Well you do some research on every suicide bomber over the last 10 years. When you realise 99.9% of them are from a certain neck of the woods with a certain skin tone/faith then it's kinda hard not to predict the next bomber will too be of a set colour or faith.

This 42 day law and id cards are all to do with national security, and deep down it's immigrants or those who have shallow roots in the country who are at the greatest risk of damaging it, but the GVT can't just admit that, so they have to go through really touh procedures to find out information to protect its lvelihood.

Whether or not that is a small % does matter, what matters is it is true. The next suicde bomber will not be white and will not be a christian. If that is not reason to target a certain demographic more than another then i don't know what is.

The 42 holding day rule for potential terror suspects is not even going to be a reality for most British people and an even lesser one if you're white because the problem is primarily linked to non white people. i dont know why he resigned, other than for publicity. The Lords will more than likely reject the 42 days and nothing will come of 'affront to our civil liberties'.

If anything it has given lots of publicity to the whole eroding civil liberties issue that will probably end up stemming the tide for a little while.

Ironic how an attack on liberty ends up strengthening whatever is left of it.

this is more of a press statement than a speech and so i don't think it's particularly noteworthy, but you should watch or read wednesday's session in the lower house. some of the speeches given there by MPs, such as dianne abbot (lab, hackney) against the bill are exceptional.

re: davis' actions, it's formidable that he's taking a stand against the government and i commend him for it. afaik he's standing on the issue of the bill alone (i.e. not with regards to party politics, he says he doesn't want another crewe & nantwich) but won't this byelection end up being fought precicely along party lines? is it fair on the constituency in question (whose name i already forget) to be 'used' in this way? there's already the question of whether labour will field a candidate or not, in which case it would appear to be farcical.

I watched Abbot's speech which was very good, but not as effective a symbol, which is what this Davis speech is as he himself has some very dodgy views on things like the death penalty.

As to the bye-election I have no idea how it will turn out, if Labour will think they can get away with not putting up a candidate or not. I have a horrible feeling it will turn into a damp squib when we need a clear message to come though - stop destroying the thing you're supposed to be protecting from terrorists in the first place. Fortunately I think the tide is turning against politicians getting away with reducing rights and freedoms with the supreme court's judgement against Bush.
