Most Korean MMO games have been using this model for quite some time. They make a profit without being ad-oriented, though. Instead, they offer things like "DOUBLE EXP FOR A WEEK" and charge you money for it. You can play the game normally just fine, but money will make it easier/faster and get you cool shit.
