it again...did someone say q3 players are stubborn? bah

The only reason Q4 wasn't selected is because sponsors only wanted to sponsor a new game. Period, until last minute it was Q4 and because people would of been pissed with no prize money QLCTF was selected.I know that for a fact fyi.

Q4CTF has been too dead for too long for anyone to seriously consider it for qcon. There are always supposed certainties or high probabilities that q4ctf will be chosen (has been that way for 3 years in a row now) but they stem from one or two people who think they have a greater say than they really do.

The game technology isn't new but the marketing is... and like I said I knew that for Q4 was going to be chosen for a fact, stop pretending to know anything because you just make yourself out to be a big time whiney bitch.

the videos of the ctf finals were not added until the 15th, hence the low number of downloads for them in comparison to all of the other videos also...

the coverage has been late and fragmented at best.

the problem with these videos is they are constantly (and randomly at that!) changing pov, and since the commentators are totally clueless they can't chose properly what player to follow.

result: the matches are unwatchable. flags get captured without us even getting a glimpse of the action. this sucks
